UNITED STATES Patented September 8,. PATENT OFFICE.
FERNANDO WINKLER, OF OFFENBACH-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY".
TYPE-DISTRIBUTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,269, dated September 8, 1903. Application filed February 3, 1908. Serial No. 141,765- (N m m T0 ttZZ whom it mayconocrn:
Be it known that I, FERNANDO WINKLER, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Offenbach-on-the-Main, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new Distributing Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to a simple and most reliable type-distributing device which is not actuated by keys and a keyboard, but by a hand-lever guided in a swiveling bearing.
The device serves for receiving the types in galley or other form on a table and for distributing them into the various com partments of a letter-case or a magazine of a typesetting machine, as will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my type-distributing device, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, the upper part being removed. Fig. 4 shows in a front view, on an enlarged scale, parts of the type-feeding and knockingoff mechanism; and Fig. 5 is a plan of the same.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The essential feature of my type-distributing device is a single extensible and movable type-channel which is pivotally connected with the table and with the hand-lever and serves for receiving the type knocked off and conducting the same through the respective stationary channel to the compartment of a letter case or magazine.
The base-plate 1 has several (here four) standards 27 for supporting the table 2, on which the types in galley form are placed between the movable slide 28 and the adjustable guide 29. The table 2 is provided with the parts of a well-known type-feeding and knocking-off mechanism.
Above the front part of the base-plate 1 an index-plate 3 is secured by means of suitable supports. This index-plate 3 has a plurality of conical holes 4 4, the number of which corresponds to that of the dilferent kinds of types to be distributed. The holes 4 4 are arranged radially and concentrically with respect to the vertical axis of a swiveling bearing 5, the pin 5' of which is mounted to turn in a hearing 7, fastened on the base-plate 1.
and useful Type-.
.the hand-lever 6.
A hand-lever 6, provided with a hole 6 for receiving a handle, (not shown,) is employed. Its rear thinner end 6 is arranged to slide longitudinallyin the bearing 5, while the hole of the latter is widened on the front and on the rear, so that the hand-lever 6 can be moved a little vertically. The hand-lever 6 is provided with an indicator 8, terminating in a vertical adjusting-pin 9, which can engage in any of the conical holes 4. For limiting the downward movement of the adjusting-pin 9 in proportion to the varying thickness of the types to be knocked off an adjustable screw 10 is arranged in the lower end of each hole 9 in the index-plate The single extensible and movable typechannel consists of two tubes 11 and 12, sliding one within the other and having ball-like widened ends which respectively embrace the similarly-shaped ends of an outlet 13 beneath the table 2 and of a link part 14, secured in The link part 14 projects a little from the under side of the hand-lever 6 and hollowed to serve as a type collecting and guiding channel.
Immediately beneath the hand-lever 6 a perforated guide-plate 15 is secured above the base-plate 1 by suitable means. The holes 16 of the plate 15 are arranged concentrically and in the same radial vertical plan es as the conical holes 4 of the index-plate 3. The number of the holes 16 is equal to that of the conical holes 4. The holes 16 are so placed that when by means of the hand-lever 6 the adj ustingpin 9 is brought above either hole 4 the lower end of the link part 14 will be immediately above the corresponding hole 16. When the hand lever 6 is depressed, the lower end of the link part 14 will be introduced into the mouth of the channel 17'. The channels 17 lead to the compartments 18 of the lettercase 30 or the magazine of a type-setting machine. 7
From the above explanations it will be evident that the hand-lever can be moved in all directions around the center of the bearing 5 and longitudinally.
On the base-plate 1 are fastened two supports 31 31, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) in which the axle 32 of a bowed bell-crank lever 19 is mounted to rock. Between the two lower short arms of this lever a horizontal rod is secured beneath the hand-lever 6, so that the latter can be moved horizontally. Under the action of the weight of the hand-lever 6 the bowed upper arm of the lever 19 bears against the nose 25 of a lever 24, which is linked to the horizontal knocking-off slide 23. slide 23 is mounted to slide in a suitable guide, Fig. 4, on the under side of the table 2. It is the bell-crank lever 19 which actuates the type-feeding and knocking-off mechanism each time the hand-lever 6 is depressed, when a type will be knocked off into the outlet 13 and fall down the movable channel 11 12 and the stationary channel 17 into the respective compartment 18.
The type-feeding and knocking-off mechanism, shown as having a knocking-01f slide 23 and a line-pusher 34, is well known and need not be described. According to my invention this mechanism is so improved that never more than one type can be knocked off the line at a time, no matter what thickness the type may be. This object is attained by the compulsory movement ofa slide 20,mounted to move in a guide on the line-pusher 34. As is shown at Fig. 4, this slide 20 is provided with a pin 21, projecting downward and engaging in a slot 22 of the knocking-off slide 23. This slot 22 is at the front end parallel to the guide 29, but for the remaining part slanting, Fig. 5.
The type-distributing device is operated as follows: The handle on the front end of the hand-lever 6 is seized with the hand and so moved as to bring the adjusting-pin 9 above the respective conical hole 4, (indicated by the index on the plate 3.) Then the movable type-channel 1]. 12 will have partaken in this of the link part 14 will be above the respective mouth 16 of the channel 17. The handlever 6 is now depressed, so that the mechanism on the table 2 is actuated, and the type knocked off will find an uninterrupted channel from the outlet 13 to the compartment 18. When the hand-lever 6 is depressed, the upper bowed arm of the bell-crank lever 19 will move the knocking-off slide 23 forward through a distance determined by the respec-v tive adjustable screw 10 in the index-plate 3 in proportion to the thickness of the respective type. The knocking-01f slide 23 will therefore also move the slide 20 on the linepusher 29 from left to right through a distance which is equal to the thickness of the type to be knocked off and is determined by the shape of the slot 22. It is obvious that the slide 20 will always be withdrawn only so much as is allowed by the respective adjustable screw 10 to make room for a single type to be knocked off. On releasing the hand-lever 6 it is again raised by a spiral spring 26, acting upon the knocking-01f slide 23, so that the latter and the slide 20 are re turned to their initial positions. The typedistributing device thus affords the advant-age that never can two or more types be knocked off at a time, as is frequently the case with other type-feeding and knocking-0E mechanism.
What I- claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
