CLEVIS FOR ROAD-SCRAPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 30, P917.
Application filed May 2, 1916. Serial No. 94,906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHUFFORD C. LEDBET- ran, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edneyville, in the county of Henderson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glevises for Road-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clevises for road scrapers and the principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a clevis which will enable the use of a road scraper or scoop for cutting along gutters and at points where a sharp clean cut is desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be used either in the ordinary way or when desired may be congected so as to cut on both sides of the roa A still further object of the invention is to provide a clevis which may be constructed of any suitable material but preferably of a heavy Wire or rod bent to proper shape.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the road scraper showing this improved clevis applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the clevis. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the connecting element between the clevis and the hail of the road scraper or scoop, and Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the road scraper in use and the operation of the clevis.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a scoop of the ordinary structure provided with the usual handles 2 and having secured thereto the usual bail 3.
The clevis which is illustrated in Fig. 2 consists of a substantially V-shaped frame 4 which is formed of a single rod or wire which is bent to form a substantially V- shaped slot, the front and rear walls of which are arranged parallel as clearly shown. The ends of the bar are intertwisted to form the stem designated generally by the numeral 5 and one of said ends is extended and bent back upon itself as at 6 to provide the eye 7 for supporting the link 8 in operative position which is adapted for use when the scoop is used in the ordinary way.
In order to connect the clevis to the bail the connecting element best illustrated in Fig. 3 is provided and consists of a sleeve 9 having formed at its rear end the outwardly extending arms 10 which are bent to form the eyes 11 which surround the bail as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The stem 5 of the clevis is passed through the sleeve 9 and may be secured therein in any suitable manner or by soldering or welding and it will be seen that a thumb connection is made between the bail and clevis.
In use it will be seen that when the road scraper is used in the center of the road and in the ordinary way the swingletree or whiflietree is attached to the links 8 and the scoop will be drawn in a plane parallel to its longitudinal axis. When it is desired to cut a sharp corner along the side of the road to form a ditch or the like it will be apparent that the swingletree or whiflietree is attached in the clevis as illustrated in Fig. a and when in this position it will be evident that the longitudinal axis of the scoop will be arranged angularly with relation to the direction of travel and thus a sharp cutting will be insured. It will be understood that the whiflietree or swingletree may be connected in either end of the clevis so that the scoop may be used to out both sides of the road.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is A clevis of the class described comprising a bar of material bent to form a \l-shaped slot, the ends of said bar being intertwisted, a stem formed by the intertwisted portion,
