fication, reference being had to the accompauying drawings. 4
My invention relates to improvements in road 'levelers and scrapers, commonly known as drags, and its object is to provide a simple and practical device of this characterwhlch may be efiectively used upon clay roads and which Wlll be comparativel inexpensive .in construction and strong an durable.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved road leveler; Fig. 2 is a front view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical front to rear section taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fi 1'.
My improved road leveler or drag consists of two scraper bars or beams 1, 2 and a packing bar or beam 3. These three beams are parallel to each other and are spaced apart and connected to ether 'by braces or cross bars-4 and tie ro s or bolts 5. Said beams are also arrangedinoverl'ap in re-j.
lation when viewed s ua'rcly from t eront of'the device, in order that they may be angularly or. 'dia o'nally disposed and in alinement with eac 1 other when drawn over the road. To insure the latter a draft chain 6 has its ends attached to eye bolts 7 adacent to-the ends of the foremost scraper ar 1 and the whitfletrec 8 is provided with a chain or connection 9 having a hook 10 which maybe engaged with any of the links of the chain 0. It will be seen that by adjustln' the hook 10 upon the chain 0 the dia one angle of the bars or beams 1, 2, 3 mt respect to the road may be varied as desired. form of lanks an" upon the front faces of their bot om portions are bolted or otherwise seemed, as at 11, metal scraper blades or shoes 19 which eflectively level the road.
The sci- a er bars 1, 2 are in the The packing bar 3 is in the form of a heavy wooden beam the bottom of which is smooth so that said beam will firmly pack the earth which is cut from the high points in the road and deposited in the hollows or low points by the scraper bars. The cross bars or braces 4 are'arranged at right angles to the bars or beams which they connect and their ends are reduced and shouldered, as at 13, and inserted in openings 14 formed in said bars or beams 1, 2, 3. Two of the bars 4 are preferably provided between each two of said beams as shown and-the tie bolts i 5 are arranged adjacent to them so as to hold their reduced ends in said beams.
If desired, I may support a plank or'board upon the cross bars 4 upon which the driver may stand, as is common in devices of this character.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by arranging the two scraper beams and the T exceedingly strong and 'durable and owing to its simplicity may be. produced at a comparatively small cost.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
-A road leveler comprising two scraper beams and a packing beam arranged I in parallel and overlapping relation, the packin beam being heavy and the scraper beams lig t, metal scraper blades upon t e scraper beamabraces between said beams and 'hav- 1 :ing shouldered ends inserted in said beams,
tie bolts between said beams, a draft chain attached at its ends to the front scraper beam adjacent to the ends of the latter, and a whifiletree having a hook adjustably enga ed with said chain.
n testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
