Be it known that I, ALoNzo G. Dnonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orangeville, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type Setting and Distributing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to those type setting and distributing machines which are designed for use in connection with machines for producing multicopy letters and the like. There is a ma chine of this class in which the lines of type are set up in individual holders or sticks. These individual sticks are clamped in a chase and the latter placed in the machine. After the type are finished with in the set up form, it is desirable to distribute them into a suitable magazine where they may stay until again required to be set up. It
therefore becomes important to have some ellicient means for quickly setting these type up in the individual sticks and then selectively distributing the type from the sticks into the magazine.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide such means, though it shouldbe understood that the invention herein claimed is not to be limited to use with any special kind of copying machine.

The machine herein shown comprises, among other parts, a suitable rectangular frame having end pieces 1 and 2 joined top and bottom by longitudinal cross bars 3 and i, the whole being preferably one metal casting. This type also has a beveled face 12, the purpose of which will hereinafter more fully appear. These type are adapted to slide into the channels 6, with the upper flanges of the I-bars of the magazine engaging the slots 9 of the type, there being left sufiicient clearance between the bottom of the type and the bottom of the magazine channels to allow the type to slide freely in said channels. When in the magazine channels 6, the beveled face of one type is adjacent the flat face of the next type, with the beveled faces always upward, as shown most clearly in Figs 3 and 4. The frame of this magazine is mounted upon suitable legs 13 at each end thereof, supporting the magazine in an inclined position of about 45 to a horizontal plane, or at any other angle which will permit of the proper gravltation of the type. (See Fig. 2).
The magazine bars 5 are somewhatlonger than the transverse width of their supporting frame, so that at each end they project a short distance over the edges of the side bars 3 and 4', as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. Each of these gates 14 forms a right .angle offset at the upper end of a flat bar 15. For each ofthese bars, there is a slot 16 (see Fig. 20) in the end of each magazine bar, and a correspondingly alined slot 17 in the bottolm n each of theseslots 161 7 one of said bars 15 is mounted for movement at right angles to the magazine bars, the bars being held against movement, except in the direction stated, by means of small rods 18 and 19, extending longitudinallyof the frame 4, and through slots 20 and 21 in the bars 15 (see Fig. 4), the said rcdslying respectively in grooves 22 and23, in the machine frame, as shown in Fig. 12. Each of the gate bars 15 is provided with a rear off-set or heel 24,
near its bottom, and each of these is engaged by a member 25 of a spring 26 (Fig. 5) made fast to the machine frame as shown. Any vertical movement of the bars 15, therefore, is against the tension of one of these "spring members, which returns the bar to normal. Each bar 1.5 carries, in addition to the type retaining gate 14, an extractor 27 by'which the type are picked out, one at a time, from the magazine type channels and started on their way into the type sticks into which they are to be set. Each of these extractors comprises preferably an integral part of its supporting bar 15. and consists,
in the caseshown, of a fiat tooth off-set to one sideof the bar 15, having its flat side parallelto those of the bars, and beveled very slightlyas at28 on one edge, but provided with an extended bevel or cam face This extractor is offset to one side of its bar 15, a suflicient dis tance to be in alinement with the next adjacent magazine type channel on the left, Figs.

Upward movement ofthe extractor and gate bars 15 is effected by means of an actuator 30 which consists of a flat lever arm, one end of which is provided with a nose 31,
adapted to engage the under side of a lug 32 formed'on the front edge of the gate bars 15. This actuator is made .fast as by a pin 33, to one end of a collar 34, mounted to slide longitudinally on a shaft 35. The said collar while freely slidable longitudinally on said shaft, is held against rotation relative thereto bya pin 36 carried bysaid collar and engaging .a longitudinal slot 37 :in the said shaft. The actuator 30 is carried on the shaft 35 between one end of the'collar 34 and one end of a second collar 38, also mounted to slide onsaid shaft longitudinally thereof, and both such collars are held between two yoke arms 39 and 40 of the selector car- The arms 39 and 40 are provided with openings 41 and 42 said shaft fitting these openings loosely enough ria ge. respectively to permit the carriage to slide freely, longitudinally of the shaft. This selectorcarriage comprises in addition tosaid yoke arms (see Figs. 15, l-Sand 17 for details) an elongated body portion 43 in which is formed a longitudinal slot 43 open at both ends. In the forward end of this slot, that is, the end nearest the type magazine is mounted -a type receiving mouth piece, which. comprises a flat rectangular block 44 (see Figs. 4, 18 and 19) having atypechannel 45 extending longitudinally thereof and opening through its upper edge, whereby there are-formed @two opposite flanges 46 and 47, which engage the slots on the opposite sidesof the type. The side walls and flanges of this type channel at one end extend beyond one edge of the block, so as to form a mouth piece 48, which projects beyond the end of the carriage body, the outer end of the mouth piece lying close to ends of the magazine channel bars, but far enough away so as to allow free movement of said mouth piece'past the ends of said bars. The upper edges of thismouth piece are beveled, as at 49, so as .to insure ready movement of the type, from the magazine into said mouth piece. Springs 50 and 51, made fast to the mouth piece block 44 are for the purpose of engagement with the type stick, as hereinafter more particularly described.
The body of the typesetter carriage has a downward extension 52, which is provided This slot 54 receives an oifset or flange 56 located on the lower front edge of the cross bar 4 of the machine frame and extending the entire length of said bar. The vertical slot receives the actuator 30 when the latter is moved upward, as hereinafter described.
The forwardly projecting flange 55 of the cross bar '1, is provided with a series of vertical slots 57, which coincide with and open into slots 17 in which the type extractor bars more. The lower forward edges of each of the walls of these slots 57 is beveled as at These slots 57 act as guide ways for the actuator inpassing into engagement with the extractor lugs 32, and are beveled as shown, so as to guide the actuator into the body of the seat proper, in case the actuator when operated, should not be in exact alinement with the center of the slot.
It is a great advantage in this class of machines, not to have to stop the selector carriage exactly in a given position with respect to its type magazine each time, in 0rder to pickcut a type. In other words, for rapid operation, it is a distinct advantage to provide means which will take care of the lack of accuracy on the part of the operator in stopping the selector in any selecting position. Attempts have been made to meet this requirement by providing a series of locating slots with beveled entrance edges, so that the locator engaging said edges is cammed or forced into the slots. If such an arrangement be used in connection with a selecting carriage, supported by means of a sliding collar on a shaft, without making provision for the carriage to yield laterally, the pressure of the locator, against the slanting side walls of the guide slot would pro duce such binding of the carriage on the shaft that the carriage would not adjust itselflaterally of the shaft so as to permit the actuator to slide into its proper slot. This apparently small detail in construction has given great trouble in thisclass of devices, and has resulted in the use in other machines, of more or less complex carriage mounting. The solution of this difficulty is provided for in the present invention, by simply mounting the shaft on which the carriage slides, so as to yield in either direction longitudinally. For this purpose the shaft 35 is loosely journaled at both ends, so as to be longitudinally mov'ableas well as rotatable. The shaft is thus supported at each end in supporting bars 59 and 60, made fast to the end frames the machine. The ends of said shaft, journaled in said bars is reduced in diameter as at 61 and '62 and extends through the supporting bars 59 and (30, as shown. Mounted on the reduced portions 61 and 62 of said shaft, between the shoulders formed where the reduced portions 61 and 62 commence, and the supporting bars 59 and 60, are two pairof telescoped cups 63-434: and 65-66, in which are mounted coil springs 67 and 68. It will therefore be seen that the carriage shaft is yieldable in either direction against the com- I pression of either one of said springs. This allows the shaft 35 and the whole selector carriage to move bodily laterally so as to allow the actuator 30 to accommodate itself to the intended slot as hereinafter more par ticularly described. This actuator is operated by the rotation of the shaft 35, by means of a key lever 69 made fast to one end of said shaft, outside of one end of the machine frame. This operation of the actuator is effected against the tension of the coil spring 70, attached to said key and to the machine frame. By means of this spring, the actuator is always returned after operation to its normal position, clear of the flange 56, so as to permit of the lateral movement of the selector carriage. A stop 71 limits the movement of the key 69 in the direction of the pull of its spring.
Reverting to the selector carriage, this is provided in addition to the parts heretofore mentioned, with two uprights 72 and 73 on the upper ends of which is mounted an index pointer 74, which is adapted to travel over an index scale 75, extending trans versely across the type magazine and over the tops of the channel bars 5 and supported at each end on the machine frame as shown. This index scale carries on its upper face, letter and number characters and symbols, located respectively above the type channels of the magazine which carry the type corresponding to these characters or symbols.
A type stick of the kind herein referred to, is shown in detail in Figs. 23 and These sticks consist each of elongated metal bar having a type channel 76 extend ing longitudinally of the bar and opening through a slot in theupper edge thereof,
so as to form two oppositely projecting fianges 77 and 78, which engage the slots in the little neck type, and support the same as shown most clearly in Fig. 23. Each of these sticks is provided on opposite sides with longitudinal grooves 79 and 80, which act primarily as guides for the springs 50 and 51 of the selector mouth piece. So far as the use or function of these side slots is concerned, they need extend only but a short distance from the ends of the type stick, but in making these sticks, which is preferably done by drawing, it is easier to draw the slots the entire length of the stick than only a portion of the length thereof. In the actual manufacture, these sticks are preferably drawn in longitudinal halves, as snown in Fig. 93, and then secured together by riveting or in any other suitable way. For the purpose in the selector carriage, the latter is provided with a spring 81, made fast to one side thereof and provided with a lug 82, which extends through, an opening 83 in one side of the carriage body into the type stick receiving slot at. V
The operation of the typesetter portlon of the machine is'as follows: One of the type sticks is placed in the slot 44 of the selector carriage, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and i, the type stick making a snug fit with "said slot. In this position, the type channel of the se lector mouth piece and the type channel of the type stick are in exact alinement, the guide springs 50 and 51 on the mouth piece block engaging the side slots 79 and 80 in the type stick. The selector carriage is then slid longitudinally of the shaft 35 until the pointer 74 registers with the character on the scale 75, corresponding to the'type to be selected. The carriage is then stopped in this position, and thekey' lever 69 operated against the. tension of its spring. This throws the actuator 30' upward, and if it happens to be in exact alinement with the proper slot 57, its nose will. pass unimpeded into said slot and into engagement with lug 32 of the extractor bar 1.5 of the row of type I selected. Thiscxtractor bar will then rise and carry with it the tooth shaped extractor 27 and also the type gate 14. When this type gate has risen sufiiciently to clear the top of" the type, the camportion of the extractor begins to engage the bevel face of the type which had previously rested against the gate, giving the type a start downward and causing it to pass out of the end of the magazine channel, into the mouth piece of the selector carriage, and thence into the type stick. It will be seen that as the ex tractor passes upward its upperfiat face engages one side of the last type in the row operated on, and thus holds this row of type in position. Directly after the key lever 69 is operated to eject a type, it is released. its spring 70 then returns the key, shaft 35 and actuator 30 to normal, when the extractor bar 15 also'returns to normal underthe action of its spring 25. When the extractor thus returns to its normal position, it passes downward out of engagementwith the row of type which it had previously supported, but when this happens, the type gate 14 is down in position to receive the row of type and support them, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. 7
The extreme simplicity of the mechanism herein provided for performing the several acts of alternately supporting and ejecting the type, is one of the chief advantages of this machine. Should the actuator 30, which may also be termed a locator, not be 7 stopped exactly opposite the slot into which it is intended to pass, it will engage the beveled portion 58 of the mouth of said slot and channel of the stick as shown in Fig. 4.
These clips are well known in the art and therefore need no further description here.
The type distributing mechanism com-v prises among other parts, a carriage very similar to theselecting carriage of the setting mechanism. This distributing carriage comprises, among other parts, an elongated body portion 85, longitudinally slottedas at 86 (see Fig. 13) to receive one of the type sticks inthe same manner as described with reference to the setting carriage. This distributer carriage is also provided with a fixed mouth piece 87, which is a duplicate of the mouthpiece of'the selector carriage, except that the mouth piece 8'? is not provided with the beveled portions, 4-9 of the selector mouth piece. is provided with guide springs 88 and 89, which engage the side grooves in the type stick, as in the case of the setting or selecting mechanism. The distributer carriage also has secured to one side thereof a spring 90 which carries a retaining lug 91, extending through the side ofthe carriage body for engagement with the side ofthe type stick when the latter is in thecarriage, also as de 'in connection with. the setting or selector mechanism. The openings 94 and 95 in the yoke of the selector carriage make an easy sliding fit with the shaft 96, so as to permit the carriage to be readily shifted longitudinally of said shaft.
The distributer mechanism differs principally from that of the selecting or setting mechanism in that in the latter mechanism there is an extractor and movable type gate individual to each magazine type channel, and the carriage into which the type are fed, carries an actuator common to all or any of said extractors, whereas in the distributer mechanism there is but one type gate 7 and extractor, and these are carried by the distributing carriage. This distributer type gate and extractor comprises an elongated This distributer mouth piece bar 103, ofiset type gate 104:, andbeveled or cammed pointed extractor 105, all of substantiallythe same construction as parts 14, 15 and 27 of the setting mechanism, except that the heel piece 24 of the latter mechanism is omitted from the selector bar 103. This selector extractor bar 103 is located in a slot 106 in the forward end ofthe selector carriage and is retained in said slot by pins 107 and 108 which extend through slots 109 and 110 respectively in said bar. The extractor proper 105 is off-set to one side of the bar 103 such a distance as to be in direct vertical alinement with the slot or type channel of the selector carriage mouth piece. The positions of thetype gate 101 and extractor 105 relative to the type when the gate 10-1 is down in the normal position of rest are shown most clearly in Fig. 3. The selector bar 103 is raised and lowered by means of an actuator comprising a lever arm 111, made fast as by pin 112 (see Fig. 8) to a central shoulder 113 on a collar 114, mounted to slide on shaft 96, but prevented from turning thereon by a pin 115, on said collar, engaging a longitudinal slot or way 116 in said shaft. The collar 11& fits between the yoke arms 92 and 93 of the selector carriage, as shown. The operative connection of the actuator lever 111 with the extractor bar is effected by the engagement of a lug 117 on the forward edge of said bar engaging in a slot 118, passing between two offset fingers 119 and 120 on the outer end of lever 111. In the selector or setting mechanism, the extractor actuator also fulfils the function of locator for the carriage. The distributer carriage, however, is provided with an individual locator which is a separate part from the actuator. This distributor locator, as shown, is a duplicate of the actuator and locator of the selector carriage, comprising a flat lever a-rm 121, one end of which slips over collar 11a and is made fast to the shoulder 113 thereof as by pin 122, or in any other way. The shaft 96 is operated by means of a key lever 123 made fast to one end of said shaft and normally held in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by means of a coil spring .121 secured at one end to said lever arm and at the other to the side bar 60 of the machine. Movement of this key lever in the direction of the pull of said spring is limited by pins 107 and 108 and by the upper edge of the mouth piece 87 (see Fig. 3), since these parts limit the downward movement of the selector bar 103 which is connected to the actuator lever arm 111, which latter is rigidly connected to the shaft 96.
Cooperating with the locator 121 to bring the carriage into alinement and hold it there during operation, are a series of slots 126 (see Fig. 10) formed in the flange 127 on the lower outer edge of the upper cross bar 3 of the machine frame. These slots perform identically the same function as slots 57 on the other cross bar 1, and for the same purpose are provided with beveled entrances 128 for the entrance of the nose of the locator. An index pointer 130 made fast to purpose of this distributing mechanism as hereinbefore pointed out, is to distribute the type already set up in the type sticks, back into their proper magazine channels. In the operation of this mechanism, one of these type sticks is placed in the distributer carriage as shown, when the type slide down into the distributer mouth piece and rest against the type gate, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, the beveled face of the type all pointing in one direction as shown. The type carriage is then slid along the shaft 96 until the pointer 130 arrives substantially in line with the character on the scale 133, corresponding to the type to be fed into the magazine. The key lever 123 is then operated against the tension of its spring, whereby the shaft 96 is rotated in such direction as to send the outer ends of the actuator 111 and the locator 121 upward. If the locator is then directly opposite one of the slots 126, it will pass unimpeded into this slot, and the actuator will lift the extractor bar 103, raising the type gate 101 and the extractor 105. When said type gate has cleared the top of the type, the pointed end of the extractor will pass into the space between the type directly thereabove and give the lowermost type a start downward, the straight edge of the extractor engaging the flat face of the type neXt to the one ejected and thereby retaining the line of type in the selector mouth piece and type stick. 0n the release of the lever 123, the shaft 96 returns to normal, drawing the ends of the actuator and locator downward, thereby returning the extractor and type gate to their normal positions, as shown in Fig. 1f the locator 121 is not stopped directly in line with one of the slots 126, its
nose 129 engages one of the beveled sides 128 of the slot, causing the locator to force the shaft 96 laterally, whereby the selector carriage is adjusted to such position as to allow the locator to pass on upward into its slot, thereby bringing the mouth piece of the carriage lnto proper alinement with the desired magazine type channel. Of-course, it
mustbe understood that where this lateral adjustment of the carriage is very slight, the carriage itself will sometimes slide sufficiently on the shaft to properly adjust itself.
At one end of the machine frame, Figs. 1
and 2, will be seen two type sticks 7 6 and '76, secured to the side of the machine frame by a set screw 136. These sticks are used for making corrections in cases of error in setting up type in the regular type sticks. For example, if a line of type is set up in a stick with a misspelled word therein, the end of this type stick is placed against the end of one of the correction sticks,so that the type channels will be in alinement. The type are then slid out of the regular stick into the correction stick, up to the point where the error has occurred. The misset type is'then properly placed in the regular stick and the remaining portion of the line in the correction stick is then slid back into the regular stick. The correction type sticks are or may be exact duplicates of the regular type sticks, except that the correction sticks are provided at one end with guide springs 137 for engagement with the side: channels 80 in the regular type sticks. This correction attachment obviously may or may not be used in connection with this machine as desired.
While I have herein shown and described one specific embodiment of my said invention, it should be understood that the same is susceptible to many constructional modifications, which may be made without departing from the true spirit of the invention.

1. The combination with a type magazine, having a series of type channels, of a type holder movable transversely of said type channels to be brought into alinement therewith, and resilient means adapted to yield to the movement of said holder in coming 7 into alinement with said channels, in two opposite directions.
2. The combination With a type magazine, havingv a series of open end type channels, of a type holder carriage, a movable support on which said carriage is mounted to travel transversely of said channels, and yielding means normally exerting pressure against said support in two opposite directions of the carriage travel.
3. The combination with a type magazine, having a plurality of type channels, of a type transferring carriage movable transversely of said channels, a longitudinally movable shaft on which said carriage is slidably mounted, and resilient means resisting. the longitudinal movement of said shaft.
4. type in said channel, an extractor adapted to pass into the interstice between the lowermost type in said channel and the next adjacent type, a movable support common to the extractor and gate of each said type channel, the movement of said support in one direction simultaneously lifting its type gate clear of the type and sending its extractor into the said interstice, whereby the lowermost type is ejected from said holder and the remaining type in the channel sustained therein by said extractor.
9. The combination with a type holder having a type channel in which loose type may gravitate, a bar movable transversely of said channel, a type gate carried by said bar and normally sustaining said type in said channel, an extractor also carried by said bar and adapted to pass into the interstice between the lowermost type in said channel and the next adjacent type, the said gate and extractor forming rigid portions of said bar, and means to impart movement to said bar transversely of said type channel, the movement of said bar in one direction lifting its gate clear of the type in said channel and sending said extractor into said interstice, whereby the lowermost type is ejected from said channel and the remaining type therein sustained by said ejector.
10. The combination with an inclined type magazine having a plurality of type channels, carrying loose type and in which said type may gravitate, of a movable type gate individual to each such type channel and normally sustaining the type in said channels, an extractor also individual to each of said type channels and adapted to pass into the interstice between the lowermost type in its channel and the next adjacent type, a separate movable support common to the extractor and gate of each said type channel the movement of any of said supports in one direction simultaneously lifting its type gate clear of the type and sending its extractor into the said interstice, whereby the lowermost type is ejected from said magazine and the remaining type in the channel sustained in said magazine by said extractor.
11. The combination with an inclined type magazine having a plurality of type channels, carrying loose type and in which said type may gravitate, of a movable type gate individual to each such type channel and normally sustaining the type in said channels, an extractor also individual to each of said type channels and adapted to pass into the interstice between the lowermost type in its channel and the next adjacent type, a separate movable support common to the extractor and gate of each said type channel, the movement of any of said supports in one direction simultaneously lifting its type gate clear of the type and sending its extractor into the said interstice, whereby the lowermost type is ejected from said magazine and the remaining type in the channel sustained in said magazine by said extractor, a type holder movable transversely of said magazine, channels and adapted to receive the type ejected therefrom, a rotatable shaft on which said holder is longitudinally mo "able and an actuator angular-1y movable by said shaft to operate any of the said extractors and type gates by moving the said common support of each.
12. The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of open end type channels adapted to receive type through said open ends and in which channels said type are adapted to gravitate, of a type holder movable, transversely of said type channels and provided with a channel in which loose type may gravitate toward said magazine channels, a type gate movable with, and transversely to said type holder and normally sustaining the type therein, an extractor also movable with and transversely to said holder and adapted to pass into the interstice between the lowermost type in the holder channel and the next adjacent type, a movable support common to said extractor and gate, the movement of said support in one direction simultaneously lifting its type gate clear of the type and sending its extractor into the said interstice, whereby the lowermost type is ejected from said holder and the remaining type in the holder sustained therein by said extractor.
13. The combination with an inclined type magazine having a plurality of open end type channels adaptedto receive type through said open ends and in which channels said type are adapted to gravitate, of a type holder movable transversely of said type channels and provided with a channel in which loose type may gravitate toward said magazine channels, a movable type gate movable with and transversely to said type holder and normally sustaining the type therein, an extractor also movable with and transversely to said holder and adapted to pass into the interstice between the lowermost type in the holder channel and the next adjacent type, a movable support common to said extractor and gate, the movement of said support in one direction simultaneouslylifting its type gate clear of the type and sending its extractor into the said interstice, whereby the lowermost type is ejected from said holder and the remaining type in the holder sustained therein by said extractor, a rotatable shaft on which said holder is longitudinally movable, an actuator angularly movable by said shaft, and operatively connected to said type gate and extractor support.
14. The combination with atype magazine having a plurality of type channels, a type holder movable transversely of said channels, a carriage carrying said type holder, a movable type gate for normally retaining said type in said holder, an extractor for ejecting said type from said holder into said magazine, a movable member mounted in said carriageand carrying said gate and extractor, and means to operate said member whereby said gate and extractor are simultaneously operated.
15. A movable type carrying carriage provided with a type channel, a type holder removably mounted in said carriage and carrying a line of loose type adapted to gravitate from said holder into said channel, a movable type gate normally sustaining said type in said channel, an extractor below said type and movable to separate the type ad jacent said gate from the others in line therewith, and means to simultaneously lift said gate from the path of said type and operate said extractor. I
16. The combination with a type holder adapted to contain a line of individual type mounted to slide therein, of a combined type gate and extractor comprising a flat metal bar having an offset portion against which said line of type normally rest and a pointed member forming an extension on said bar below said type gate, means to impart movement to said bar transversely of said line of type to raise said gate clearof said type and send said pointed member into the interstice between the type adjacent said gate and the next type thereto, the said bar, gate and pointed member comprising one integral structure.
17. The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels, means to normally sustain said type in said channels, a type extractor individual to each of said channels, a type holder movable transversely of said channels and into which said type are transferred from said channels by said extractors, a shaft extending transversely of said magazine channels and on which said'type holder is mounted to travel,
and means operated by saidshaft to operate said type extractors.
18. The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of open end type channels lying in a common plane, means to normally sustain said type in said channels against gravity,a type, extractor individual,
to each of said channels, a type holder movable transversely of said channels andv into which said type are transferred from the openends of said channels by said extractors, a shaft extending transversely of said magazine channels and on which said type holder is mounted to travel, and means operated by said shaft to operate said type extractors.
19. The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels each adapted to contain a line of loose type, of a type gate individual to each of said channels normally sustaining the type therein, a I
type extractor also individual toeach of said channels, and mechanism common to all said gates and extractors to operate the same selectively.

The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels each adapted to contain a line of loose type located therein, of a type gate individual to each of said channels normally sustaining the type therein against gravity, a type extractor individual to each of said channels, and mechanism to operate the gate and extractor of the respective type channels simultaneously.

The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels each adapted to contain a line of loose type located therein for gravitating movement, of a type gate individual to each of said channels normally sustaining the type therein adapted to contain a line of loose type 10- cated therein for gravitating movement, of a type gate individual to each of said channels normally sustaining the type therein' against gravity, an extractor individual to each of'said channels adapted to enter the interstices'between the lowermost type of each channel and the next adjacent type from below, an actuator common to all said gates and extractors and selectively movable transversely of saidchannels, and means operated by said actuator to lift any one of saidfigates clear of its type and simultaneously operate its extractor.
123, The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of openrend type channels lying in a common plane, and each vadapted to carry a line of loose type adapted to gravitate therein, atype gate individual to each of said channels and acting to normally sustain the type" therein, a type extractor also individual to each of said channels, an actuator common to all said gates and extractors and movable transversely of said magazine to be brought into operative connection with anyof said gates and extractors, a shaft extending transversely of said type channels and connected to said actuator for imparting angular movement thereto to operate said gates and extractors, and on which shaft said actuator is mounted for said movement transversely of said type channels.

The combination with a type maga-' zine having a plurality of open end type channels, a type holder movable transversely ofthe ends of said channels, means to transfer said type from said holder to said channels also movable transversely thereof, and a shaftv extending transversely of said channels and on which said type holder and transferring means are mounted to travel, and means operated by said shaft to operate said type transferring means.

The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of open end type channels, each adapted .to carry a line of loose type, a type holder having a channel adapted to contain a line, of loose type and movable transversely of the ends of said magazine channels, a" type gate normally sustaining said type in said holder, an ejector operating on the release of said gate to start the lowermost type in the holder into motion toward a selected magazine channel, a carriage adapted to travel transversely of said magazine and carrying said holder, gate and extractor, a shaft on which said carriage travels, and means operated by said ,shaft to operate said type gate and extractor.

The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels adapted to contain each a line of loose type, a type holder movable transversely of said channels, a shaft on which said type holder is mounted to travel, and mechanism operated by said shaft to transfer the type from said holder to said magazine.
27. The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of'type channels adapted to contain each a line of loose type, a type holder movable transversely of said channels, a shaft on which said type holder is mounted to travel, mechanism operated by said shaft to transfer the type from said holder to said magazine, and a lever located at one end of the machine to operate said shaft.

The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels adapted to contain each a line of loose type, a type holder movable transversely of said channels, a shaft on which said type holder is mounted to travel, and mechanism operated by said shaft to transfer the type from said magazine to said holder.

The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels adapted to contain each a line of loose type, a type holder'movable transversely of said channels, a shaft on which said type holder is mounted to travel, mechanism operated by said shaft to transfer the type from said magazine to said holder, and a lever located at one end of the machine to operate said shaft.

The combination with a type magazine having a plurality of type channels adapted to contain each a line of loose type, a type holder movable transversely of said channels, a shaft on which said type holder is mounted to travel, a type extractor individual to each of said channels to transfer the type from said channels to said holder, an actuating lever arm mounted to travel on said shaft longitudinally thereof, but connected to said shaft for angular movement thereby to operate any of said extractors, a
rigid bar having a series of flared grooves one for each of said channels, the said actuator entering one of these grooves each time it operates an extractor, and the said type holder being connected to said actuator against movement relative thereto transversely of the type magazine.

The combination with type holding means having a type channel adapted to contain a line of loose type, a movable type gate against which the lowermost type in a line is adapted to normally rest and adapted to move transversely of said line of type, a type sustaining member operating from the opposite side of the line of type from said gate, normally out of engagement with said type and movable into engagement with the next'lowermost type in the line, a movable supporting member on which both said type gate and sustaining member are mounted, and mechanism to operate said supporting member to lift said gate from the path of the lowermost type and send said sustaining member into engagement with the next lowermost type to retain the latter and the other type against movement downward until said gate has returned to the path of the type.
32. The combination with type holding means having a type channel adapted to contain a line of loose type, a movable type gate against which the lowermost type in a line is adapted to normally rest and adapted to move transversely of said line of type, a type sustaining member operating from the opposite side of the line of type from said gate, normally out of engagement with said type and movable into engagement with the next lowermost type in the line, a movable supporting member on which both said type gate and sustaining member are mounted, a rotary shaft extending transversely of the line of type, and an actuator movable transversely of said shaft and operable by the rotation thereof to operate said supporting member to lift said gate from the path of the lowermost type and send said sustaining member into engagement with the next lowermost type to retain the latter and the other type against movement downward until said gate has returned to the path of the type.
