Description

E. J. BROOKS. Sash Lock and Lift.
"No. 225,558. Patented Mar. I6, 1380.
MPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMEE WASHINGTON. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
EDWARD J. BROOKS, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO E. J. BROOKS & OO.
SASH LOCK AND LIFT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,558, dated March 16, 1880. Application filed January 9, 1880.
This invention relates to looks and lifts for.
vertically-sliding car-windows, and more particularly to those which are combined so that the lifting act, without variation, will first unlock and then raise the window.
The objects of my invention are, first, to combine a lift with a lock at the side of a carwindow in the most direct manner, and so that the lift shall project conveniently outward from the face of the window, with a vertical shank, which sustains the strain lengthwise and obviates slotting the case; secondly. to combine the same by means more simple and cheap than the ordinary bell crank; and, thirdly, to so combine and inclose the same as to provide for making and attaching the combined articles in the most economical manner; and my said invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts, whereby I accomplish said objects, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a perspective view of a combination car-window lock and lift illustrating this invention. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4: is another back view, illustrating the movements of the parts.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A lifter, A, of ample size, is constructed with a vertical shank, s, which occupies a pair of guides, and is adapted to slide freely up and down. A horizontal locking-bolt, B, is
similarly guided and adapted to slide in and out of the case 0, of which said guides of both the bolt and thelifter form parts; and said bolt and litter are so connected that the elevation of the latter relatively to the case retracts the former, after which the continued lifting pressure acts through the lifter A and case O to raise the unlocked window, as illustrated by arrows l 2 in Figs. 2' and 4:.
A single spring, s, projects both the bolt and the lifter when the hand is withdrawn, causing the bolt B to engage with a detenthole in the window-jamb to lock the window.
A thumb-projection, t, on the face of the case O, immediately above the finger-piece of the lifter A, provides for lowering the window, the grasp of' both serving to keep the bolt retracted, while any downward pressure which may be required is applied by means of the thumb.
In lieu of the more obvious bell crank lever, or any other device which may be employed as a substitute for transmitting motion from the lifter shank to the locking-bolt, as aforesaid, I employ a simple inclined link, I, attached within open slots in the inner ends of said parts by transverse pintles 10 10 the inner end of the bolt being so located as to keep the link inclined, and consequently operative. The bolt is instantly and forcibly retracted by the lifter through this very simple connection, and the cost of providing a fulcrum, riveting the pintles, and slotting the pintlc-holes is savedas compared with the use of a bell-crank.
The link lis curved to avoid the inner guide I of the bolt.
Used in connection with the said guide and link, the said lifter-shank and locking-bolt are adapted to be made cylindrical throughout, and are accommodated by drilled guide-orifices.
The springs, in the form of a spiral coil, surrounds the bolt B between its inner guide and a pin, 1). l
The case O, with the said guides and attaching-lugs Z is a single fiat casting with a recessed back, which is closed by the face of the window sash, the article being attached to the latter by. screws passing through said lugs 1 without recessing the sash.
The article is thus adapted to be cheaply manufactured.
The lock and lift may be made of any prethe horizontal locking-bolt B, with its pin 1) I0 ferred external shape and finish, and either and spring 8, and the guides and abutments one or two may be used on each window. for said parts formed by the case 0, as herein The following is what I claim as new and of specified, for the purposes set forth. 5 my own invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, namely: EDWARD BROOKS The combination of the outwardly-project- Witnesses: ing lifter A, with its vertical shank s, the in- HENRY N.
