GEORGE E. VALENTINE, 0F PORT CARBON, PENNSYLVANIA.
JAR OPENER AND HOLDER.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1917.
Application led April 17, 1915. Serial No. 22,114.
To all LU/0m it may concern.'
Beit lrnown that T, GEORGE E. VALENTINE, a citizen of the United States, residingat Port Carbon, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in J ar Openers and Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to jar holders and openers and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient structure of this character which may be employed t0 clamp jar caps of varying sizes or to hold the jars while the caps are being removed.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the opener applied to the cap of an ordinary preserving jar, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, Fig., 8 is a longitudinal section, and F ig. 4 is a sectional View taken through a jar showing the handle applied thereto.
Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, 1 represents a head which is centrally apertured as shown at 2 and provided with diverging arms 3 whose inner faces curve inwardly to the aperture. Passing through the aperture and arranged to conform thereto and to the outline of the arm is a flexible band l preferably of spring steel or similar material which may be, if desired, treated in any suitable manner to increase its frictional qualities as is readily understood by those versed in the art. The inner ends of the band are inserted in a longitudinal kerf formed on the inner end of of a rivet or pin 6. The outer end of the bolt is threaded and surrounding and threaded thereon is a handle which when screwed up upon the bolt, abuts against the head 1 and draws the ends of the band into the aperture 2, thus drawing the band tightly upon the cap or jar. When the handle is screwed upon the threaded shank of the bolt 5, it will force the head of the loop from the flexible band 4, so as to permit the ends of the loop to be drawn along the grooved arms of the head so that the diameter of the loop is reduced and the band is closed to fit tightly on the jar lid. A movement of the handle in one direction will be e'ective in screwing the lid to the jar and a movement in the opposite direction will be effective in removing the lid from the jar.
What is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a head having a central aperture and diverged arms carried thereby, the inner faces of which are curved into the aperture, a eXible band having its terminals passing through the aperture, a hollow handle rotatable against said head, a bolt in said handle connected at one end t0 the ends of the band and provided at the other end with a threaded portion received in a threaded opening in the handle, said handle being rotatable on the bolt and about the head to force the head toward or away from the end of the loop.
In testimony whereof affix my signature in 'presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. VALENTTNE.
