A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a door latch lock wherein a single spring serves both to bias the lock bolt to its operative projected position and to assure maintenance of the motiontransmitting connection between the actuator of the device and the lock bolt.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, this invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in theprecise embodi ment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate one complete example cf the physical embodiment of the inventioncohstructed in accordance with the best mode so 1 far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which: I
V Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a'portion of a compartment, the door of which is provided with the lock device of this invention, and. illustrating the lock bolt in its operative "projected keeper engaging position;
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1, but illustrating the manner in which" depression of the lock cylinder into the casing bore retracts the lock bolt to its inoperative position;
' Figure 3 is a bottom view of the lock device illustrated in Figure'l;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the lock device of this invention showingthe lock cylinder separated fromthe lock casing; and
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the lockclevice to illustrate the manner in which the lock cylinder is mounted within the casing bore. Referring now more particularly to the acoompanying drawings in which'like numerals indicate like parts throughoutth'e several views, the numeral 5 de'signates'the'do'or 'of a glove compartment only the upper wall 6 of which is shown. Ad acent to the door opening'at the front of the compartment the upper wall 6 is provided with a keeper or striker plate 1 extending down into the compartment with its rear surface 8 disposed substantially parallel to the'plane of the door with the door in its closed-position as illustrated.
A latch bolt 9 carried by the lock device of this invention, indicated" generallyby the numeral 10', has a keeper engaging portion ll engageable be hind the keeper and against the surface 8 thereof to secure thecompartment door 5 closed.
The lock device ID mountson'the rear of the door adjacent tc'its'freeed'g'e'opposite its hinge and for this purpose is provided with opposite laterally'extending cars 12 carried'by the lock casing I3 at the front thereof; The ears abut against the back of the door and suitable bolts passing through the ears and door hold the lock device assembled onthe door in line with an aperture I4 in the door.
A lock cylinder I5 is sl' idable axially and rotatable within a bore It in the casing opening to the opposite ends thereof projects forwardly through the aperture M with the front end portion of the cylinder providing a push button actuatorlE'. It will beunderstood.:that:thelock cylinder I5 4 is provided with the customary key operable tumblers as indicated at H inFigure 5 which permit notation of the cylinder to locked and unlocked positions when a suitable key it is inserted into the keyway of the cylinder; and that the cylinder is secured against motion relative to the casing upon rotation of the cylinder to its locked position substantially 90 fromlts position illustrated in Figure 5. When the'key is withdrawn in the locked position of the cylinder the tumblers project into opposite tumbler retaining grooves 20 in the casing communicating with the bore |6 thereof (only one of said grooves being shown inFigure 4). r
' The-latch bolt 9 has a substantially U shape with its opposite legs 22 substantially straddling the rearpor-tionof the casing. The closed end of the U -shaped bolt portion provides the keeper engaging bit II, and it is to be noted that the legs of the bolt lie in a plane substantially normal to'the casing bore, and that; the keeper engaging surface of the bit ll lies nearly parallel to said plane of the legs; The bolt is suspended from the casing by means of parallelogram linkage, indicated generally by the numeral 23, which restrains the bolt to substantially'translating or straight line motion in a path parallel to the plane of the door and the legs 22 or normal to the casing bore.
As best shown in Figure 4, the linkage comprises two pairs of links 24 and 25 disposed alongside the top and bottom of the casing respectively. The link 24 has parallel opposite side arms 2% the forward extremities of which embrace bearing lugs 21 extending forwardly from the front of the. casing near the top thereof to project slightly through the opening M in the door, and a hinge pin 28 passing through aligned apertures in the forward extremities of the arms 26 and the lugs 2'! provide for pivotally mounting the link for swinging motion on an axis normal to the lock cylinder axis. and crosswise of the legs 22 of the lock bolt. 1
The side arms 26 of the link are connected by a'strap 29 cooperating with the hinge pin 28 and the lugs 21 to rigidly hold the side arms in parallel relationship and against lateral deflection. The rear extremities of the arms 26 are individually pivotally connected with the legs of the lock bolt as at 30 adjacent to the junction of the legs with the keeper engaging portion H of the bolt.
The lower link comprises a substantially channel shaped plate the web 31. of'which acts as-a cover for the bottom of the lock device. Extending perpendicularlyup from opposite sides of the web are oppositeflaiiges=32 which are pivotally connected with the lower extremities of the legs 22 of the lock bolt as at 33; I r The forward portion of the link 25 is also pivotally connected :to the front end of the casing and forthis purpose has apertures in the forward extremitiesof its flanges aligning with similar apertures provided in :spaced bearing lugs 34 formedon 'thefrontof the casing and projecting forwardly into the hole l4 in the door so that a hinge pin 35 p'a'ssing through these aligned apertures in the flanges and lugsmounts the link 25' for pivotal motion-on an axis parallel to the axis of the hinge pin 28-but' at the opposite side of the casing therefrom.
Since the link 24 and25 are parallel an dthe center to center distances'between the pivots 3i] and 2B and between the pivots 33 and 35 are substaritia'lly' the same', it will be understood that the a lock 'boltis' thli's mountedfor-substantially slide the cylinder axially into the casing bore is translated into retractive motion of the lock bolt to its inoperative position.
2. In a lock device of the character described: a casing having a bore; an actuator slidable longitudinally in the bore with an end portion thereof projecting from the front of the casing to provide a depressible push button for the actuator; a lock bolt adjacent to the rear of the easing having a keeper engaging bit; parallelogram linkage pivotally connected with the casing ad- J'acent to its front end and with the'lock bolt so as to mount the bolt from the casing for substantially straight line motion of the bolt in a path transversely of sliding motion of the actuator; spring means reacting between the bolt and the casing for yieldingly maintaining the bolt in an operative position with its bit projected to a keeper engaging position: and a motion transmitting connection between the actuator and the lock bolt including an abutment on the actuator, and a lever arm on said linkage lying in the path of said abutment so that depression of the actuator into the casing boreacts through said lever and linkage to retract the lock bolt;

In a lock device of the character described: a casing having a bore; a substantially U-shaped lock bolt having its legs straddling the rear portion of the casing; a keeper engaging surface on the closed end portion of the bolt lying substantially parallel to the common plane of the legs of the bolt; an actuator for the bolt slidable longitudinally in the casing bore; substantially parallel links pivotally connected to the casing adjacent to the front end thereof and to said legs of the lock bolt and mounting the bolt for substantially translating motion with its legs travelling in a path transversely of longitudinal motion of the actuator; spring means reacting between the casing and the lock bolt for biasing the lock bolt to an operative projected positionin which said keeper engaging surface thereof engages behind a keeper; and a motion transmitting connection between the lock bolt and the actuator bywhioh depression of the actuator into the casing bore is translated into retractive motion of the lock bolt to an inoperative position in which its keeper engaging surface is disengaged from the keeper.
4. In a lock device of the character described: a casing having a bore opening to its opposite ends; an actuator slidable'axially in said bore and having a portion projecting from the front of the casing providing a push button for the actu ator; cooperating abutments on the casing and actuator for limiting axial motion of the actuator forwardly out of the casing bore but permitting depression of the actuator rearwardly into the bore so that the rear end of the actuator projects from the rear end of the casing; a substantially U-shaped lock bolt at the rear of the easing having its legs straddling a, rear portion thereof and spaced sufficiently far apart as to permit projection of the rear end of the actuator therethrough in the depressed position of the actuator; pivoted links connected between the lock bolt and the casing and supporting the lock belt for substantially translating motion in the plane of the legs of the bolt and-substantially transversely of the axis of the casing bore; spring means yieldingly biasing the lock bolt to an operative projected position; and a motion transmitting connection between the lock bolt and the actuator by which depression of the actuator rearwardly into the casing bore is translated into retraction motion of the lock bolt to an inopera tive position.
5. In a lock device of the character described: a casing having a bore; a key operated lock cylinder rotatable in the bore between locked and unlocked positions and slidable axially in the bore in its unlocked position of rotation, the front of the lock cylinder projecting from the front of the casing to provide a push button actuator for sliding the cylinder axially in its bore; a substantially U-shaped lock bolt having its legs lying in a plane substantially normal to the axis of the casing bore and disposed at opposite sides of the casin at the rear thereof, the end portion of the bolt joining the legs being offset with respect thereto so as to lie at one side of the plane of the legs and providing a keeper engaging bit; two pairs of links, each pair having spaced connected side arms pivotally connected at one end thereof with the legs of the lock bolt and at their opposite ends with the lock casing adjacent to the front of the casing so as to provide parallelogram linkage at opposite sides of the casing with said links supporting the lock bolt from the casin for substantially translating motion in the plane of its legs, said bolt being movable from an operative projected position in which said bit thereof is engageable with a keeper to an inoperative retracted position in which its bit is disengaged from the keeper; a motion transmitting connection between the lock cylinder and one of said pairs of links by which depression of the push button actuator to slide the lock cylinder axially into the casing bore is translated into retractive motion of the lock bolt to its inoperative position; and common means for yieldingly biasing the lock bolt to its operative projected position and for yieldingly holding the lock cylinder with its push button actuator projecting from the front of the casing.
6. In a lock device of the character described: a casing having a bore opening to one end thereof; an actuator depressible axially into said bore; a substantially U-shaped lock bolt having its legs embracing the rear portion of the casing and lying in a plane substantially normal to the axis of the casing bore, the closed end of the bolt defining a keeper engaging bit; a link pivotally connected between the legs of the lock bolt and the casing at the front end portion thereof so that the link extends longitudinally of the casing; means carried by the casing and cooperating with the lock bolt and said link to restrain the bolt to substantially straight line motion in a direction parallel to the plane of its legs upon motion of said link about its pivotal connection with the casing; a spring yieldingly biasing the lock bolt to an operative projected position in which its bit is engageable with a keeper; and a motion transmitting connection between the lock bolt and the actuator operable upon depression of the actuator into the casing bore to move the lock bolt to an inoperative retracted position in which its bit is disengaged from said keeper.
7. In a lock device of the type having a casing bored to slidably receive an actuator depressible into the casing bore to carry a lock bolt movably supported by the casing from an operative projected position to an inoperative retracted position with respect to a keeper with which the bolt is engageable; a shoulder on the side of the actuator; a lever pivotally carried by the casing and having a portion disposed alongside the actuator and in line with said shoulder so as to be engaged and pivoted thereby during depression of 9 the actuator into the casing bore; a connection between said lever and the lock bolt by which depression of the actuator into the casing bore is translated into retractive motion of the lock bolt;
and a combination torsion and. compression spring for biasing the lock bolt to its operative projected position and for yieldingly holding said portion of the lever against the side of the actuator so as to insure engagement of said shoulder therewith, said spring also acting on the actuator through said lever to yieldingly resist depression of the actuator into the casing bore.
8. In a lock device of the type having .a casing bored to slidably receive an actuator depressible into the casing bore to carry a lock bolt movably supported by the casing from an operative projected position to an inoperative retracted position with respect to a keeper with which the bolt is engageable: bolt propelling means pivotally mounted on the casing and connected with the bolt so as to propel the same to and from an operative projected position upon pivotal motion thereof about its connection with the casing; interengaging parts on the side of the actuator and said bolt propelling means operable upon depression of the actuator into the casing bore for eifecting retraction of the lock bolt to its inoperative position; means for biasing the lock bolt to an operative projected position through said bolt propelling means; and means fOr yieldingly maintaining said interengaging parts in cooperative relationship so as to insure bolt retractive motion upon depression of the actuator into the casing bore.
9. In a lock device of the character described: a lock body adapted to be mounted in a stationary position; a lock cylinder movably carried by the lock body and having key operated tumblers for controlling the motion of the cylinder; an elongated lock bolt having its body offset to pass beside the cylinder and having a keeper engaging bit at one extremity thereof engageable with a keeper in a projected position of the bolt; parallel links connected between the lock bolt and the lock body and constraining the bolt to endwise substantially straight line motion transversely of the axis of the cylinder; and a motion transmitting connection between the cylinder and the bolt operative to retract the bolt from its projected keeper engaging position by movement of the cylinder.
10. In a lock device of the character described: a lock body adapted to be stationarily mounted on the rear of a door; a lock cylinder movably mounted on the lock body and having key operable tumblers to control the motion of the cylinder; an elongated lock bolt having a keeper engaging bit at one end thereof in the axial region of the tumblers, said lock bolt being offset to pass beside the cylinder; parallel links spaced from the cylinder and extending rearwardly away from the door in the direction of the cylinder axis; pivotal connections between the forward ends of the links and the lock body; pivotal connections between the rearward ends of the links and the lock bolt whereby said links constrain the bolt to endwise substantially straight line movement transversely of the cylinder axis; a spring for projecting the bolt in one direction toward a keeper engaging position; and means on one of said links engaged with the lock cylinder and through which movement of the lock cylinder in one direction is translated into retracting motion of the bolt to free the same from its keeper.
11. In a lock device of the character described: a lock body adapted to be stationarily mounted on a door; a lock bolt mounted on the lock body for movement substantially parallel to the door to and from a projected keeper engaging position in which the bolt latches the door closed; an arm pivoted on the lock body and connected with the bolt; an actuator guided in the lock body for movement from an inoperative position to an operative position and connected with said arm to transmit bolt retracting motion to the bolt through said arm by movement of the actuator toward its operative position; and a spring acting on said arm in a direction to project the bolt to its keeper engaging position and reacting on the actuator to yieldingly hold the same in its inoperative position.
12. In a lock device of the character described: a lock body adaptedto be stationarily mounted on a door; an actuator carried by the lock body for motion relative thereto in opposite directions; a lock bolt carried by the lock body for movement substantially parallel to the door toward and from a projected keeper engaging position in which the bolt latches the door closed; means for imparting retracting motion to the bolt to free the same from its keeper including a pivot pin on the lock body, an arm on the bolt rotatably journalled on said pivot pin and having a part disposed alongside the actuator, and a motion transmitting connection between the actuator and said part on the arm by which movement of the actuator in one direction is translated into swinging motion of the arm to carry the bolt to a retracted position disengaged from its keeper; and a combined torsion and compression spring coiled about said pivot pin and reacting on the arm to yieldingly hold the bolt in its projected keeper engaging position while urging the arm toward the side of the actuator.
