' Application filed September To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD V. UHLIG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Rutherford, in" the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Type Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification. This invention is. an improvement in line-- spacing mechanisms for typewriters. The usual pawl and ratchet line-spacing mechanism for typewriting machines enables the operator to space his lines apart a set or fixed minimum distance or multiples of that the operator desires to e distance--that is, to the usual regular extent. It frequently ha pens however that ect a fine alteration in the spacing of the typewritten lines in which event he must space the sheet by hand, depending upon his eye alone. j
The prmcipal object of my invention is to render it convenient in a machine having any line-spacing mechanism, for the operator to obtain minute regulation-that is, regulation complete, within extremes of adjustmentof the line-spacing when desired,
' as in feeding ruled sheets through the machine; whereby he is enabled either to space the typewritten lines at the intervals usual in typewriting machines, or to obtain variations and fine regulation of such intervals. To this} end I have combined, with the main spacing mechanism such as a pawl-and ratchet mechanism of the ordinary type, an auxiliary line-spacing mechanism, each mechanism being provided with an adjustment which in one case enables the operator to vary the line-spacing by unitary amounts or intervals in the usual manner, and in the other case, enables the operator to maintain any desired interval between the lines.
I provide, in addition to the usual unitary predetermined regular line-spacing mechanism, an auxiliary spacing mechanism including a supplementary clutch wheel for effecting fine variations in the line-space in terval, and a dog to rotate the clutch wheel, and adjustment being provided to control the throw of the dog. Either of the linespacing devices may be operated at will, by means of a single line-spacing lever-of the usual type. A tooth operated by said lever is shiftably mounted so as to'operate'either will.
