To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL BLANARIK, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at South Nor-walk, in the county of Fair field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairdirctuated Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in chair actuated blowers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an air blast mechanism adaptable for a rocking chair whereby the usual movements of the chair produces a draft of air directly upon the occupant thereof.
A. further object of the device is the pro vision of a rocking chair having a motor driven by the oscillations of the chair whereby a fan is manipulated for producing the draft of air communicating with some desirable point upon the chair. I
In carrying out these objects it is designed to provide a rocking chair of the usual form resiliently maintained in itsnormal rest position upon a base provided therefor, a motor driven rotary fan being carried by the chair bottom and having an air outlet tube, and the motor of the said fan being revoluble by means of pivoted operating levers having pawl and ratchet engagement withthe shaft of the. fan.
lll ith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.

A ratchet wheel 2-0 is keyed upon the shaft 17 substantially centrally thereof and relatively large and small operating gears 21 and are jouri'laled upon the shaft 17 for forcibly revolving the said ratchet 20, the said gears being arranged upon opposite sides of the ratchet 20 and in engagement therewith, the larger gear 21 being arranged between the ratchet 20 and the casing 18 while the smaller gear 22 is positioned outwardly of the ratchet 20 and retained upon the shaft 17 by means of a washer 23 and a removable cotter 241.
The gear 21 is provided with a pawl 25 adapted for operatively engaging the ratchet teeth 26 of the ratchet 20 for turning the shaft 17 when the gear 21 is turned in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 of the drawings, while upon a reverse movement of the gear 21, the pawl 25 freely rides over the ratchet 20. The small gear is provided with an extension 27 having a spring pressed pawl 28 in engagement with the ratchet teeth 26 and arranged diametrically opposite to the pawl 25 so as to engage the teeth 26 and turn the ratchet 20 whenever the gear 22 is revolved in the direction of the said arrow or in, the same operative direction as heretofore described with respect to the gear 21.
A forward operating lever 25) is provided for the gear 21 having a toothed lower surface 30 engaging the teeth 31 of the said gear 21 and forcibly retained in mesh therewith by means of a helical spring 32 connecting the lever 29 with the adjacent base member 15, the said lever 29 being pivotally connected to the said base member by means of a stub axle 33 positioned substantially in the plane of the adjacent forward leg 34 of the chair 10. A rear lever 35 is pivoted to a stub axle 36 carried by one of the base members 15 on the outer side thereof and rearwardly of the plane of the roar legs 37 of the chair. The lever 35 is provided with a toothed surface 38 upon its upper side retained in constant mesh with the small gear 22 by means of an expansion spring 39 connecting the lever with the adjacent base member 15.
An outlet or discharge tube e0 extends from the fan casing 18 and is attached by means of a loop 41 with the adjacent chair arm 12 for directing the air blast from the fan toward the face of the occupant of the chair 10, the free end of the tube 10 preferably having a flattened nozzle 42.
From this detailed description of the complete device, the operation thereof will be apparent, it being understood that the normal position of the elements when at rest is that illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, positioning springs 43 being preferably arranged connecting the opposite ends of the chair rockers 13 with the base members 15. During the rocking movement of the chair 10 as influenced by the occupant thereof, the downward. movement of the forward por= tion of the chair causes the gear 21 to revolve in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 by reason of the interengagement of the longitudinally immovable lever 29 and whereby through the agency of the pawl 25 and ratchet 20 a corresponding revolving of the shaft 17 is accomplished and during which time the riding of the gear 22 up wardly upon the lever 35 allows its pawl 28 to ride freely over the ratchet 20. Upon the return movement of the chair the rear portion thereof descends, thus forcing the gear 22 downwardly upon the longitudinally immovable lever 35 which results in turning the gear 22 in the said operative direction and by means of its pawl 28 communicating such air blast from the usual rocking impulses imparted to the chair and without the employment of additional effort ordinarily required in the farming operation.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is. what is believed to be the preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit'and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim as new is V A device of the class described comprising base members, a rocking chair operatively positioned upon the said members, a fan casing suspendin'gly secured to the bottom of the said chair at one side. thereof, an outwardly projecting power shaft journaled in the said case, a fan secured to the said shaft within the said case, a. ratchet wheel. keyed to the said shaft substantially centrally of the projecting portion thereof, a large gear journalcd upon thesa id shaft between the said casing and ratchet, a pawl upon the said gear in mesh with the teeth of the said ratchet, an operating lever pivoted at its lower end to the forward portion of the adjacent base member and having a toothed lower side engaging the teeth of the said gear and a compression spring connecting the said lever and the adjacent base member, a small gear journaled upon the said shaft outwardly of the said ratchet, 'a spring pressed pawl carried by the said small gear engaging the teeth'of the said ratchet at a point substantially diametrically opposite from the point of engagement of the said rear gear pawl therewith, a rear operating lever pivoted to the adj aeent base member at the rear portionthereof and having an upper toothed edge in mesh with the lower portion of the said small gear and an expansion spring positioned between the said rear lever and the adjacent base member.
