TYPE-COMPOSING E/IACHINE.
weenie.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVALTnR CHIPBERFIELD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, re.- siding at Kinkora, Great Nelmes, Hornchurch, Essex, England, have invented certain new and useful lmprovementsin Type- Composing Machines, of whichthe fo1lowing is a specification.
My invention relates. to a 'machine 1n which a type font is employed, comprising a frame about which a plurality of type troughs are arranged, in whichthe Various desired types are contained. In accordance with the present invention a detachable composing stick is carried by a mechanism which is so arranged that the manualoperation of selective devices such as the keys of a keyboard mechanism will serve to'aline the comype troughs. When the composingstick is has alined another manually operated mechanism'is brought into play, such as one comprising a presser bar and mechanism operated thereby, which results in the bottom type contained in the selected type trough, falling into the composing stick. When the composing stick has been filled with the various'selected types, the same is removed from its carrying mechanism and an empty composing stick substituted.
In the operation of mechanism of the character referred to it is necessary that the bottom type in each type trough normallybe retained in position, and that theretaining means for the bottom type of any type trough be removed from operative position and the nextuppermost type be retained in position when the bottom type is to be ale lowed to pass into the composing stick from type trough which is in alinement with the composing stick at any moment. Appropriate mechanism of this character is provided by my invention. Preferably a pair of levers are mounted. on or adjacent to each type trough. stick has been alined with any type trough lever, in the preferred form of myinvention, is carried by the framewhich carries the composing stick, into position to operate the levers which appertain to the particular type trough. The operation of a presser bar or other manual means is then caused to operate the lever which has been adjusted Specification of Letters Patent.

)osing stick with any desired one of the When the composing with the composing stick, the operation of:- this lever serving to operate one of the type trough levers to release the bottomtype and to operate the other lever to grip the next, uppermost type.
'My invention consists in improved mecha parts of the,
nisms; and combinations of character above referred to.
In order that my invention may be more fully understood attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating one form of my invention. In the drawings Figure 1 represents partly in side elevation and partly in section, so much of a manually operated type composing machine, embodying'my invention, as will be necessary for the purpose or" this specification; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view partly in sideelevation and partly in sectlon of the part of the mechanism by rarest eerie-s.

which the delivery of: the type tromthetype storage troughs is controlled; Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section showlng one of the type storage troughs with the'type in= position; Fig. 4.- is a similar section taken through the composing stick and Fig. 5 isa view similartoFig. .Zbut showing a modified construction of the mechanism there illustrated. 1
Referring more particularly to Figs; 1 to e of the-drawings, the machine comprises a base plate 1 from which, any convenient number of standards 2'proceed to support a font 3 at a'convenlent distance above the base plate 1. lhe font 3 comprises a frame- 5, which troughs in horizontal section may.
be of the construction shown at Fig. 8, and
within each of these troughs is a store of type, such as the type shown at 6, Fig. 3, which are prevented leaving the base of'the troughs and the. delivery of which therefrom is controlled by mechanism hereafter described.
A. composing stick 7 Fig. 1, of .a suitable character is employed, that is, the composing stick is formed with a lengthwise extending dovetail channel such as is shown in the horizontal enlarged section of the com; posmgstick at Fig. .4, and is adapted to receive type 6 from any one of the storage troughs 5. Such a composing stick 7 is carried from a vertical revoluble shaft 8 by a radial frame 9 in an inclined position corresponding to the inclination of the troughs 5, so that the upper receiving end of the composing stick 7 can be traveled by the angular motion of the shaft 8 below the lower ends of the series of type-containing troughs mounted upon the periphery of the stationar type font 3.
echanism is provided whereby when the composing stick 7 has been angularly moved to position beneath the desired type'trough 5 of the font 3, the operator by the operation of a presser bar or the like, can actuate mechanism connected with that particular trough of the font, by which the type next above the lowermost type is held in position, while the lowermost type is simultaneously released and allowed to fall into the trough of the composing stick.
In order to operate the shaft 8 carrying the composing stick 7, the said shaft is near its lower end fitted with a gear wheel 10, gearing into the teeth of a segmental rack 11 carried from a lower horizontal shaft 12, which segmental rack 11 may be formed with a disk 13 concentric with the said horizontal shaft 12 and free to revolve thereon.
It will now be understood that if a definite angular rotary movement is given to the disk 13 with its segmental rack 11, a proportional angular rotary movement will be given to the radial frame ll fixed on the vertical shaft 8 and to the composing stick 7 carried thereby, which will bring the upper end of the latter beneath a particular trough 5 of the type font 3.
In order to enable the composing stick7 to be mechanically brought beneath a trough 5 of the font 3 containing the particular letter or figure required, the ma chine is shown as fitted with mechanism of the'following character.
Upon the horizontal shaft 12 which is carried from the bed plate 1 of the machine and which freely supports the segmental rack 11 and disk 13 aforesaid, there also freely and independently mounted two platforms 15, 16, one extending upon one side of the shaft 12 and the other upon the opposite side, said platforms 15, 16 being supported in their normal positions as shown, by counterweights, springs or the like against suitable stops, not necessary to illustrate in the drawings, and it will therefore be sufficient, since the platforms 15, 16,v
and their coacting parts are similar, to describe one of the platforms and its parts.
The platform 15, carries a two-armed pawl lever 17, one arm, the lower arm for instance, having a tooth which by the rocking of the pawl lever 17 can enter a notch 18 in the edge'of the disk 13 carrying the toothed segment 11, but when the platform is in its normal and inactive position an arm of the pawl lever 17 contacts with a stationary stop indicated at 19 which holds the pawl lever 17 away from engagement with the disk 13; when l'iowever the platform is depressed the pawl lever 1'? is taken away from the stop 19 and immediately becomes engaged by spring action with the disk 13 and consequently any further down ward movement of the platform 15 will rock the disk 13 on its axis and give an angular rotary movement of adjustment to the radial frame 14; and to the composing stick 7 in accordance with the distance through which the platform 15 is rocked. The mechanism is arranged so that one'of the platforms is adapted to move the composing stick 7 through an arc'oftravel up to 180, while the opposite platform can give the composing stick an arc of travel adopted. A stationary frame 20 is shown at Fig. 1 carried from the base plate 1 and located above the platforms 15, 16, and this frame 20 carries two sets of type keys 21 and '22, one set 21 acting on the-platform 15 and the otherset -22 upon the other plat form 16, each key representing a letter or figure, and each key corresponding in fact to a trough of the type font. Eachkey is constructed with a head such as 23 upon which the operator presses, and the head 23 is carried. upon a vertical stein slidable in a guide in the stationary frame 20, and the distance through which eachkey can be depressed is definitely limited (as by collars 241 for instance), the distance of travel-pos sible for one key varying from tr e distance of travel of another key, and so on.
The lower of the stems of the keys,
considering one set, rest upon that platform which is immediately below that set of keys. By this arrangement, when a key is de pressed through its limit distance it will depress the platform and rock the latt aboutthe horizontal shaft 12 through a doth nite angle, and consequently the disk 3- carrying the segn'iental rack 11 will likewise be moved through a definite rotary angle, and the gearing '10, 11 is so proportioned that the composing stick 7 will be "carried around to beneath the lower end of a trough 5 of the composing font 3 containing the letter or figure which corresponds with tha to which the particular key depressed is allocated. 7
The lowermost type of the particular trough 5 beneath which the composing stick 7 thus becomeslocated is released by means hereafter described, actuated by the operator, and the type so released passes into the composing stick 7, and upon the operator removing pressure from the key operated, the platform will immediately assume its normal position by any conveniently arranged springs or balance weights (not shown) as also will the composing stick 7, and the machine is in a position for the operation of the next key, and so on.
The mechanism according tothis invention for effectingthe release of the lowermost type of a font trough 5 and the retaining therein of the type above the lowermost type, in order to permit the lowermost type to pass from the font trough 5 to the composing stick 7, and at the same time to insure that the composing stick shall register with the particular font trough 5 and shall bemaintained in that position during the passage of the lowermost type from the font trough to the composing.
stick, will now be described with particular,
v reference to Figs. 1 and 2.
For each trough 5 of the font the conical structure 4 carries a two-armed lever 25, termed the first lever which is pivoted at 26 to the framework 4. of the'font; one arm of the first lever25 carries a tooth 27 which extends below the lower end of the trough 5 and normally prevents the lowermost type leaving the same. v
Pivoted to the saidtoothed arm of the first lever 25 is a second single-armed lever 28 wh1ch has a pro ection 29 opposite to the base of that type immediately above the I I consldered apreferableconstruction of the lowermost type, and the second lever 28 ex tends toward the axis of the font and has a curved end; a spring 30'connects that arm of the firstlever 25 not provided with a tooth, with the second lever 28, and the arm of the second lever 28 normally rests against a stop 31 on the font which prevents the second lever 28 being rocked by the spring toward the arm of the first lever 25, and consequently the tooth 27 of the first lever 25 is at the same timeheld beneath the trough 5 by the said spring. It will be understood that both the levers 25 and 28 mentioned are carried'by the font which is stationary.
The vcrtlcal previously described, with a carrier comprising the radial frame 14: into which the com-v posing stick 7 can be quickly inserted so that it is in line with the troughs 5v of the font, and as before explained this vertical shaft 8 is revoluble by means such as have been described.
The radial frame 14 carriedby the vertical shaft 8 supports a two-armed lever 32, one arm of which engages a sliding collar 33 on the vertical shaft 8, which collar 33 is operated, preferably, through a rod 34: in-
revoluble shaft 8 coaxial with the axis of the font is provided, as
the first and second type control levers 25,
28 of the particular trough 5 of the font which is being dealt with, the operating lever 32 of the release device actuated by the sliding of the collar 33 acts upon the second lever 28 of the type control device, and the projection 29 of the second lever 23 immediately grips that type which'is next above the lowermost type, and this action simultaneously causes the first lever 25 torock about its fulcrum and to remove its tooth 27 from below the otherwise open end of that particular trough 5 of the font,'and the lowermosttype immediately slides into the composing stick 7 which is in position beneath it.
The composing sticl '7 having received its supply of type to compose a line, the said stick is then removed from its sup-.- porting devices on the vertical shaft 8. and the line of type carried by said stick T is transferred to thetype carrier as previously described. The stickis'then replaced in its devices for retaining and releasingthe type in the font troughs 5, the similar parts at 5 being lettered to correspond with the parts at Fig. 2, and these parts so similarly figured will consequently not require further description. Instead of the lever 32 directly acting upon the tail ofthe second lever 28 as at F 2, the said lever 32 as at Fig.5 care. ries a sliding plunger 32 to act on the tail of the retaining lever 28.- Beyond this the radial frame 14 is, formed with a pair of teeth 1e at a requisite distance apart, and the tail of the lever 28 is in such a positionvthat when it is acted upon by the plunger 32 it enters between the teeth l4; and positions and retains the radial frame 14 so that the composing stick? registers with. the particular font trough 5 beneath which. it is located i V It should be understood that my invention is not strictly limited to the exact details of construction described but is asbroad-as is indicated by the accompanying claims..;
