Description

- No. 891,916. I PATENTED JUNE 30, 1908.
M. M. DEPREBS.
GRADER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 30, 190'].
: WITNESSES:
MORRIS M. DEFREES, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
' GRADER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed October 30, 1907. Serial No. 399,808.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS M. Dnrmcns, citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlng.
This invention relates to improvements in graders hereinafter described in the specification and particularly pointed. out in the claims.
The object of this invention is to provide a cutting means situated at the front bottom portion of the grader whereby the earth is severed in layers of various thicknesses as desired and loosened to be removed by the scoop or grader, also, to provide means for adjusting the knife relative to the line of draft of the grader whereby the knife will out into the earth a greater or lesser extent or depth at one out according to the nature of the soil whether loose or compact. I attain these objects by means of the grader illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference designate like parts through the several views.
, Figure 1 is a front view of my invention of a grader, Fig. 2 is a partly broken sectional side view of the same, and, Fig. 3 is an inverted or bottom view of the grader.
This grader comprises in its construction the two side plates 1 and 2, the top and bottom edges of which are parallel, and said plates are situated in parallel relation to each other, and situated between and. securely connected to the rear ends of said plates is the curved plate 3 which is curved round a horizontal axis and situated so that its concave side is directed toward the leading end or knife end of said grader to form a bucket.
The knife 4 is constructed of such a length as to extend across the space between the front bottom ends of the side plates 1 and 2, and the ends 5 and 6 of said knife are pro longed and bent upwardly at right angles to said knife to fit against the outer sides of the forward ends of said side plates to which they are permanently and rigidly secured, as by rivets, to maintain said side plates in parallel relation to each other. The distance bar 8 is formed integral with said angle sides and is situated above said knife to extend over the space between the top forward edges of said side plates to rigidly and securely maintain them at their top forward portions in parallel relation to each other. An open space is therefore formed between said plates and extends from said knife 4 to said rear plate 3 exposing a surface of the ground upon which all the earth, or nearly so, loosened and broken up by said knife 1 is deposited to be carried or moved along by said grader in its course or path over the earth. A bail comprising the side radial bars 7 and 7, and the forward cross bar or draft bar 9, is situated between said side plates of the grader, and said side bars of said bail are pivotally connected at their rear ends to said side plates at a point situated adjacent the rear plate 3 and the bottom edges of said side plates by a bolt 10 which. pivotally secures the bars 7 and 7 of said bail to said side plates of the grader. A cap 12 is secured on the cross bar 9, and in the loop of said cap is swiveled the neck of the draft eye-bolt 13, and said eye-bolt is situated centrally of the grader so as to be in line with the line of draft of said grader. In the side plates 1 and 2 and the prolonged angle ends 5 of said knife 4 are formed the pin' holes 14, which are situated at equal radial distances from the pivotal center of the side radial bars 7 and 8 of the bail, and a pin hole is formed in each of said radial arms of said bail and adapted to register with any pair of said holes in the opposin sides of the grader, so that said radial side bars may be moved opposite any one pair of opposing holes in the grader and secured in position relatively to said knife that the angle of said knife relative to the line of draft of the grader may be varied to change the depth of the layer of earth to be taken at a single out. An eye bolt 15 is secured centrally on the convex side of-the plate 3, and the same is provided for the purpose of connecting a cable thereto whereby the scoop is returned to and into the excavation.
I claimz 1. A grader having vertical side plates, a kni'fe rigidly connected to the front bottom and edges of said plates, a rear plate extending between said. side plates and curved around a horizontal axis and situated with its concave side directed toward the loading or front end of the grader to form a bucket, and a draft device adjustably connected to said grader.
2. A grader having vertical side plates the bottom and top edges of which are parallel to each other, a knife situated at the front bottom edges of said plates and connected thereto to maintain the latter in parallel relation to each other, a rear plate extendin between said side plates and curved aroun a horizontal axis and situated with its concave side directed toward the leading end of the grader to form a bucket, and a bail pivotally connected to said side plates at a point adjacent to said rear plate and the bottom edges of said side plates and adjustably connected at the forward end of the grader.
3. A grader having vertical side plates the bottom and top edges of which are parallel to each other, a knife situated at the front bottom edges of said plates, angle sides, and
a connecting top portion formed integral with said knife, said sides secured to said side plates and said top extending over said plates parallel with the top surface of said knife to maintain the top edges of said plates in parallel relation to each other, a rear plate extending between said side plates at the rear ends of the latter and curved around a horizontal axis and situated with its concave side directed toward the leading end of the grader to form a bucket, a bail pivotally connected. to said side plates at a point situated adjacent the rear bottom edges of said side plates and said rear plate to radiate therefrom and means for adjustably connectin the bail at its forward end to the forward en of said grader whereby said bail may be set at any angle to said knife to vary the lead of the latter.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
