MECHANISM son ASSEMBLING Ann DISTRIBUTING TYPE.
Patented Apr. 25, 1911.
Application filed July 22, 1907. SerialNo. 384,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. OsBoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Assembling and Distributing Type, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de transferred to the printing mechanism, and
afterthe matter is printed, the type re-trans ferred to holder, from which the present machinedistributes the type into the sup- The invcntion is capable of various cmbodilnents. It is shown herein as a small oflice machine using-type adapted to print in imitation of typewritten 1natter-the va rious characters of such type having all the same sized body.
The invention is hereinafter more fully describedand its essential characteristics set out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine; Fig. 2 is a vertical axial section thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan; Fig. 4c is ahorizontal section substantially on the lineH of Fig. 2-; Fig. 5 is a detail in sec tion on the line 5-5v of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a perspective of a type of the class which this particular embodiment carries.
The frame of my machine comprises abase plate 10, a top plate 11, and suitable connecting rods 12, of which three are shown, located between the base and top plate.
These rods may be secured by suitable screws passing through ears on the plates.
15. represents a vertical type-carrying drum, frame described. This drum is'built up of rails 16, secured to the periphery of spiders 17,. 18 and 19. These spiders are rigidly mounted one central shaft 20, which is journaled in bushingsgl and 22, set onto the top' which is rotatably mounted in the and bottom frame plates. A suitable thrust bearing is provided for the lower end of the shaft 20. This bearing is shown as a conically pointed screw 2e, which. is axially mountedin a depressed portion of the base plate, being adjustably locked by the jamnut 25. On the upper end of the shaft 20 is a hand wheel by which the drum may be turned to any position desired.
The rails 16, on the perlphery of the drum,
have overhanging edges, whereby they are adapted to confine type grooved in 'their sides, such type are shown individually in Fig. 6 and shown at 32 in Figs. 2 and 5. y
35- indicates a temporary type-holder adapted to contain the type to be distributed. This type holder is shown as a split tube, the edges of the tube adjacent to the split being adapted to enter the grooves of the type as shown in Fig. 5. This tube 35 is carried in a partially tubular socket 28, on the forward portion of the top plate 11. Similarly, a
split tube 36 for receiving the type being assembled is carried by a partially tubular socket 29 on the front side of the base plate 10. These split tubes may be held in place by their own elasticity in their respective sockets. v a
'With a structure as above described, it
will be seen that with type contained in'the tube 35, it is only necessary in distributing, to turn the drum by its hand wheel to bring the proper channel, provided by adjacent rails 16, into position, and transfer the type from the tube 35 into such channel. Similarly, in assembling, the drum is turned by the hand wheel to bring the proper channel to the front, and suitable transfer mecha; msm is operated toconvey the type from the bottom of the drum into the assembling tube 36. These transfer mechanisms will now be described. v
Slidabl-y mounted in a radial groove 40 on the underside of the top plate 11 is a.
sliding plate 41. This plate is of thesame v of the type and has an opening 42 formed thickness as the corresponding dimension of the proper shape'to receive the type. .This opening is. normally column of type in the carrier 35, so that the bottom type normall occupies the opening. A plate 43 belowt e opening. prevents the type from dropping out of the slide.
The slide is normal directly below a y in its outerm st position, and when shoved inward, the single .type contained in the opening 42, is carried over the upper end of the-typechannellocated beneath it, and accoroin'gly'drops into,
'5 that channel. 7
To assemble the type from the lower end of the drum into thefassemblingiatube 36,-1 provide an identical slide 51 mounted in a radial groove 50 in the upper face of the base plate 10. This slide has a t ,pe carrying opening 52 normally locate over the channel which leads to' the tube 36,;this channel being provided by the pair of plates 53 carried on the front; side of the base nel which is at the front, normally rests on pushed rearwardly,
the bottom type in the drum channel d'rops into the opening 52 -'and on the return'movement of this slide, f
into the column for this t Be is dropped 11 Each of the slides 41 held in its forward position by a spring 44, which is secured at one end to ,a stationa stop 45 and at the other to a pin 46 secured to the slide. A suitable pin 47 extending through a slot 48 'in' the slide limits the movement ofthe slide. A head or knob 49, is provided at the outer end of the slide, to receive the operators thumb or fin r, whereby the slide may,: be convenient y pushed rearwardl v y To enable the drum to and 51 is normally be properly lo- I provide first, an indicator assisting the operator in positioning the drum, and second, 'lOCklIIg devices to insure accurate position of the drum and to hold it in such position during the transfer of the type. These features .will now be described. The lperiphery of the hand wheel 30 is 'pr'efera indicating characters, corres type in the respective channe of the drum, ese indications being shown at in Fi 1. Cooperating withthe characters of this indicator is a pointer 61, carried by the top plate 11. This construction enables the operator to very easily position the drum with approximate accuracy; Y To insure absolute accuracy, and the holding of the'drum', I provide on the up face of the spider 17, and also on theflower 55 face of the s ider 19, a. ring 64 having in its periphery -shaped notches, one' for each.
ty e. channel; This ring may ad usted and held in position by'screws 65, passing through slotted openings 'in the ring. Cooperating with this rim is a lug 67, carried by the corresponding side '41 or 51, and having a Vshaped nose adapted to enter an ring. The drum. is brough 65pos1tion by the hand onding to the 45 is so nearly into 'wheel that whenever .that I have provided a case or assembled from it. cheapness of plate 10. The lowest type in the drum bhanshort grooved type, all having the same units in the ty example) and all erly positioned cooperating cated for eitherdistributing or assembling,
separate application hereinafter filed.
1y flattened and is provided with ,ing slides, whether each sli be accurately of the V-shaped notches of the a lug 67 enters the correspondingnotch of accurately positioning the drum. It will be seen from the above description, type case adaptedv to contain a supply of type, and have combined this with very simple mechanism by which type may be distributed into the Simplicity and construction are valuable attributes of my'machine. i
This machine as shown, is adapted for embodiment'in a small structure, which ma conveniently stand on a table,-the tube 36 overhanging the edge of the table and the hand wheel being conveniently placed for the operator sitting at the table.
' he machine is shown as perating with one of the body, such as used on the multigraph; If desired, however, the mechanismcan bearranged for carrying other. styles of tgy" If the type are, of difierent-thickness, 51
slides 41 and 51' may be made of a: number of superimposed thin plates; as'many' of them operating concurrently as there are e. Thus,"for example, the font of type as seven different units if body, there would beseven plates, one plate being used for the narrowest letter-(i, for" the plates being used for' the widest letter, W. With such construction, theslides and drum would carry propshoulders to bring into action the number of slides cor-- res onding to -the number of units in the body of'the type which the channel of the drum in active position is designed to carry. These features, may be covered in a Theresent invention is designed to cover'a rum with assembling and distribute is a unitary member or a multiple member. I'claim, r 1.
