To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RIEDRIGH WILLIAM MnLDn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cement- Block Molds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an' improved mold for forming cement blocks in multiples and the object thereof is to provide a single simply constructed form whose shape may be varied at will for constructing blocks of numerous shapes.
IV ith this general object in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and In unique combinations of` parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being sup- -plemented by the accompanying drawings which constitute a part of this application and .in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a mold constructed in accordance with the invention showing the arrangement of parts for forming blocks for use on the inner side of a silo wall or the like; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one series of the side addition members to be described; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device arranged asshown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section taken on the plane indicated by the` line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a view similar to F ig. 1 showing the arrangement of parts for constructing blocks for use on the outer side of a silo wall or the like; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of another series of the side addition members; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section showing thearrangement of parts for constructing rectangular blocks; Fig. 8 is a diagram showing the manner in which a wall for a silo or other curved wall is constructed of the blocks formed in the improved mold.
In specifically describing the construction shown in the drawings above briefly described, similar characters will be placed on corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end, the numerals 1 designate a pair of side boards of suitable proportions, the inner faces of said boards having upright grooves 2 receiving tongues 3 on partitions 4, which partitions are shown in Figs. 1 and 5 as wedge-shaped in cross section, while in Fig. 7, th-e partitions in question are in the form of flat plates preferably of sheet metal. The two side boards 1 are secured in contact with the ends of the partitions 4 by bolts or the like 5.
One edge of each side 1 is concave between the numerous partitions 4 as shown at 6 while the opposite edge thereof between said partitions is convex as indicated at 7. Side extension members 8 are curved on one edge for engagement with theJ edges 6 but straight on their opposite edges, said members being secured by screws or the like to metal bars 9 which may in turn be detachably secured by screws 10 to the sides 1 (see Figs. 5 and 7). Other side addition members 11 are shaped on one edge to engage the convex edges 7 of the sides, said members being secured to metal bars 12 which latter are detachably connected by screws or the like 13 to said convex edges of the'sides (see Figs. 1 and 7).
By the construction described the shape of the mold may be varied at will. In Fig. 1 the members 8 have been removed and sheet metal cores 14 positioned within the numerous compartments and spaced from the partitions 4 as shown, said cores having their upper portions shaped to conform to and spaced from the edges 6 of the sides '1. W'lien the parts are arranged in this manner, the partitions 4 will rest on a pallet board 15 which is interposed between the lower edges of the aforesaid sides. The cement or other material is now poured into the numerous compartments as shown at the left of Fig. 1 and by using a straight edge 16 in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the correct curvature may be imparted to what will be the inner face of the block B, said straight edge resting 0n Vthe concave edges 6 whereby as it is moved along these edges it will properly form the block. After a number of blocks B have been similarly formed and allowed to harden sufficiently, the bolts 5 may be loosened whereupon the mold may be removed from the completed blocks. By
inverting the mold from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that indicated in Fig. 5, by securing the members 8 again imposition and by removing the members 11, the device is applicable for use in casting blocks B for use on the exterior of a curved wall, cores 1li21 of the necessary shape being now employed. In constructing blocks of this type, the straight edge 16 will be used as above described. By securing both sets of addition members 8 and 11 in place as depicted in Fig. 7 and by using rectangular cores 14h, rectangular blocks B2 may be constructed. Here again the straight edge 1G is used as shown.
The blocks B and B are assembled as shown in Fig. 8 for constructinga curved wall of any character, the blocks being particularly applicable for use in erecting siloV walls and well curbings. i It will of course be understood that the blocks B2 are assembled in a similar manner to construct a straight wall. A wall constructed oi any style oit the blocks formed by the improved device will be practically proof against dampness since suicient air space is allowed for adequate ventilation within the wall.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, manner of operation and advantages of the device will be readily understood, and it will be obvious that although the mold is simple and inexpensive, it will be highly eiiicient and durable. In conclusion, I will state that although certain specific details of construction have been shown and described for illustrative purposes, numerous changes in shape, proportion and other minor details may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention. Furthermore, although but two side boards 46 have been shown and described, it will be readily understood that any number thereof might be positioned in parallel relation with partitions a extending therebetween and with forms such as 14, 14a, and 14h located in the numerous compartments thus formed.
I claim:
1. A block mold comprising a pair of sides, and means for varying the shape of the upper edges of said sides for constructing blocks of different designs.
2. A block mold comprising a pair of sides, and a pair of side addition members having lower edges shaped to conform to and adapted to be secured in contact with the upper edges of said sides, the upper edges of said members being differently shaped from the lower edges thereof.V
8. A block mold comprising a pair ofsides cach having a convex and a concave edge, and side addition members curved on one edge for contact with said convex and concave edges, the edges of said members opposite their curved edges being straight.
1. A block mold comprising a pair of sides and a number of transverse partitions extending between them, side addition members having lower edges designed for contact with the upper edges of the sides, the upper edges of said members being shaped differently from said lower edges thereof, and a pair of bars to which the addition members of the two sides are secured.
5. A block mold comprising a pair of sides and a number of transverse partitions extending between them, the edges of each side between said partitions being respectively concave and convex, side vaddition members curved on one edge for contact with said concave and convex edges, the edges of said members opposite their curved edges being straight, and a pair of bars to which said members are secured.
