thereof, as, for example, in making out insurance policies by filling in the necessary data in spaces provided in printed blanks, the original of each policy being delivered to the party insured, and one or more copies thereof being preserved in the files of the insurance company.
In work of this character it is customary to provide a considerable-number of difierent forms to correspond with the different kinds-of policies written, a separate form being used for each type of policy, and each individual policy being prepared by writing into the proper form the appropriate data in accordance with the facts. The usual'op eration involves selecting from the filing case in which the form blanks are stored, the required number of copies of the proper form blank assembling these blanks with the necessary number of carbon sheets, and inserting and positioning the assembled blanks and carbon sheets in the typewriter, all of which must be done before the work of filling in the forms is commenced, thereby consuming, in preparationfor the work, a considerable amount of time in proportion to the time needed for the actual making out of the forms. I
The present invention has for its primary object the provision of means whereby this loss of time may be greatly reduced and the required number of duplicate copies prepared in accordance with any desired stock form, with a minimum expenditure of time and effort.
A more particular object of the invention is to provide means whereby a considerable stock of blanks for each of a number of different forms may be conveniently stored and rendered quickly available for the purpose of preparing the required number of copies of a policy or-other document from any said forms.
Further objects of the invention are to provide means for facilitating" the introduction of the required blanks into the proper writand for eliminating the necessity of excessive care on the part of the operator in order 'to'insure the proper manipulation and operation of the mechanism. I
With the foregoing and other objects in view I have devised the novel mechanism which .I will now describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which: F 1g. 1 is a side elevation of the complete apparatus, the side wall of the cabinet being partly broken away to show the interior construction and arrangement.

Referring to Figs. 1, 5, 6 and '7, 25 de notes a typewriting machine having the usual type keys 26, shift keys 27, space bar 28 type bars 29, and ribbon feed mechanism 30. Said typewriting machine may, in general, be of any usual or well known form with the exceptionot the carriage and the supporting means therefor, which are of special construction as will now be described.
31 denotes brackets bolted or otherwise secured to the rear of the typewriter frame and supporting parallel front and rear rails 32 and 33 upon which the rearwardly. elongated carriage is supported, as by rollers 34, for travel transversely of the typewriter frame. Although the carriage and its sup-v porting means are of novel construction, the means for operating said carriage may be of well known form comprising the usual tension mechanism 35, 7 and escapement mechanism 36, the latter including a pinion (not shown) on the typewriter frame, said pinion engaging a rack 37 on the carriage, as will be familiar to those skilled in the art a without illustration or description in detail.
The escapement mechanism is, as usual, manually operable to release the carriage by means of an escapement release bar 39 operable by finger leve'rslO whenever it is desired to move'the carriage by hand. Said carriage compr ses rectangular frame formed of rearwardly extending rails 41 and transverse front and rear bars 42 and 43,
respectively, connecting the rails 41 and car rying the rollers 34. The travel of the car riage in opposite directions is limited by engagement of a lug 44 carried by the bar 42 with studs 45 on the rail 32. In View of the adapted for engagement by the palm of the operators hand'in order to force the carriage back against the pull of the tension mechanism 35.
The carriage above described is adapted to receive any one of a plurality of interchangeable carriers 48 which are identical in construction. Each ,of the said carriers comprises a shallow, trough-like frame 49 (see particularly Figs. 17, 18 and 19) reinforced at its rear end by a cross member 50 and at its forward end by an upper transverse bar 51', said member and bar being provided with handles 52 and 53 by which the carrier may be readily liftedand other wise manipulated. Each of the carriers 48 further comprises a platen 54 adapted, when the carrier is inoperative or writing position in the carriage, to receive the impression of the type on the type bars 29 (see partlicularly Fig. 21) and carries a suitable number of -work sheet reels 55 which c'arry the work sheets or blank forms which are to be filled out. Said blank forms are printed in' series on continuous paper webs 56 which are wound on the reels and are of considerable length, the webs carried by all of the reels 55 of the same carrier being similarly printed to constitute like forms, and the several carriers being provided with differently printed webs in accordance with the different forms I in use, it being understood that a number of carriers corresponding to the number of forms used will be employed. As hereafter more fully described, means are provided for feeding the webs 56 from the several reels 55 over the platen 55k in superposed relation and for passing between said webs a suitable number of strips or webs 57 of carbon paper or equivalent transfer or manifolding. mate rial, whereby all of said webs may receive the same impressions from the type-bars 29 during their passage overtlie platen.
(The carriage as above described is of special construction and has a function different than that of the usual typewriter carriage. It is] means by which the carrier units, comprising the platen, work sheets and carbon paper or transfer material, are removably connected with the reciprocating mechanism of the typewriter which includes the tension and escapement mechanism.
Said means, while described as a carriage and illustrated as a frame, may be of any construction adapted to allow the operator to quickly and easily brin the carrier units into connection with and 'dis jconnect them from said reciprocatingmechanism, thereby making the carrier utiits freely interchangeable and difi'erentia'ing from the practic'ally permanent connectlon. now employed.
The connection or relation between the units and the reciprocating mechanism is such that the units may be disconnected and removed therefrom without breakin down from the typewriter and another placed in position thereon without breaking down any part of the typewriter or carrier, orchanging either one in any way.
Each carrier frame 49 is securedmto and supported by a pair of cross bars 58 provided at their ends with rollers 59 (see Figs. 9 and 10) adapted. to travel on the carriage rails 41, said bars 49 having end carrier 48 in operative position in the typewriter carriage, the lugs 60 of the carrier in question are dropped through the notches 61 of the carriage rails 41'. thereby seating the rollers 59 on said rail. and the carrier moved forwardly along said rails into writing position with the platen 54 so located as to receive the impression of the type faces on the type-bars 29, this forwardmovement of the carrier bringing the lugs 60 beneath the flanges 62 and thereby retaining said carrier in place on the carriage. In order to facilitate the placing ofthe carrier on the carriage the rails 41 may, if desired, be provided with outwardly flared guide members 63 (see Figs. 5 and.6) adapted to guide'the rollers 59 into position on said rails. one of said guide members 63 being provided with forwardly I and rearwardly flared guide 1 flanges 64 adapted to guide one of the lugs 60 into the corresponding notch 61. The

Said carrier is locked in the writing position, after being brought thereinto, by means of a locking dog 67 pivoted to a bracket 68 secured to one of the rails 41 and normally held by. a spring 69 in an elevated position to engage a lug 70 (see Fig. 10) on the bottom of the carrier frame 49. said dog being depressed to.release the lug 70 and permit therearward movement and removal of the carrier by means of a lever 71 pivoted at 72 to one of the side members of the carrier frame 49 and provided wlth an operating finger piece 7 3.
Means are preferably provided for preventing the insertion of a carrier into the carriageor the removal of the same therefrom except when said carriage is in its extreme position toward the right (i. e. in a position to begin a line of writing) and also to prevent the movement of the carriage,
and'consequently the operation of the'typewriting mechanism, until the carrier-has been moved into the proper writing position.

When. however, the finger piece'105 is returned to its normal position, as shown in Fig. 17. engagement of the arm 129 with. the lug 127 will move the rod 124 forwardly, thereby causing the spring cam 125 to raise the slide 119 and reengage the worms 122 with the gears 123.
From the fpregoing it will be seen that when the feed roller 97 is turned by either of the knobs 106 to move the paper webs backwardly or downwardly the reels 55 will be positively actuated to wind up the amount of web thus fed backwardly by the feed rollers. but that when said feed rollers are operated .in the usual manner to advance the web. the reels will not be positively actuated but will be turned merely by the withdrawal of the web therefrom. It will also be seen that when the feed rollers are separated. for the purpose of positioning the web therebetween or otherwise. the actuating mechareel by reason of inequalities in the amount of web wound on the several reels or other wise. Y
The carbon paper or other transfer material is preferably also supplied in the form of a suitable number of continuous strips or Webs 57, said Webs being stored in the form of rolls wound on studs 130 (Figs. 9'and 10) having flattened or notched portions which are received in slots or notches 131 (see Figs. 17 and 18) in one of the side members of the carrier frame 49. Withdrawal of the transfer Webs from the rolls is yieldingly resisted, so as to apply a light tension to said webs, by means of discs 132 loosely mounted on reduced outer ends. of the studs 130 and pressed into engagement with the outerfaces of the rolls by means of springs 133 interposed between said discs and adjusting nuts on the outer ends of said studs. From the rolls the transfer web is carried about suitable guide studs or members 135, 136 and 187, thence longitudinally of the platen bar 54 between the work sheet webs 56 and trans verse to the. latter, and finally about a guide 138 (Fig. 11) at the opposite side of frame to mechanism for periodically feeding said webs a predetermined amount in .order to supply fresh portions thereof at the point where the writing takes place. Referring to Figs. 12, 15 and 16, 139 denotes a short upright shaft journalled in a bracket 140 se cured to one of the side members. of the carrier frame 149 and having fast thereon a feed roller 141. 142 denotes a cooperating feed roller journalled on an eccentric stud 148 rotatably mounted in the bracket 149 and provided with a finger piece 144 whereby said stud may be turned to-separate the feed rollers. 145 denotes a pinionloosely mounted on the shaft 139 and prov ded wlth sprin pressed pawls 146 which engage in ternal ratchet teeth in the walls of a concentrio recess formed in the upper end of the roller 141. By this construction itwill be seen that the feed roller 141-may be turned by the pinion 145 or independently thereof by the shaft, 139 which is preferably provided with a manual operating knob 147. The pinion 145 meshes with a rack 148 formed on the forward end of a link 149 connected with the adjacentside member of the carrier frame by a spring 150. The rear end of the link 149 is formed with an ear pivoted at 151'(see Figs. 12 and 13) to a lever 152 fulcrumed at 153 to the bottom of the carrier casing and 'having at its opposite end a stud 154 guided in a slot in the bracket 76 and adapted to engage the inclined edge of the cam flange 74. The construction is such that, as the carriage is moved from left to right in order to commence a new line of writing, engagement of the stud 1'54 with the cam flange 74 will rock the lever 152 on its pivot, moving the link 149 in oppositlon to the spring 150, thereby, through the rack 148, pinion 145, and pawls 146, turning the feed roller 141 and advancing the transfer a web a predetermined amount. As the carriage travels from'right to left during the writing operation the cam flange 74 permits the spring 150 to return the link 149 to its initial position, the pinion 145 at this time turning idly without moving the feed roller 141.= In order to permit the effective stroke of the lever to be varied, thereby varying the amount which the transfer web is fed at each traverse of the carriage, the pivot 153 comprises a stud which is received in aslot- 155 in said lever and 1s earned by a slide 156' adjustably connected with the backmembii 50 of the carrier frame by'a screw 157 work.- ing in a slot 158 in said frame member. As is common practlce in typewriter construction, each type bar 29 is provided with two type faces 159 and 160 (Fig. 21) which are brought alternatively into printing position by operation 'of the shift keys 27. In order to avoid all possibility of a double impression of these two type faces, due to the flat surface of the platen 54, as also to hold the' webs 56 (which are slightly curved by reason of their having been rolled on the reels 55) in flat position against the impression surface of the platen, the followmg devices are preferably employed. 161

Adjacent their upper vends the elevator uprights 167 carry a plurality of pairs or horizontally disposed rails 182 connected at their forward ends by upright bars 202, said rails being vertically spaced a sufficient distance to recelve between them the carriers 48, so as to constitute compartments for said carriers and horizontally spaced to correspond with the horizontal spacing oi: the carrier rails 41 of the typewriter carriage. Each'pair of rails 182 is adapted to receive and support one of the carriers 148, inward movement of said carriers along said rails being limited by stops 183 which engage the rear carrier rollers 59. The construction is alinement with the rails 41, one of the elevator uprights 167 is formed with a series of beveled notches 184 adapted to receive the beveled end of a positioning dog 185 pivoted to.one of the guides 166 and controlled by a spring 186 which tends to force said dog into engagement with said notches.
The notches 184 are so located that when any is engaged by the dog 185 one of the pairs of rails 182 will be in accurate alinement with the rails 41, the beveled shape of said notches and dog causing the elevator to .be automatically moved into this position when manually brought nearly thereinto. For releasing the dog 185 there is provide'dfa treadle 187 in the form of 'a bell crank' lever pivoted to the cabinet frame adjacent the bottom of the latter and connected by a chain 188 with a bell crank lever 189 also pivoted to the cabinet frame and connected by a chain 190 with a bell crank lever 191 pivoted to one of theuprights 166' and connected by a chain 192 with the dog 185.
For locking the several carriers 48 against accidental displacement from their respective rails 182 except when said rails are in alinement with the rails 41, there are provided-spring actuated locking dogs 193 (Fig.
1) respectively adapted, when in normal position, to engage one of the lugs '60 of each ment with the lug60, so as to permit the for- Ward movement of the corresponding carrier 48 from the rails 182 to the rails 41.
It is, of course, important that the elevator be not moved when any carrier 48 has been moved partly but not entirely out of said elevator so as to be supported partly by the rails 182 and partly by the rails 41. In order to prevent such accidental move ment of the elevator the following'mechanism is employed. 197 (Figs. 2 and 4) denotes a dog pivoted to one of the elevator uprights 167 and adapted to engage any one of a series of notches 198 in the corresponding upright 166 when any pair of rails 182' is in alinement with the rails 41, thereby locking the elevator against vertical movement. The dog 197 is connected by a link 199 with a series of levers 200 pivoted to one of theelevator uprights 167 and having at-their "forward ends pro jections 201 adapted for engagement by the bottoms of the carrier frames 49 as the carriers are moved into and out of the elevator.
