IMPROVEMENT IN CU LTWATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,381, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, W. THOMAS JORDAN, of Newnan, in the county of Coneta and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
-This invention consists in arranging or constructing a plow so that the foot and plowshare form a cycloidal curve, together with the arrangement of the several parts as hereinafter more fully described.
The accompanying drawing represents a side view and elevation of the plow.
Ais the beam, having at or near its center arms B B. F is the foot of the plow. Eis the plowshare. D is the rod, secured by means of the movable band H to the beam A. G G are braces made adjustable upon the beam A by suitable pins.

The foot F is made of a thin bar of iron bent in the middle, and its sides brought together sufficiently to admit the bolt o passing through it, each side of the foot F being made to run parallel from the toe of the foot up to the joint l), where its sides are hipped conversely or spread in order to admit the beam A, and prolonged further, with its sides still ruiming parallel with each other, and far enough to admit of the foot F being shortened or lengthened by means of a bolt, P, in the holes m, which securely1 fastens the foot F and braces G to the beam A for the purpose of lengthening or shortening for subsoiling or cultivating, and the braces to suit the height of the persons using it. The foot F is also graded on the outward curve by means of the notches n to receive the hook on the semi-collar I K attached to the rod D. The end L of said collar has its sides turned down in order to support and prevent the foot F from springing out. Its head is turned down sufficiently to catch in the notches n to prevent the collar from sliding' when the draft is applied. Through the end L ofthe semi collar a bolt, o, passes, which fastens the share E rigidly to the footF by means of a tap. The end K of the semi-collar has a joint in which the end of the. rod D is fastened by a bolt or pin. When the top on the bolto is loosened the plowshare E, bolt o, semi-collars I K, and the rod D can be slipped up or down, thereby shortening or lengthening the plowshare E on the foot F, and at the same time changing the set of the said foot with the beam A in fractional parts of an inch, as may be required. The rod D is of iron and has a parabola shape, and is hinged at the end K of the sliding semi-collar by a suitable screw and nut. The other end of the rod D is fork-shaped, having two prongs at its end which fit and catch into the holes formed in the metal plate or slat I, said plate or slat being formed of a thin piece of metal, in width to `correspond to the width of the under side of the bealn A, and let in the beam its thickness, and secured by nuts or other suitable fastenin gs. The plate or slat I has perforations or rectangular holes a suitable distance apart, the object of this plate or slat being to prevent the band H from slipping while holding or clamping the rod in its proper position and to stay the foot F from working on the hinged joint p. The band EI is raised in the center of the top to admit threads being cut, and with its sides from top down half-wary7 made of same width to admit the slide 7L being moved up or down. It passes over and around one prong 011 the end of the rod D and around the beam A, and is tightened and holds the rod to its proper place by means of the hand-screw c and slide lt on the top of the beam. 4The slide is a piece of band-iron with each end out out the size of the width of the sides of the band H in order to slide up and down between the beam and hand-screw c. The hand-screw c may be made of any form or shape, and is intended to so tighten the band H on the end of the rod D as to prevent its prongs from getting out of the rectangular holes in the slat or plate I. The beam A and handles B B may be made of iron or wood or lany suitable material. The braces G G are of iron or other metal, as may be found necessary, one end of which is attached to the handles B within or near the cross-bar fl, the other ends of which are secured to the foot F. by means of a removable pin or bolt in the holes m. The foot F and plowshare E being of such shape that they form together a cycloidal curve, and whose form is so constructed as to be adapted to any kind of plowing in agricultural purposes by means of the cycloidal curve of the foot and share of the plow-stock, when the foot has been given the proper angle of declination in the quadrant of a circle Whose radius is the Jfoot F, the dirt is raised from its bed with less friction on that curve than any other curve or straight line, and consequently with less draft to the animal, by adjusting on the beam A and graduating on the foot F. The position of the cycloidal foot F With the beam A in regard to the set of the plow is changed by means of the rod D hereinbefore described. By adjusting on the beam by inches in the rectangular holes in plate or slat I equal intervals by grades n on the foot F would change the set of the foot with the beam in fraction al parts of an inch, hence any required set of the foot F can be obtained. By means of the sliding semi-collars L K, through which the bolt o passes, is secured the plowshare E to the foot F 5 and many advantages are gained by'this arrangement, as the plowshare E can be lengthened or shortened from its point to the toe of the foot F by means of loosening the top on bolt 0 and hand-screw c and sliding the semi-.collar up or down, With its hook catching in the grades n to secure it When the top is tightened. Thus arises the distinction between adjusting on the beam and graduatingon the foot. Were the foot F as straight as the beam A, supposing both ends of the rod D to be at equal distances from the joint Where the foot F and beam A meet each other, then moving the sliding' collar one grade up or down would change the set of the foot F,
With the beam A kept in a horizontal position or the point of the share E in the quadrant of a circle, exactly the same distance as moving the opposite end of the rod D on the beam A at an equal interval. But the foot F and plowshare E have the cycloidal curve; hence moving a grade on the cycloidal foot F Will only change the position of the foot with the beam so much as the cycloidal curve of the foot F is greater or more elliptical than a circle Whose radius is the rod D. Therefore the change in the set of the foot F produced by means of the sliding collar in the grades n is as much less as the beam A is straighter than the cycloidal foot F; or the change is diminished in proportion to the changing of a straight foot to a regular circular one.
