The object of this invention is to provide a simple and elficient handhctuated machine for assembling and distributing type.
The machine is well adapted for use in conjunction with a hand printing machine. It carries a supply of type and has handoperative'mechanism which may assemble the type in desired words in a temporary holder. The holder may then be transferred to the printing mechanism, and, after the matter is printed, the type re-transferred to the holder, which is then placed in the present machine and the type distributed. The invention is parlicularly well adapted for embodiment in a small office machine using typo adapted to print in imitation of typewritten mattcr-the various characters of such type having all the same sized body.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and its essential I characteristics set out in the clain'is.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, a statimnzry vertical drum 1 is provided, which is shown as carried by a walhplatc 2 which has projecting. from it studs 3 connected to the drum. Mounted axially in the drum is a shaft? on which. is a bevel gear 8. This gear is loose on the shaft, and carries one or more pins 9 which extend loosely through a collar 10 secured to the shaft. By this means the gear is compelled to rotate with the shaft while the shaft may slide some distance through the gear. This gear 8 meshes with another gear 11 which is on a horizontal shaft 12 extending to the front of the machine. 011 the front end of this machine is a knob 13 by which it may be turned, such action rotating the,shaft 7. On the ends of the shaft 7 are a pair ofarms 1 and 15, .one above the drum and the other below'it. Secured to the drum in a stationary manner is a dial 16 surrounding the shaft 12.-

By turning the knob 3 those holders are thus brought over or under-the channels which contain the type corresponding to the character on the dial opposite the ointer. The shaft 7 has a limited up and down movemcnt,and mechanism is provided, to be hereinafter described, which operates to distribute type from the tube 18 into the channel beneath. the same. when the shaft is lowered and to assemble type from the drum into the holder 19 beneath it when the shaft is elevated. This shaft 7 is mounted to have the limited longi- "tudinal movement referred to by reasonof a pair of springs 21 and 22 sun-minding the shaft and held between collars 2?) and 24' with the bearings o the shaft in its normal position. They do not, therefore, interfere with the free rotation of the shaft under the influence of the knob 13. Secured to the shaft is a grooved collar 28 in which extends a crank arm 29 carried by a rock shaft 30 on the forward end of which is a key lever 31. This key lever has two keys on opposite sides of its axis. When one of these keys is depressed the shaft is thereby drawn downward, while when the other is depressed it is raised.
In assembling the type from the drum into the'temporary holders 19, the knob 13 .is turned until the pointer indicates the character desired, when the lever key 31 is depressed to raise shaft 7. This raises the arm 15 and causes a dog 38 carried thereby to engage a star wheel 34 mounted on a wire 36 behind the corresponding type channel, there being a wheel for each channel. The teeth of this wheel on its forward side engages the type and the movement of the wheel caused by the actuator or dog acting on it shoves downward and releases the bottommost type, which passes into tube 19. A suitable stop, as for example, a split ring 38, is provided on this tube to prevent the type from droppingout. Every time shaft 7 is raised a type is fed from the drum into the tube 19. Between the depressions of the finger key the arms are rotated to bring them in alinement with the channel desired. The operation is thus 'to alternately rotate the knob and depress the proper finger key,
this operation'rcsulting in assembling type into desired words in the tube 19. Suitable springs 40 and 41 act on the dog and the star wheel 34. Spring 41 may conveniently be double, like a hair-pin, and act on two adjacent star wheels. To prevent improper positioning of the tube 19 in its socket of the arm 15, I form a. notch 45 (Fig. 8) in the upper end of the tube and a small projection 46 which engages this notch when the tube is in place. To insure the tube being in alinement with the type channel, I provide a tapered pin 47 (Figs. 6 and 8), which, as the arm approaches the drum, engages in the channel adj aeent to the one being operated upon and thereby accurately positions the arm.
The distributing arm 14- carricd at the upper end of the shaft 7, has near its for- Ward'end a star wheel 50 adapted to engage the type in the tube 18, or just below it. This star wheel is operated by a pawl 5i which is loosely pivoted on the arm and is adapted to be raised by engagement with the uppermost spider whenever the shaft 7 is drawn downward. The pawl isso carried by the arm that it may have backward as Well as upward movement, by reason of having'slots and enlarged openings around the supporting'points, as shown in Fig. 7, Suitable springs 52 and 53 act on. the pawl to keep it in place and allow this movement. and a detent spring 54 acts on the star wheel, A pin 55 is carried by this arm to engage in the channel adj0i1'1in, to the one in action to cause accurate alinement. The operation of the arms 14 and 15 is therefore, similar. Arm 14 however, carries the distributing star wheel 50, as explained, while at the lower end of the drum the star wheels are carried by the drum itself, one for each type channel.
It will be seen from the above description that the machine is very simple in construction. It is also simple in operation, it being only necessary to rotate the knob with one hand and operate the key lever with the other to distribute or assemble as desired. The temporary type holders are removed from the machine when lillcd and their contents transferred to a printing mechanism,
or a printing mechanism. might be provided which would receive and clamp the holders with the type.
I claim:
1. The combination with assembling mechanism and distributing mccl'ianism, of cum porary type holders arranged to he removably carried by either of said mechanisms, said type holders comprising split tubes, the edges adjacent to the split being adapted to occupy grooves in the type.

The combination of a series of typeholders down which type may slide by gravity, a typeholdor mounted below such series and adapted to move and have its upper end in proximity with the lower end of any one of such holders, and means for moving such last mentioned holder transversely of its first movement, and mechanism whereby such movement operates to transfer the type from one of the series of type holders into the movable holder.

The combination of a stationary storage member having a series of parallel type holding channels down which type may slide by gravity, mechanism movable crosswise of the end of such member and adapted to receive type ejected therefrom, mechanism for moving the last-mentioned mechanism transversely of its said crosswise movement, and a discharge controller for the type actuated by such transverse movement.

The combination, with a supply memher having channels down which type may pass by gravity, of hand actuated means for distributing type into the upper end of it, hand actuated means for assembling type from the lower end thereof, and a tubular type holder having a slot parallel with its axis, said slot being of a width substantially equal to the width of any of said channels.

The combination of a series of typehol ders arranged in a bank down which type may pass by gravity, an individual typeholder movable crosswise of the lower end of such bank, and means for moving such individual typeholder toward the holder of the bank to which it stands opposite and simultaneously releasing type from the bank to pass into such individual typeholder.

In a typesetting machine, the combination of a stationary storage member having typeholders adapted to carry individual columns of type descending by gravity, one type above the other, means for preventing the type dropping out of their holders, an individual column typeholdcr, means for moving it transversely of the holders of the storage, member to position it, means for thereafter giving it a movement to bring its upper end closer to the selected typcholder of the storage member, and means whereby such movement acts on the means which prevent the escape of the type from the storage member, and allow the bottom type to drop into the individual holder.

A type case having a set of parallel rails with overhanging edges providing type channels between them down which type may pass by gravity in columns, means at the bottom of each column of type for supporting it, a receiving typeholder having apair of separated edges adapted to aline with the overhanging portions of adjacent rails, means for controlling the move'ment of such typeholder whereby it moves in a path transversely to the lower ends of said parallel typeholdcr, and means for giving said receiving ty-peholder another movement to cause it to receive thc lowermost type in one of the columns.

A type case having parallel typeholdcrs down which type may pass by gravity in columns, means at the bottom of each col uinn forsupporting such type, a receiving typeholder, means for controlling its movement whereby, it may move in a path transversely to the lower ends of said parallclholders, a linger key, and mechanism controlled thereby for moving the receiving typeholder toward the lower end of the type case to receive the lowermost type in. an adjacent: channel.

The combination of a stationary type case having parallel typeholders composed of a series of up and down rails with edges overhanging in both directions whereby between each two rails is an undercut type the receiving l'ypcholde'r wh ea properly positioned to move toward one of the parallel typeholders to enable it to receive the lowermost type.

A multi-channeled typeholder having parallel rails wit-h overhanging edges adapted to confine grooved type, a cooperating relatively movable typeholder having a type channel adapted to longitudinally aline with any of the channels of the typeholder, and a projection movable therewith adapted to enter between rails at one side of those Whose channel alin es with said cooperating typeholder and insures accurate alinement of the respective channels.-

The combination of a multi-channeled typeholder adapted to, loosely confine grooved type, a cooperating relativelymovable typeholder maintained in longitudinal alinement- With said multi-channeled holder and movable transversely to aline with any channel thereof, and a projection movable with such cooperating typeholder and adapted to enter a channel at one side of the channel with which the typeholder coacts.

The combination of a multi-channeled typeholder consisting of a vertical drum having about .its'periphe ry parallel overhanging rails, a cooperating relatively movable typeholder having a pair of separated edges adapted to aline with the overhanging portions of adjacent rails, means for moving such cooperating typeholder in an are about the end of the drum, means for moving it toward the drum, and a projection movable with it and adapted to enter be tween adjacent r'ails on such movement.
95. The combination of a magazine having a p urality of type channels adapted to contai each a line of type having beveled feet,
a type holder movable transversely of said channels, a releasing device for the type adapted to act on their beveled feet, and
vmechanism for operating said device to transfer the type from said magazine to said holder.

The combination, with a magazine provided with a plurality of type channels, of a typeholder mounted on the machine and cooperating with the magazine, means for revolving one of such parts with reference to the other, means for locking the revolved part, and means for distributing the type singly from one of such parts to the other, said means engaging the foot of the type'and forcing. it positively in the direction of the length of the'column of type.

The combination of a stationary type case having parallel gravitation channels side by side with open ends, a distributing stick movable transversely to the upper end of the type case, an assemblage stick movable transversely to the lower end of the type case, means at the lower end of each channel of the type case for supporting the columns therein, means, at the lower end of the distributing stick for supporting the column in it, a pair of finger devices, and mechanism controlled thereby for ejecting the bottommost type of the distributing stick into the type case and for ejecting the bottommost type in the type case into the assemblage stick.

The combination, with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels adapted to contain each a line of loose type with beveled feet, a type holder movable transversely of said channels, a series of releasing devices adapted to operate on the bevels of the type, and common operating means for the various releasing devices.

The combinationof a magazine in the form of an upright drum adapted to carry columns of type in its periphery, a series of ejectors for the type, each adapted to engage the type in its respective column and move with such type to shove it lengthwise of the column, common means for operating the various ejectors, and means for changing the relation of the drum to said commor *ieans by rotating one of them 100. The combination, with an upright type case composed of a seriesof parallel rails with edges overhanging in both directions whereby each rail forms the wall of two adjacent channels, of a cooperating singlcrow typeholder comprising a tube having a slot parallel with its axis, the edges of the tube on opposite sides-ofthe slot being adapted to -aline with the Ioverhanging portions of adjacent rails, means for supporting an upright column of type in the tube, and means for releasing the bottommost type.

The combination, with a type case composed of a series of parallel rails with edges overhanging in both directions whereby each rail forms the wall of two adjacent channels, of a cooperating single-row typeholder comprising a tube having a slot par allel with its axis, the edges of the tube on aline-Withthe overhanging portions of adjacent rails, and a projection carried by such tube and adapted to enter a channel alongside of the one with which thetube alines.

In a typesetting maehine,the combination of a storage drum having a plurality of type channels arranged in its periphery, a revoluble shaft at the axis of said drum, a transverse shaft, gearing between the same and the revoluble shaft, ahand wheel on the forward end of the transverse shaft,a common' type channel, said common type chan- 'nel and drum being adapted .to have their mutual presentation changed by means'of one of them being mounted on said revoluble shaft and the other being stationarily carried.

The combination of an upright drum having a plurality of typeholding channels in its periphery, a .typeholder above the drum and a typeholder below the drum, hand-controlled means for discharging type from the upper typeholder into the drum 1 andhand-controlled means for discharging type from the drum into the lower type- "hofder, and mechanism for simultaneously changing the mutual resentation of the drum and both typehold rs.

The combination of an upright storage drum having typeholding channels in its periphery, a shaft at the' axis of said drum, means for turning one of said members with reference to the other upon said axis, a typeholder above the drum a typeholder below the drum, distributing mechixiismcontrolling the transfer of type from the upper .typeholder to the drum,- assemblage mechanism controlling the transfer of type from type.

105. The combination of a supply member having a series of parallel type channels. adapted to hold type having beveled feet, a
