SCRAPER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. GUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Modesto, in the county of Stanislaus, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements in scrapers and is especially designed as an improvement over my pending application for patent, Ser. No. 74:0,318, the object of the present invention being to produce a scraper which can be very much more easily handles and one which can be carried easier, thus making it easier for the stock and also one which at the same time will carry a greater amount of dirt than the scrapers now commonly in use.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the complete scraper. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the bowl of the scraper suitably mounted in a frame, as follows, namely: said bowl is rigidly connected to members 2 at each end, which members 2 project diagonally across the rear corners of such bowl. Said members 2 are provided at their outer ends with downwardly projecting members 2 which are then provided with members 2 projecting at right angles thereto and provided with shoes or cutting devices 4 disposed in the front of the wheels 8, which wheels are turnably mounted between the frames 2,- 2 2 and the said bowl. her 2* is also bent at its outer end to pro ject to and be rigidly fastened to the forward end of the bowl as at 2. On the forward end of the frame 2 are the usual supporting runners or carriers 5 having shoes 5 for carrying the device when it is in unloaded position.

The numeral 6 designates draw bars flexibly connected with the bowl 1 as by means of hooks 7. The outer ends of said draw bars 6 are flexibly connected as at 8 to clevises 8 mounted on a cross bar 9 having clevises 10 adapted to be connected to the swingle-tree used for draft ,purposes. The two members 6 are connected by a cross angle iron 11. The forward ends of the member 6 and the bar 9 are supported from the ground by means of a shoe 1% on a runner 12 connected to the bar 9 and to the angle iron 11.

The numeral 13 designates slotted cross bars on the runners 5 adapted to receive in a slidable manner, bolts 11 carrying a cross bar 15 extending across the top of the a bowl, the fixed position of said bar 15 being determined by wing nuts 16 on the bolts 14. Disposed centrally on the bar 15 is a hook 17 adapted to receive a chain 18 secured at its outer end to the member 11.

Since the bowl 1 is pivotally mounted on the bars 6, the angle at which the bowl 1 may be inclined for the cutting operation may be determined by the chain 18 being engaged with the hook 17 at different points and this adjustment can be further'carried out by moving the bar 15 along the bars 13 and fixing it at various positions as described. All of these various operations are of course primarily controlled by the operating handle 19.

When not in operation the bowl 1 rides on the wheels 3 as shown in Fig. 2, but when it is desired to dig, said bowl 1 is tilted on its flexible connections 7 by the handle 19 to bring the blade 1 into cutting position and the scraping operation is then performed and when the bowl is full of dirt, it is then tilted backwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2 and since the heaviest part of the load is to the rear of the point 17, it will hang in this position and ride on the wheels 3. When it is desired to empty the load the bowl is tilted to ride on the shoes 5 on the runners 5 and so the operations are repeated in the same order.

From the foregoing description it can readily be seen that l have produced such a scraper as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in do tail the present and preferred construction of the device, st ll in practice such deviations from such detail may be resor'edto as do not form a departure from the spirit ol the inventioi'i.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a bowl, frame comprising members rigidly disposed diagonally across each end of said bowl and projecting outwardly therefrom, a downwardly projecting member on each of said first membe s, wheels turnably disposed between said downwardly projecting members and the ends of said bowl, forwardly projecting members on said downwardly projecting members, said forwardly proj eting me1n bers depending inwardly in front of said wheels and being secured to said bowl,

Gopies of this patent may be obtained for of said draw bars, a runner connected with -I both of said last named beams, a shoe on said runner, and means adjustably connecting said first named beam with said bowl, as described.
