SAMUEL W. JONES, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH NICHOLSON, OF SAME PLACE.
SOIL-BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,018, dated February 3, 1880.
- Application filed October 29, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. J ONES, of Detroit, Wayne county, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Soil-Buckets, of which. the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of soil-buckets; and the invention consists, first, in the construction of the ears upon either side of the bucket, which receive hook-lugs pendent from the cover, which is locked in place by a cam operated by the bail; second, in the peculiar construction of the cover so as to form an air-tight joint when in place; and, third, in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts, all as.
more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view with the cover disengaged. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the ears with outer face removed. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a bucket or vessel constructed of any suitable material. Secured to this bucket are the hollow ears B, in the rear faces of which are seated the spiders C. These spiders form boxes for the inner ends of the shafts D, the forward ends of which project through the front faces of the ears and receivethe ends of the bail E, being secured thereto in such manner that as the bail is moved from one side of the vessel to the otherthe said shafts will be compelled to partiallyrotate in the direction of such movement. Upon these shafts, cast with or otherwise secured to them, are the cams F, which rotate within the cars.
In the rim of the cover G a channel, a, is formed, within which is placed a rubber ring or packing, H, resting upon the shoulders 12, leaving a space or air-cushion beneath it. Pendent from the cover are the hook-lugs I, which enter the openings 0 in the ears when the cover is in place.
In operation, when the cover is placed upon' 1. A vessel provided with ears B, within each of which is arranged a cam, F, operated by the bail E, in combination with the hooklugs I on the cover G, substantially as set forth.
2. A cover, G, of a vessel, provided with a channel, a, to receive a rubber or other suitable packing, H, substantially as specified.
3. A vessel provided with cars 13, withineach of which is arranged a cam, F, operated by the bail E, in combination with a cover, Gr, provided with the hook studs or lugs I and rubber packing H, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. i
