'Vo release the type. I provide a handle :En which is provided with a noseto Contact with van axially 'placed pin 21 in the holder. When it is desired to operate the handle to vrelease the type slugs, a latch 65 is first released froln engagement with a hook G6. This catch 65 is normally held in engagement with the hook 66 by means of a spring, the latch being pivoted in the handle 20. A plunger 67 is longitudinally mounted in the handle 20. By pressing upward upon the button on the lower end of this plunger, the
spring pressed latch will be rocked in a to slide into and seat in the Vbearing of side frame 10. To hold the holder 14 in in position, I provide a cap screw 26 which extendsoutward from frame 10 and which is adapted to engage a camming projection ol sleeve 23 when it is desired to lock the left hand holder in in position. This construction is fullydescribed-in my oopending application above referred to. It is sufficient to say that'the locking is brought about by rocking the handle 20 about the center of the carrier as an' axis which serves to engage the cap screw 26 with a cam. edge on the sleeve 23. To unlock the carrier the handle 'is given a reverse movement which alines the cap screw with a notch in the bearing sleeve 23. Thereafter the carrier may be withdrawn in an axial direction laterally of the frame lll- 11.
It will be understood thatvthe slug securing means on the right hand holder, (which i I will designate 15) is 'a duplicate of the slug securing means onthe left Vhand holder.
A similar cap screw 27 is used which extends outward from frame 11 to lock the right hand holder in in position. This cap screw coperates with la cam edge and notch on an outer annular member 28'ofthe' holder 15 in a similar manner to the corresponding' parts'on the left hand holder. Driving connection to left hand holder MfEXtending from the body portion ofv the 'left hand holder and integral therewith. is a. shaft 29 which extends to theright and .which is secured by means ofa pin 30 to sleeve 3l which carries-thetapered cam abutment for the slugs, and by means of the' same pin 3() to a bearing sleeve 32 which rests in ac hearing in the right hand side frame 11 when the left hand holder is in in position, as shown in Fig. 1. Integral with the bearing sleeve 32 is a spur gear 33, which gear enmeshes with the driving gear 12, when the left hand holder 14 is in in` position. The outside diameter of the teeth of this gear 33 is slightly less than the outer diam- 7,.: eter of the bearing sleeve in order that this gear 33 may pass through the bearing in the side frame when the holders are shifted.
'Construction of rg/Lt )1a/nd hoZder.-'-VVhen right hand holder 15 is in outer position (shown in Fig. l) it is necessary that this holder remain stationary with respect to the holder 14. Otherwise it would be impossible to change the type or slugs when the machine is in operation. To this end the body portion 34 is provided with a stub shaft 35 which stub shaft is rigidly secured to the body portion of the holder and to sleeve 3G by means of a pin 37. This stub shaft has integral therewith an enlarged circular head 8;-, 38 which is revoluble in a recess in sleeve 32. Bearing sleeve 39 is integral with sleeve 3G 'and is adapted to fit in the bearing in the left hand. 'iframe 1() whenthe Aright hand holder 15 is in in position. Roter/0a pff'creataff/ devices-In order that slugs be replaced it is necessary that some means be provided for preventing the rotation of the disengaged holder, otherwise the friction of the parts might be sufficient to rotate the holder, and this would be exceedingly dangerous to those in the vicinity of the machine. In order to prevent such rotation of the disengaged holder the central slot of slots 4-0, which I will term 40, is extended througl'i the parts of'the left hand holder, including the sleeve 32, the body portion and sleeve The slot 4.0 also extends through the face of this bearing sleeve 23 and annular member of the right hand holder, and at these points the size of the slot 1s increased as shown by i. the notches at ll5 and elfhFigs. l and 5.
This increase of size is necessary to permit the rocking of the sleeves and annular mem bers to disengage the cap screws 26 and 27 from their .respective notches.- Engaging the slot 40 at both. sides of the machine are toothed pieces 47 and 48. 47 is secured to the frame 10 and rests in the notch l5 of the bearing sleeve 23, when the left hand holder 14 is at in. Then in this position the toothed i'iiece 4-7 does not interfere with the rotation of the left hand holder, since sleeve is freely rotatable with respect to the holder. -When the right hand holder is out the notched piece LIS, which is secuiied to the frame 1.1, extends up and engages the slot 40% of the right hand holder and thereby prevents its rotation. In this way it is possible to release the engaged slug holder from either side of the machine.
In case the operator has any difficulty in alining the slots el() with the driving gear 12`I provide means for swinging the `holder bodily by manipulation of the handle 20a. This structure, although not absolutely necessai-y, permits the operator to swing the holder if the alining devices were broken or for any other desired reason. VFor this purpose I provide the following mechanism:

These cups are arranged in circle on the side of this gear. By pressing inward on the handle Q01 (left hand handle) the nose 74- of the handlewill rock the pivol'cd pawl 7l and depress the plu nger 72 into engagement with the cups in4 gear lf3. rlihereaftel' the swinging of the handle 2Wl will be effective to rotate thc right hand holder l5. This construction enables the operator of the machine to aline the holder without touching lthe holder itself. The handle 20a also gives more leverage for rotating the carrier.
It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the precise details described and illustrated, but is suscentibleof various i embodiments. The terms used inthe specification are also to be understood to be terms of description and not of limitation.
lVhat I claim'as my invention is particularly pointed out in the appended claims:
1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a plurality of composition carriers, said carriers being movable in the direction of their axes, means for securing.l composition to each of said carriers, and
means for retaining said carriers in either of two axial positions whereby when in one position one carrier is in position for printing and the second carrier is in an accessible position for changing type and wherebyl when in the` other position the first carrierl is accessible for changing type and the second mentioned carrier is in position for printing.
2. In a printing machine, in combination, a`plurality of composition carriers axially alined one with the other and movable in .the direction of their common axis, means for securing composition to the said carriers,
and means for retaining said carriers in either of two axial positions, said carriers' when in one position placing one carrier in printing position and the4 other in yan accessible position for changing composition and when in the other position placing the last mentioned vcarrier `in printing position and -the rst mentioned carrier in accessible p'osition for changing composition.
' 3. In a printing machine, in combination, a composition carrying mandrel adapted to be shifted laterally i'n the plane of a printing machine, means for independently rotating a plurality of' means for securing independent pieces of composition to said carrier, said means being independent of each other, means forretaining said mandrel in either of two positions whereby one or the other of the sets of composition is brought into printing position and whereby the other set of composition is brought to an accessible position for replacement ,or cleaning.
4. In a printing machine, in combination,
. a composition carrying mandrel adapted to be shifted laterally in the frame of a printving machine,.said mandrel having two axially alined portions independently rotatable with respect to each other, and means for shifting said mandrel to .engage and disdisengage and engage the other portion with the driving means. I
6. In a printing machine, in combination, a plurality of independently rotatable composition carriers, means for detachably securing composition thereto, a driving means and manually operable meansfor selectively engaging either of said carriers with the driving means. v
7 In a' printing machine, in combination, a plurality of independently rotatable composition carriers, means for detachably securing composition thereto and means for releasing the said composition securing I'neans whereby the composition may be readily removed` from the carrier, a driving means, means for selectively engaging either of said carriers with the drivingmeans, said means having provisions for rotating one carrier and at the same time for disengaging the other carrier.
8. In a printing machine,.in combination, a plurality of independently rotatable composition carriers, means forydetachably securing composition thereto and manually operable means for releasing the composition securing means whereby the composition maybe readily released and replaced, a driving means, means for selectively engaging either of said carriers with said driving means, and means associated with said carriers for timing said carriers with the driving means upon the engagement of said carriers with the driving means.
9. In a'printing machine, in combination, a plurality of independently rotatable slug holders, driving gears thereon, slug securing devices onsaid` holders, a driving gear, means for shifting said holders in position to engage or disengage their respective gears with the driving gear, and means on said carriers to properly aline the gears and the driving gear whereby correct angular alinement and timing is secured between the engaged gear-and its associated holder and the 4driving gear.
- 10. In a printing machine, incombination, a frame, type carriers movable 'laterally in said frame, handles on said carriers for shifting type securing means' on said. carriers and means operable by the handles to disengage the type and permit their replacement,
.sleeves revolublv mounted on saidcarriers and means associated with said sleeves and handles for securing the carriers in position on the frame but at the same time permitting their rotation therein'.

In a printing machine, in combination, a pluralitv of composition carriers, said carriers being movable in the direction of their axes, means for securing compo sition to each otl said carriers, means for retaining said carriers in either of two positions, means for sliding said carriers axially when disengaged from the aforesaid detaining means, a common driving means, and means associated with the carriers for alining and timing the carriers when they are slid axially, said means being adapted to cause the composition on one holder to be placed in proper angular relation to the driving means.

In a printing machine, having a frame, in combination, a plurality of composition holders, saidholders being movable in the direction of their axes into and out of the frame, means associated with the' holders and the frame for securing said holders in in or out position with respect to said frame, means for securing comp0 i sition to said holders, means for sliding said holders in the frame when disengaged from the aforesaid first mentioned securing means, a driving means, saidcarriers being engaged with said driving means when they are in in position and disengaged therefrom when in-out position, and an alining and timing means for causing the engaged .carrier to be properly timed and allined with the driving means when in in position.

In a printing machine, in combination, a plurality of independently rotatable composition carriers, means for detachably securing composition thereto and means for operating said compositionsecuring means whereby the composition may be readily re- `placed, a driving means, means for selectively engaging one ot'n said carriers with said driving means, and means for alining and timing the driving means and the said carriers with respect to each other.

In a printing machine, in combination, a plurality or' independently rotatable composition carriers, means for detachably securing composition thereto andmeans for operating said composition securing means whereby the composition may be readily replaced, a driving means, means for selectively engaging one of said carriers W-ith said driving means, and means for preventing the rotation of one carrier which is out of engagement with the driving means whereby the type thereon are readily accessible for replacement or cleaning.

In a printing machine, in combination, a plurality of independently rotatable coml'iosition carriers, means for detacliably securing composition thereto, a driving means, means for selectively engaging one of said carriers with said driving means, and means for preventing the rotation of one Vcarrieil which is out of engagement with the driving means, the ,said rotation preventing means being adapted to aline the disengaged carrier with the drii'ing means when it is engaged therewith.
17. "In a printing machine, in combination, a frame, a plurality of independently rotatable composition carriers, means for securing either of said carriers in position in the said fraine,means for disengaging said retaining means, said means being operable.

18. In a printing machine, in. combinaltion, a frame, a plurality of independently rotatable composition carriers, a plurality of retaining means for retaining said carriers in either of two axial positions 1n said frame,
and means for disengaging the engaged retaining means, said means beingoperable from the side of the machineoiiposite to that of the engaged. retaining means whereby an operator on either side ofthe machine may release thc engaged carrier and slide the other carrier to operating -position within the frame. l

In a printing machine, in combination, a frame, a plural-ity of independently rotatable composition carriers, means for retaining said carriers in either of two axial positions whereby when in one position one carrier is in position Por printing and the second carrier is in accessible posi-tion for changing type and whereby, when in the other position, the first carrier is accessible for changing type and the second mentioned Vcarrier is in position for printing and means operable from either side of the machine for releasing the engaged carrier whereby an operator may release the carrier from either side of themachine. i
