ALVIN L. SMITH, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
VACUUI'E MASSAGE DEVICE.
Application filed May 26, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ALvIN L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at l Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain useful Improvements in Vacuum Massage Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My present invention relates to improve ments in vacuum massage devices, one object of the invention being the provision of manually operated device which may be actuated independently of any extraneous power such as electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic motors, and which is simple, ineX- pensive, and durable in construction, and which is thoroughly efficient and practical in use.
in the accompanying drawings: Figure'l is a perspective view of the complete device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. 3 is a side elevation or" the plunger, piston, and handle, per se.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a tubular member closed at one end as at 6, and provided with the diametrically opposite longitudinal slots or openings 7, the remaining end 8 being opened and constituting-the suction end of the present device.
Although not here shown, any form of manipulating ends may be attached to the open end 8 without departing from the present invention.
A tubular piston rod 9 is disposed Within he member 5 for reciprocation, the same having attached at its upper end 10 the finger engaging and operating member 11, which is preferably provided with a fiat and apertured portion 1 for receiving the end 10 of the piston 9. Thus, by placing the Specification of Letters Patent.

end 6 in the palm of the hand and gripping the two ends of the handle 11 with the second and third fingers, the piston rod 9 may be readily reciprocated, the ends of the handle 11 being projected through and accessible exteriorly oi the member 5.
The lower end of the piston or stem 9 is threaded as at 13 for nine reception of the inner locking disk 1% and the intermediate metal disks 15 which support the leather or flexible glands 16, the nut 17 being disposed upon the extreme end to hold the glands and separating disks in position.
in operating the present device, the end 8 is disposed upon the face or the portion of the body to be treated, and with the end 6 in the palm of the hand, the handle 11 is gripped, and consequently the plunger upon the lower end of the stem 9 is actuated to produce a vacuum.
What 1 claim as new is A vacuum massage device comprising a tubiform body of uniform cross sectional size throughout closed at one end and having diametrically opposite elongated slots extending from a slight distance spaced from the closed end to a point medially of said member, a piston rod interiorly of said tubiform member, a piston reciprocatingly slidable in the tubiform member and connected to one end of the piston rod, and a handle bar connected to the piston rod at its end opposite the piston and disposed transversely of the tubitorm member through the slots therein for the protruding of the ends o1 the handle bar a considerable distance without said member at opposite sides thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALVIN L. SMITH.
