To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. SoHonN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oar-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as. boats and buoys, and more particularly has reference to an oar handle.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above character designed for engagement with the inner or handle portion of an oar serving as a handle or grip so as to obviate formation of blisters, callouses, etc. on the hand of the oarsman, when rowing.
It is an equally important object of the present invention to provide a device of the above character wherein improved means is employed for rotatably mounting the grip proper so that the latter will rotate when the oars are being used.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a View to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction sim ple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out .more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration aconvenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.

In reducing the present invention to actual practice the improved handle or grip is said to consist of a pair of complementa-l sections 5 the inner portions of which are constructed in a substantially V-shaped form so that when placed about the reduced squared end 2 the outer edges will abut each other, while the free edges of the V-shaped portions will abut the shoulders, the parts being retained in such position through the instrumentality of fasteners 6. The outer portions 7 are semi-cylindrical in configuration and when the parts are secured in the manner described they form a substantial sleeve, while a shoulder 8 is formed between the semicylindrical and the squared portions of each section 5.
In order to anchor and brace the section 5, a rod 9 is employed and passed within the sleeve, while the inner end thereof is threaded as at 10 and anchored in the reduced end 2 of the oar. This rod is formed with a transverse opening 11 and designed to bealined with the opposed openings 12 in the semi-cylindrical portion 7 while a rivet 13 is employed and passed through the openings 11 and 12 for securing the rod and portion 7 together. The opposite end of the rod is reduced and squared as indicated by'the numeral 1 1 so as to accommodate a wrench (not shown) which may be used for attaching the rod while the outer edge is further provided with a threaded socket 15 for a purpose that will presently appear.
Rotatably mounted on the semi-cylindrical section 7 is a s1eeve16 which is prevented from displacement by the screws 17 which is anchored in the socket 15 and formed with a disk-like head 18 designed with the,
outer edges of the section 7 and the sleeve 16 to'be arranged in close relation with the outer edges. A grip 19- which may be, and preferably is formed of rubber is now arranged over the sleeve preferably frictionally engaging the latter, while the outer surface of this grip is provided with transversely extending raised portions 20 so as to readily accommodate the hand of the oarsman when gripping the oar.
In use, when the hand of the oarsman is engaged on the grip 19 when manipulating the oar, the sleeve 16 will partially rotate about the semi-cylindrical section 7 so as to relieve friction on the hands of the oarsman and thus prevent the formation of callouses, etc.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof and it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described including a pair of complemental attaching sections, an anchoring and bracing rod arranged between the sections, a sleeve rotatably mounted on the outer portions of the attaching sections, a retaining element anchored in the rod for preventing displacement of the sleeve and a grip surrounding and frictionally engaged on the sleeve and movable therewith.
2. The combination with a reduced inner end of an oar of a pair of complemental attaching sections, the inner portions of which are designed for engagement with the reduced end, while the outer portions are of semi-cylindrical configuration, means for fastening the inner portions to the reduced end so as to arrange the outer portions in the form of a sleeve, a rod passed between the semi-cylindrical portions and anchored in the reduced end of the oar, means for securing the semi-cylindrical portions and the rod together, a sleeve rotatably mounted on the semi-cylindrical portions, a retaining element anchored in the outer end of the rod for preventing displacement of the rotatable sleeve and a grip surrounding and frictionally engaging the rotatable sleeve and movable therewith.

The combination with a reduced inner end of an oar, of a pair of complemental attaching sections, the inner ends of which are substantially V-shaped in cross section, while the outer portions are semicylindrical, means for anchoring the inner portions about the reduced end so that the edges of the inner portions will abut each other while the semi-cylindrical portions will form a sleeve, a rod having one end threaded passed between the semi-cylindrical portion and anchored in the inner end of the rod, the rod and the semi-cylindrical portions being formed with alined openings, a rivet passing through the openings for anchoring the parts together, a sleeve rotatably mounted on the semi-cylindrical portions, a screw anchored in the rod and formed with a disklike head for preventing displacement of the sleeve and a grip surrounding and frictionally engaged on the rotatable sleeve and movable therewith and formed with annular extending raised portions to accon'nnodate the hand of the oarsman.
