T 0 all whom it may, concern Be it known that I, IRVING R. Lnonnnu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence. in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Link-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class -of separable link buttons that is particularly adapted for use upon stiff or soft ends, for connecting softcollar points. and for fastening fabrics desired to be held in a spaced apart relation.
It has heretofore been attempted to insert in the shell of one of the button members flexible arms projecting from the shell and interengageable with a second button member, but this construction has involved the use of an excessive number of parts, and the compressibility of tlie arms has subjected the parts to accidental disengagement.
It has been further attempted to slot one of the two interengaging button members but this has weakened the entire button structure so as to prove disadvantageous.
It is the essential object of my invention to overcome these weaknesses and to produce a button of this type possessing a minimum of parts with a maximum of strength, and which will insure such an interengagement of the members as shall prevent accidental disengagement.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and combination of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation of my link engaged in the margins of a cuff or collar which are shown in section, Figs. 2 and 3, a plan and vertical central section respectively of the female member. Fig. 4, a section on line 4-4 of Fi 3 Fi e. 5 and 6, a lan view and a longitudinal central section respectively of the male member of the button, Fig. 7 a longitudinal central section of the entire button in engaged position, and Fig. 8 a detailed view of the resilient member.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views. My button comprises two members, one of which 10 comprises a hollow post 11 provided upon one end with a flat plate 12 having an annular recess 13 formed concentrically therein around the opening 1d of the post. The annular recess in this case is formed by making an angular bend 15 in the plate 12. Resting upon plate 12 is a flat plate 17 engaging the margin of plate 12 by rolled over flange 18. The plate 17 is provided with a central opening 20 of substantially the same diameter as the diameter of the post opening 14:. Loosely seated in the annular recess 13 is a flexible spring member 21 radially expansible and lying in a horizontal plane. In the present instance, this member is a split ring whose split or space 22 permits radial or lateral movement only in the recess 13. When seated in the recess, this ring in its normal or contracted position is of less diameter than the opening 20 in plate 17. and sliding contact is had between the plate 17 and the portion of the bend 15 which forms the base of the recess. The width of the recess 13 is sufficiently ample to allow expansion of this ring. Fixed to the bottom of post 11 in any usual convenient manner is a button head 24: of metal, pearl, or any other material. In the present instance, the member is shown as of metal. and is engaged to the post by a rolled over flange 25 engaging the end of the post.
The second or coiirdinating button member 27 comprises a post 28 provided at one end with a lateral flange 29 upon which rests a plate 30 engaged to the flange by rolled over edge 31. In the center of the plate 30 is a rounded head 33 upon the end of the re tracted neck 34. Uponthe base of the post 28 is a head 35 of any suitable shape and material, but in the present instance of metal, and engaging the end of the post 28 by a turned over flange 37.
The operation of the button member is as follows: The members 10 and 27 are inserted through the button holes 39 of the cuff or collar portions 10 and held against disengagement therefrom by the heads 24 and 35 and by the annular shoulders formed by the plates 12 and 17 in one instance, and plates 29 and 30 in the other instance.
