INVENTOH 'wa M mvzfy' WITNESSES or wrench for LOUIS HORWATH, OF DONOBA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAN OPENING AND CLOSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 6, 1911.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911. Serial no. 001,124.
To all fwhom itma/y concern:
Bo'it known that I LoUIs subject of the King of un Donora, in the county of ashington and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certhin new and useful Improvements in Can ,0 ening and Closi Devices, of which the fo lowing is a Speci cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing. is invention relates to a jar opening i closing device, and the primary object my invention is to provide a novel deary, residing at jar, whereby it can be removed or placed upon the jar to hermetically seal the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gripping device or wrench of the above type that can be easily and safely handled to remove screw caps from receptacles.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of the above type that is simple in construction, durable, and etlicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
I attain the above objects by a n'lechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had whereinz- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as applied to a jar, Fig. 2 is a Inn of a detached device, and Fig. 3 is a iiQiZOhtfil sectional view of the same.
A device in accordance with this invention comprises a metallic resilient band or strap 1 having one end thereof bent upon itself and riveted, as at 2 to provide a barnel 3. Extending through the barrel 3 is a rivet or pin 4 pivotally supporting parallel bars 5, these bars having the outer ends thereof connected by a pivoted block 6 having trunnions 7 extending through the bars 5. The block 6 has an opening 8 with the wallsthereof threaded to receive a threaded stem 9 of an operating handle 10. The outer provided with a ball or end of the stem 9 is reduced. as at 11 and spherical body 12, said ball or body being suitably fixed or mounted upon the reduced end 11 of the gripping the closure of a to the drawing,
stem 9. The ball 12 is adapted to engage Honwlirn, a l 'in a socket 13 provided therefor in a curved member 14, the member 14 being punched to rovide an opening,
and the material bor ering upon the opening pressed out,
thereby providing the socket 13 to receive the ball 12. Riveted or otherwise connected, as at 15 to the end of the member 14.
is a book 16 adapted to engage in aper-,
tures 17 provided therefor in the stra 1', the apertures bein equally spaced wllrehy adjustments can he obtained. The inner side of the strap 1 is lined by a strip of rubber or other yieldahle material 18 riveted or otherwise connected, as at 19, to the-resilient strap 1. The pivoted bars 5 constitute a yoke for the adjustable stem 9 and a through the medium of theball and socket connection with the member 14 and the stem 9, the ends of the strap 1 can be drawn toward each other whereby the device will frictionally grip the cap or lid 20 of a jar 21.
The device can be used either for screwing thecap 20 upon the jar, or by reversing the device upon the cap it can be used for removing the cap.
The adjustment between the aperturcd end of the strap and the book 16 permits of caps of various diameters being gripped, and the yieldable material of the strap 1 prevents the cap from being injured.
hat I claim is:-
A, device of the type described, comprising a resilient strap having one end thereof a x-rtured, a yoke pi votally connected to the opposite end of said strap,.a pivoted block carried by said yoke, a stem adjustably mounted in said block, a curved member, a ball and socket connection between said member and said'stem, and a hook carried by said member and adapted to engage in one of the apertures of said strap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS HORWATI-I. \Vitncsses:
