Specification of Letters Patent.

- To all whom it may concern ceiving composed lines and making them up;
into a page form.
, My invention is particularly well adapted for short type grooved on its opposite sides;
for example, the type commonly known as multigraph type.
In its preferred form, the machine has a pair of independently movable multi-channeled'typeholders mounted end to end with a transfen channel'between them, and means are provided for installing type lines on one of such holders. In assembling or distributing such type, the holders are properly po= sitioned and a line in one of them is advanced by the operator until the foremost type thereof passes into a receiving channel of the other holder, whereupon such other holder is manipulatedto cut ofi such single type from the advanced line.
To carry out the above type-transferring operation I have provided an abutment so located that the foremost type in the'line of one holder is stopped just a ter entering the other typeholder, and then a movement of the latter typeholder carries such type against a stationary cam which moves it farther into such typeholder. Accordingly,
a line of type may be advanced by one hand of the operator toward the abutment, and
his other hand manipulate the receiving member to properly carry into it the foremost type of such fline. My invention,
' moreover, provides means whereby types of different dimensions running-wise may be assembled. or distributed. by this operation.
Furthermore, my invention provides means for conveniently loading the mult1-chan I neled holder from which the type is thereafter taken one at a time by the mechanism above mentioned. Each of the multi-channeled holders is'made removable. Accordingly, the loading of assembledline's side by side on one member provides an assembled page form which may be removed to a suitable printing machine and there used. My
machine provides for taking a proof of such page form before its removal. When such holder is returned to my machine its type may be conveniently distributed into the other holder. From this other holder they may be taken line by line or the whole holder removed for storage or for further distribution.
My invention comprises the means by.
which I eflfect the above mentioned results, or any of them, as well as the more particular embodiment thereof herein illustrated and hereinafter more fully described.
The invention is shown herein embodied in a machine primarily intended for receiving composed linesof type for making up-a page form and distributing such type after use, though the same mechanism, or similar mechanism, may be used for assem-v bling type into words and phrases.

these plates is mounted a rotatable shaft 15 on which are rigidly secured a pair of wheels, spiders or end. members 16*and 17 which may be connected by longitudinal brace rods 14. On these end members seats a removable segment 18 provided with rails 19 parallel with the axis and having overhanging heads to confine between'them grooved type, substantially as illustrated by T in Figs. 5, 6 and 8. The segmentis shown as, havin internal transverse stilfenin D webs which carry a longitudinal rod 23 on which are mounted ,spring hooks 21 adapted to be sprung into the shaft 15 and thereby hold the segment in place with the bodyof the segment seating on the end members 16 and 17. hereinafter described, may be removed and transferred to a suitable rotary printing machine, and thereafter returned to this inachine .for distribution of the type.

The shaft 15extends through and beyond the frame plate 12. On the left hand side of this plate there isrotatably mounted on the shaft a sleeve 30, which is shown as having bearing bushings 31 and 32. Rigidly secured to the sleeve by set screws 33 are spiders or end members 34 and 35, which carry on their periphery rails 36 of similar cross section and similarly spaced to the rails 19. -The rails, spiders and sleeve constitute a drum which I call the auxiliary drum.

so that normally its inner end extends through the sleeve and bushing 31 into an annular groove a5 in the shaft 15. The hand wheel accordingly may turn the auxiliary drum, but is independent of the position or rotation of the shaft 15. Surrounding the sleeve 30 at the left hand end of the auxiliary drum is a disk e8 which abuts the ends of the rails 36 and forms a stop or closure for the channels between them.

The points of the cam 52- and 53 adjacent to the channel 22 stand beyond the right of the end of the auxiliary drum, while the curves of these cams extend over this drum farther than the left hand face of the abutment or lug 59.
The mechanism described can be best understood by a description of the distributing operation. Assuming that the main drum carries lines of type which it is desired to distribute into the auxiliary drum, the operation is as follows: The drum 18 is turned to bring the line to be distributed into alinement with the channel 22, and locked in this position, and the auxiliary drum turned to bring the proper channel into the same alinement. Then" such line of type is shoved by hand (conveniently by the thumb of the operator) until the left hand end of the line abuts the stop 59. This leaves one type standing in the auxiliary drum. Then the auxiliary drum is turned in one direction or the other and such single type is carried laterally until it engages the curve of the cam 52 or which shoves that type along in the drum to a position where it will be beyond the abutment If the auxiliary drum is designed as a receptacle for distributed type, one channel will be appropriated for each character, and accordingly, the operation of distributing will be to turn the auxiliary drum until the channel thereof corresponding to the foremost character in the line to be distributed is opposite the transfer channel 22. and then to advance theline of type in the main drum through the transfer channel. until the forward end of the line abuts the stop, then turn the auxiliary drum in one direction or the other to cam the end-most type farther into the drum and then to turn the auxiliary drum to position for .i-eceiving the next type, and so on. If desired a suitable indicator may be mounted on the auxiliary drum to indicate which channels are designed for which type, but I find it. convenient to arrange the type in this drum alphabetically, or in other known order, or to leave in the drum a few of the distributed type as aguide in distributing further type.
Fig. 5 shows the word AHEAD in the main drum about to be distributed. The

main drum, again rotating the auxiliary drum, and carrying on this operation alternately until the line is distributed. If, on the other hand, the main drum contained assorted t-ypethat is the type throughout any channel being of the same characterand it were desired to assemble it into words in'a channel on the auxiliary drum, the main drum'would be turned .to bring the first letter into alinement with the transfer channel- 22, and the line advanced to place such type of such channel and the main drum turned to bring the next character into position to be shoved in such channel,
and so on, until the channel is filled and the foremost type stands in the right hand end of the appropriated channel of the auxiliary drum. Then. the latter drum is turned sufiiciently'to cause thecam or to force this type inwardly farther than the stop 59, and then the drum returned for receiving the next character in the same line, which is fed to it by turning the main drum and shoving the selected line of type therein. It will be seen, therefore, that it is possible to assemble, as well as to distribute with this'mechanism, though, in the particular form shown, the mechanism described is adapted primarily for distributing. For assembling by this mechanism it may be preferable to provide more convenient means than the crank 25 to enable the operator to rotate the segment with the right hand and at the same time have his thumb free to advance the top type line.

Any suitable means may be provided for turning the main drum step by step. -I have shown a gear 65 rigid with the main drum and having teeth spaced correspondingly to the positions of the rails, and with this gear meshes a pinion 66 on a short shaft which carries a hand wheel 67. Theturning of the hand wheel accordingly may rotate the drum step by step to bringa new channel into a receiving or discharging position. The shaft of the hand wheel and pinion may be mounted in a lever 68, shown as pivoted at 69 to ears rising from the frame plate 13 and a suitable spring (not shown) may act on the lever to hold the-pinion 66 inmesh with the gear or out of nesh, as desired. Such construction is not claimed herein, but in a prior application of H. C. Gammeter, No. 236,463, filed December 12. 1904.
\Vhen the page form has been assembled is transferred to its normal printingmachine. To provide for this I mount a suitable platen parallel with the drum with which the type held on the drum may coaet. This platen is shown in Figs. 1, Q, 3 and 8 and designated 70. It shown as mounted eccentrically on a shaft 71 which is journaled in the frame plates 12 and '13 and carries 'on one end a lever '72, whereby the position of the platen may be adjusted. The lever may engage and lock with a shiftable' member -73 (Fig. 1) mounted" on the end of the plate 13 and held in adjusted position by a set screw 74, after the manner" of the locking device shown and claimed in Patent No. 1,004,408. The platen has a gear 76 meshing with the main drum gear 65.
To take a proof of the matter on the drum, it is only necessary to properlysetcrank and drop or feed between the drum and platen. a sheet of paper and a carhon-sheet. such sheets (if fed dowmvardly) striking the frame fingers 75 and'heing ()r, in place of this, if desired, an inked fabric may be stretched about the type segment.
Figs. 2 and 8 illustrate at 27 a pair of .removable ribbon spools suitably'mounted between the end members 16 and 17 of the drum and carrying a fabric 28, which, by the removal and replacement of the spools, may extend across the segment. If desired these spools may be periodically rotated by mechanism, as shown, for example, in Patent No. 997,286. It should be noted that the type drum and platen and such fed inked ribbon constitute a simple n-inting press, which may be used to pro; duce a number of copies, if desired To provide for handling different fonts of type by the transfer controlling mechanism described, I provide an adjustmentfor the position of the abutment or stop face which the type engages on entering the, auxiliary drum. As shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, the block 58 has, in addition to the lug 59, another lug 7'? which stands a less distance from the plane at the end of the auxiliary drum. This block is held on the blade 56 by a screw 78 and the into position.
loosening of this screw enables the block to be turned other end down to substitute the lug 77 for the lug 59. This provides a receiving space corresponding to a smaller font of type. If desired, the block 58 may be provided with more diiferent sized lugs than the two shown and the block may be automatically turned as the'auxiliary drum is turned. Such a provision would enable the convenient distribution of type having various bodies running-wise, like regular printers type; For example, suppose there were eight sizes of type in the font used and eight different sizes or differently positioned lugs on'the block 58 and the block geared with the auxiliary drum so that each one eighth, more or less, of a turn ofthat drum would rotate the block to bring a new lug Then, by reserving several adjacent channels in the auxiliary drum for the smallest sized character and the next set of several channels for the next sized characters, and so on, the control of the various type of bodieswould be automatically effected. Such a modification as just referred to is illustrated in Figs. 9, 10 and 11'.- In this case, the blade 56 carries a rotatable arbor 80, one end of which carries 1 the stop block having various'lugs 81 and the other end of which carries apinion 82. This pinion is shown as meshing with an idler 88 pivoted concentrically with the pivot of the blade 56, and this idler meshes with a pinion 84; which occupies an opening in the frame member 12 and extends into position so that its teeth may be engaged by a series of pins 85 carried by the auxiliary drum. These pins (of which there would be eight in this embodiment) may be equally spaced or otherwise according to whether thesame number of channels or a. varying number are reserved for each size of type.
With the described arrangement, asthe auxiliary drum is turned, one pin 85 will engage a tooth of the wheel 84, and, through the gearing described, will turn the lugged wheel to bring a new lug 81 into alinement wheel and the-next lug 81 is brought into position and so on. It is entirely possible, with the eight different sized lugs shown to provide for all of the characters of type in an ordinary printers font, for, though the number of sizes in fonts vary, they may be reduced to eight or lessdiflerent sizes without disturbing the appearance of the printing produced. The rows of characters which have been distributed onto the auxiliary drum may be conveniently removed therefrom by the aid of a split tube projected into the socket 62 of the disk 48. Should it be desired to retain the distributed type in the auxiliary drum instead of shoving them out of that drum, this may be easily accomplished by taking the drum off of the machine. Simply pulling out the knob 47 on the end of the plunger 4-3 releases the hand wheel from the sleeve 30 and that sleeve from the shaft 15. Then, the receiving drum, with its sleeve and stop disk 48, may be taken oil of the shaft and a new drum substituted for it. Then the stopping disk may be retained on the sleeve or transferred to a new sleeve, as desired.
By way of summary, it may be noted that my mechanism provides a very simple device for receiving and holding in parallel relation lines of assembled type to effect a page form; for then taking a proof of such form enabling corrections to be made, if necessary; then allowing the removal of the page form as a whole to a suitable printing machine, and, after the printing, enabling the convenient distribution of type into channels for various characters. From these channels the type may be shoved lengthwise into split tubes. or other holders, and returned to any storage device. The
assemblage of the lines on the main drum is accomplished simply by shovingthe type across the auxiliary drum into the main drum and rotating the main drufn to bring transfer controller, While, by having this nel, of a movable type holder, an abutment controller with several faces and geared with the auxiliary drum, type of the character of a printers font may be employed. If de-' sired, as above explained, the main'drum may be a storage member carrying type arranged a character to a channel, and such type may be then assembled into Words .on the auxiliary drum.
