Abstract
Abstract of the Disclosure This invention consist of a universal implement which may be used to open all screw-on and twist-on lids on glass jars and to loosen and tighten oil filters of all diameters on motor vehicles and the like.
Several gadgets to open lids on glass jars are already available. however to the best of my knowledge, non of these fulfills its purpose without the user also having to resort to banging the lid or putting it under hot water, both a time-consuming and frustrating exercise, The adjustability of this implement makes it ideal for use on the various-size oil filters on motor vehicles and the like and there is on longer the rubbing of metal against metal when such filters are opened.

Description
SPECIFICATION
This invention relates to a universal implement which may be used to open all screw-on and twist-on lids on containers such as glass jars and to loosen and tighten oil filters of all diameters on motor vehicles and the like.
The advantages provided by this invention are evidenced by the fact that the adjustable flat belt with the soft nubs on the inside, rests against the outer rim of the lid to be opened, and by squeezing the handle together, the belt is tightened against the lid making any slippage impossible. There is sufficient leverage to enable all sizes of lids to be opened. The belt can be adjusted to any size of lid by opening the handles and pulling the belt to the required size. The grooved handles retain the ends of the adjustable flat belt and secure it tightly when squeezed together. The same advantages apply to oil filters on motor vehicles and the like.
In drawings which illustrate the principal uses of this invention, Figure 1 is a top-down view of the implement, Figure 2 is a side view of the implement, Figure 3 is a side view of the U-shaped holding clamp, Figure 4 is a frontal view of the U-shaped holding clamp.
Figure 1 illustrates a circular space into which lids of containers such as glass jars, oil filters for motor vehicles and the like are placed.
Belt 2 is plaoed around the circumference of the lid or filter and is adjusted to the circumference by pulling tight at end 14 of belt 2.
Handle 3 is composed of two parts 4 and 6.
A U-shaped clamp 5 is firmly attached to handle part 4 and the arms 7 of the clamp reach to handle part 6 and are held in place by a bolt 8 which permits handle part 6 to move.
The two bolts 13 serve to hold the U-shaped holding clamp 5. When the two handle parts 4 and 6 are opened, the belt is released and the loop may be adjusted to any size of lid or oil filter. The two holding arms 7 of clamp 5 can also be molded directly to handle part 4 without the use of clamp 5. The same procedure is used for oil filters on motor vehicles and the like.
One end of belt 2 is attached with bolt 9 in slot 1O in handle part 4. Belt 2 is constructed with soft nubs 11 which attach themselves to any surface and prevent belt 2 from slipping.
Grooves 12 on the inside of the two handle parts 4 and 6 serve to tighten the belt around the object to be loosened or tightened and to hold the belt firmly in place when the two parts of handle 4 and 6 are squeezed together. The handle is gripped firmly together, and with the loop of belt 2 around the object to be loosened or tightened, is twisted and the desired objective is achieved.

Claims (2)
1. An implement for the opening of lids on containers such as glass jars and for loosening and tightening oil filters on motor vehicles and the like, comprising a handle member made up of two handle parts, said handle parts having mutually engaging intergrooved inner surfaces when in a closed position, a slot formed in one of said handle parts, a belt for encircling an object to be loosened or tightened, means for fastening one end of said belt extending between said mutually engaging surfaces, a U-shaped clamp surrounding said handle parts and fastened thereto at one end thereof, one of said handle parts being pivoted in relation to said other handle part in said U-shaped clamp, whereby closing of said handle parts results in the squeezing said other end of said belt therebetween to effect loosening or tightening of said object by manipulation of said handle member.
2. The implement of Claim 1, wherein said belt has soft nubs on the inner surface thereof.
