HAT PIN.
APPLICATION FILED we. 12. 1901.

HAT-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed August 12. 1907. Serial No. 388,251.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER S. ltUMBERo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norway, in the county of Dickinson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HatPins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hat pins.
The object of the invention is to provide a hat pin or the like having means whereby the same will be prevented from being casually removed or lost from the hat, but which may be readily removed therefrom when desired.
With this object in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a hatpin constructed. in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the head and the adjacent portion of the pin; and F ig. 3 is an end view of the head.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the pin, in the larger or heavier end of which is formed a longitudinally disposed bore, 2, with which communicates a transversely disposed opening, 3, formed in one side of the pin. Formed integral with the larger end of the pin, or rigidly secured thereto, is a radially projecting annular flange, 4, to which is riveted or otherwise secured a head, 5.
In the head, 5, is foimed a centrally disposed passage 6, the inner end of which is enlarged to form a oonically shaped recess, 7, in which is seated a tapered coiled spring 8, which rests upon or bears against the inner side of the flange, 4, one end of said spring being secured in the inner side of the head, 5. The outer end of the spring 8 bears against and is engaged by the inner end of a knob, or head, 9, which is rigidly secured to the outer end of a pin fastening rod, 10, which projects through the spring and into the bore 2 formed in the larger end of the pin. On the l l i l inner end of the rod, 10, is formed a rearward ly projecting barb, 12, which, when the rod 10 is forced outwardly, by means of the spring, 8, will project through the opening, 3, in the side of the pin and thus form a catch or detent which will engage the material into which the pin is inserted and prevent the casual withdrawal of the pin. When the rod, 10, is pushed inwardly,- through the medium of thc head or knob, 9, the barb 12 will beretracted into the opening, 3, thus permitting the pin to be readily inserted in or withdrawn from the hat, or other article. The edges of the opening, 3, are beveled in the proper direction to facilitate the passage of the barb into and out of thc bore of the pin.
By constructing the head and spring in the manner herein shown and described, the latter will be entirely concealed, thereby providing for the construction of a neat, attI actively appearing pin, embodying the fastening features hereinbefore described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A pin of the character described having formed in its larger end a longitudinally disposed bore, and a transversely disposed opening in one side to communicate with said bore, a barbed fastening rod slidably mounted in the bore of said pin, a coiled spring arranged on the outer end of said rod to projeot the barbed end of the same through the transverse opening in the side of the pin, a recessed head having a centrally disposed aperture, means to secure said head to the end of the pin, and an operating knob secured to the end of said fastening rod and adapte d to work through the aperture in said head, substantially as described.
2. A. pin of the character described having formed in its outer end a longitudinally disposed bore and a transversely disposed opening to communicate with the inner end of said bore, a radially projecting annular flange on the larger end of said pin, a fastening rod slidably mounted in said longitudinal bore of the pin, a barb on the end of said rod adapted to work through the transverse opening in the side of the pin, a tapered coiled spring arranged around the outer end of said fastening rod and adapted to bear In testimony whereof I have hereunto set against the flange on the end of said pin, an my hand in presence of two subscribing Witoperating knob on the outer end of said rod nesses. to engage said spring, and a head having PETER S. RUMBERG. {5 formed therein a tapered passage adapted to t Witnesses:
