vBe it rnown that we, lfVAL'rnn S. Molins, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, and WESLEY G. NICHOLS, a citiaen of the United States, a resident of Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have made and invented rwiLaia new and useful improvements in `clrs for Excavating-Dippers, of which the following is a specification.
Cnr invention relates to dippers designed for use with excavating, dredging, digging and similar machines, and particularly to clippers having a body portion made up of two parts formed from cast metal such, for example, as cast manganese steel, and each of which parts commonly forms approximately one-half of the dipper body, the parts being secured together along joints located in th-e sides of the body; although as will hereinafter appear, our invention in no way involves the relative extent of the front and back portions of the body and is independent of the location of the joints through which the back, made in accordance with our invention, is secured to other parts to thereby provide a complete dipper body. rllhe rear portion or back of such dipper bodies is provided with and includes various apertured lugs, as many as may be necessary, which lugs provide points of pivotal support for appropriate directing and guiding mechanism through which the dipper may be moved into a position adjacent the bank or material to be dug and held in proper position as the dipper is lifted through a suitable bail, and with other lugs from which the bottom or door of the dipper may be pivotally supported, which several lugs have heretofore been formed integrallyT with the back as the same is cast; the result being that should one or more of the lugs become broken in'use, or should one or more of the lugs be formed imperfectly as the back is cast, the entire back would have to be discarded because of the broken or imperfect or otherwise unserviceable lug.
ln order to avoid the objections above noted inherent in backs having integral lugs, our invention has for its chief object to provide a dipper bac-k with lugs formed separately therefrom and which lugs are adapted to be secured to the back, and to provide certain details of construction and arrangement of the back and lugs whereby the lugs may be readily secured the back in such a way as to provide a strong connection between the parts, all as hereinafter and more particularly explained.
lilith the above and other objects of invention in view, our invention consists in the improved clipper back and lugs formed separate therefrom, and in the various particular features of construction and arrangement thereof, all as illustrated in the accompanying drawing and hereinafter described and claimed, and in such variations and modifications thereof as will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which our invention relates.
ln the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this application, and wherein the preferred embodiment of our invention is illustrated: Figure l is a view showing our improved clipper back in side elevation, with a portion broken away to show particular features of construction; Fig. Q is a view showing the back in elevation, as seen from outside the clipper body.
Our improved clipper back is illustrated as made up of a back portion proper Ll, and two forwardly extending side portions 5, to which the sides of a front portion may be secured as by means of suitable rivets for which suitable and properly located holes are provided, as shown in Fig. l, the dipper body thus formed being designated as a twopart body and the parts thereof being commonly formed from cast metal. Our improved back, however, is independent of the other part or parts of the dipper body of which it may form an element or member, and independent also of the sides 5, which ides may extend a greater or less distance from the back portion proper 4l, or may be entirely absent in some types of dipper body in which our improved back may be employed.
rlhe back portion l above referred to is provided with a plurality of apertured lugs formed separate therefrom and detachably secured thereto, which lugs are preferably provided with base portions having beveled Lsides adapted to lit between and interlock with a corresponding number of pairs of undercut spaced ribs 6 formed on the back, and whereby a dove-tail joint is secured between the bases of the lugs and the back, as best shown in F ig. 1. Rivets, or equivalent fastening means, such as are shown at Z are also commonly provided, which rivets eX- tend through the back and bases and hold the bases in place between the ribs land assist in securing a strong connection between the back and lugs.
The number, arrangement, and particular features ot construction of the lugs above referred to are subordinate features of our invention. ln the embodiment of our invention illustrated, tour pairs oi lugs 8, 8 and 9, 9 are provided for the mechanism by means of which the clipper is moved into proper position for digging, and into position such that its contents may be dumped, said mechanism being pivotally connected with the back through the lugs; and two other pairs, 10, 1G are provided for pivotally supporting the swinging door which closes the bottoni of the dipper body and permits the contents thereof to escape when the door is released; all as will be understood by those slizilled in the art to which our invention relates. rhe various pairsof lugs are shown as formed integrally with bases 11, 1Q, 13, which bases are shown as beveled at their edges and itting between the spaced undercut ribs 6, as hereinbetore explained.
In view of the premises it will be appreciated that should any one or more of the lugs become broken or otherwise rendered unserviceable, as not infrequently happens when the dipper is in use, that particular lug may be removed troni the back and a new one substituted therefor, thus restoring the clipper to a serviceable condition and avoiding the necessity of sacrificing the entire back, as would be the case if the lugs were formed integrally therewith.
Hai/'ing thus described and explained our invention, what we claim is A back for dippers, comprising a cast metal plate with reinforcing ribs extending in a direction substantially parallel to the upper and lower edges of the dipper; the
ronting cast ribs provided with undercut side edges; and lugs, each comprising a base plate having upper and lower beveled edges, and outstanding spaced apertured plates, the beveled edges oi the base plates et' the lugs interlocking with the undercut sides of the ribs, and rivets extending through said base plates and through the said cast dioper baclr plate, holding the lugs in position between said ribs.
