Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb, 6, lgil't.
Original application filed February 16, 1915, Serial No. 8,485. Divided and this application filed July 23,
. 1915. Serial No.41,e88.
16, 1915, and has for its object to providev improved sash cord attaching and detaching means whereby a window sash can be quickly put in place and removed into a room with equal facility for cleaning, re-' pair, etc.
My invention consists in certain particular features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of m improvements, as applied.
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the meeting rail of a lower sash and a section through the sash cord.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a window frame and sash cord guide.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the same.
Fig. 5 is an underview of the thimble and cord latch, when occupying the position shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a. diagrammatic view, showing complete frame and with my improvements applied.
In carrying out my invention, the sash cords M which pass over the guide pulleys L mounted on top the frame A at each corner and journaled within the housing or shields 12, are provided at one end with a tubular metal ferrule or sleeve M and riveted thereto; the other end of the cord is to be attached to a conical weight N which has a tapering bore larger at the lower end than at the upper end so that the ferrule M which is cylindrical will be wedged tightly in the tapering bore when tension is put on the cord or it is pulled upwardly; by making the weight conical as shown, it will have greater specific gravity at its lower end and assume a vertical position at all times, and hence maintain the cord in a vertlcal position so that it cannot buckle or jam; the end of the cord which is to be attached to the sash is provided with a tubular sleeve M which is secured to the cord by a pin M which projects across the lower end of the sleeve and beyond the same at each side. To attach the cord to the sashes I provide the bracket 0 secured to the sashes at each upper corner upon the top of the top rail thereof. This bracket is provided with substantially l. shaped upstanding ears 0 provided with undercuts 0 into which are shoved the projecting ends M of the pin securing the sleeve M to the cord M.
To allow the ends M to be shoved into place in the bracket 0, I provide a plate spring keeper fastened at one end to the base of bracket O, the free end being notched to provide fingers 0 which will engage the sleeve M when it has been forced between the ears 0 and into the undercuts To release the cord the spring keeper is forced downwardly when the sleeve with the projecting pins M can be slid out of the bracket; this end of the cord is then allowed to run upwardly until the upper end of the sleeve M extends into a circular recess A in the upper cross member of the frame and this recess is provided with a thimble A of metal or other suitable material to prevent the cord from chafing and wearing the wood,
and to form a stop for the pins M at lower end of sleeve M the pin which secures the sleeve to the cord passes across the lower open end of the sleeve and to again attach the cord to the sashes, a rod having a hook is used thus; the hook is caught over the cross pin and the sleeve drawn downwardly until it can be reached by hand when it is again shoved into place on the bracket 0, the spring keeper holding it in place and preventing accidental displacement. The shield or housing prevents the sash cords from leaving the pulleys L and becoming jammed in the frame as frequently occurs in the ordinary sash frame and cord equipments.
I claim 1. In a window comprising a frame, a sliding sash and cord guiding means at the top of the frame, said means including a vertical opening to guide the cord and enlarged at its lower end, a lining thimble in said enlargement, a sash cord and a fastener therefor consisting of a tubular sleeve secured to one end of said cord, lateral projections at the lower end of the sleeve, the sash carrying a spring catch secured to the upper rail thereofadapted to be engaged by said lateral projections on the sleeve to detachably couple the sash and cord.
2. In a window including a slidable sash and a frame provided with a cord guide at its upper corner, a s'ash cord running through the top of the frame at the upper corner, a metal sleeve rigidly secured at theopposite end of the sash cord and provided with lateral projections adjacent its lower end, and a latch secured to the upper face of the top rail of the sash and compris- 8. A sash cord fastener for-securing a sash cord to the top rail of a sash, consisting in combination of a tubular sleeve secured to oneend offthe cord,-said sleeve having lateral projections adjacent its lower ends anda latch member consisting of spaced apart undercut ears to receive the said projections, and means for preventing removal of theprojections from theundercut ears.
