HAT-PIN.
Application filed April 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, ELIZABETH D.
PownLL, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Titusville, in the county of Brevard, in the State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
ihis invention relates to improvements in hat pins and its object is to produce a pin that is made with a hinged sectional point which, in open position, when in use lies close to the crown of the hat and does not present a sharp point which would be dangerous to the public welfare.
The invention is simple, practical and neat in appearance and is cheap to manufacture.
This invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a view of the pin with the point in closed position ready to be thrust through the crown of a hat. Fig. 2 is a view of the pin with the point in open position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of one end of the pin partly in section. Fig. 4: is a top plan view of Fig. 3, with the sleeve removed.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
lhe reference numeral 1 denotes a rod provided with a head 2 and movably arranged in a sleeve 3 which is provided with a suitable handle 4. The inner end of the rod 1 is reduced as at 5 and inserted in the pronged end of the sectional shank 6 of the sectional point 7, the said point being divided from the said shank by a beveled annular shoulder 8 which may serve as a stop for the adjacent end of the sleeve 3. A pin or rivet 9 connects the reduced end of the rod 1 to the pronged end of the shank 6 and about said rivet a spring 10 is wound once, the ends of said spring being disposed in grooves formed in the point sections in such a manner as to tend to separate said sections. When the shank 6 is drawn into the end of the sleeve 3 the tendency of the Specification of Letters Patent.

spring 10 to separate the sections thereof and the sections of the point is nullified by the sleeve 3 but when the shank is thrust out of the said sleeve by means of the rod 1 the spring will separate said sectional members and throw them into open position illustrated in Fig. 2.
In use the pin, with the point in close position, is thrust through the hat crown and the point then moved into open position as previously described when the point sections will lie close to the hat crown in which position they are out of the way and devoid of danger to society. The pin is withdrawn from the hat by pulling the shank 6 back into the sleeve 3.
What is claimed is 1. A hat pin comprising a sleeve provided with a handle, a rod slidably disposed in said sleeve, a sectional shank connected to said rod and normally disposed within said sleeve, a sectional point formed integral with said sectional shank and disposed beyond said sleeve and means connecting said sectional members for yieldingly forcing them apart.
2. A hat pin comprising a sleeve provided with a handle, a rod slidably disposed in said sleeve, a sectional element comprising a shank and point pivotally connected to said rod and adapted for partial telescoping engagement with said sleeve and means disposed between the sections of said element for yieldingly forcing them apart.
3. A hat pin comprising a sleeve provided with a handle, a rod slidably disposed in said sleeve and formed with a head, a sectional element comprising a grooved shank and point pivotally connected to said rod and adapted for partial telescoping engagement with said sleeve whereby said sections are normally retained in closed relation, and a spring disposed in the grooved portions of said sectional element for yieldingly forcing them apart.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiiXed my signature in the presence of two subscribing wit- LIZZIE D. POWELL.
