Description

UNITED sTA'ras FATE OFFIQEQ WILLIAM ROPEB, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNGE OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY N. BENTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
METAL SASH-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Janjgg 1917.
Application filed. March 14, 1916. Serial No. s oes.
To all whom it may'concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ROPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Sash-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metal sash joints, the object of the invention being to provide an improved metal joint designed for use in connection with double and single glazed sash-in which the metal bars or muntins are rigidly secured together, and provide smooth faces to the joint and both sides of the sash.
A further object is to provide a sash oint of the character described which is extremely strong and durable, and which is neat and attractive in appearance.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an enlarged plan view. of my improved joint. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 77 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View in elevation of one muntin, showing the same in position to receive the other muntin, the latter being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is an edge view of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the other muntin, and Fig. 6 is an edge view of Fig. 5.
6 and 7 represent the two muntins, both of which are of general cross shape. In other words, the muntin 6 is provided at its center with oppositely projecting flanges 8, and the muntin 7 is provided with similar flanges 9, so that both muntins are cross shape with their flanges projecting at right angles to their web portion.
The muntin 6 has its flanged portions 8 cut away as shown at a distance equal to the width of muntin 7 at its flanges, so that the flanges 9 of the muntin 7 will rest in the cut out portion 10 and in alinement with the flanges 8 of muntin 6. Muntin 6 has a notch 11 in its web portion extending from the cut out portion 10 the proper distance.
Two tongues 12, 12, are formed of the web portion of muntin 6 by parallel slits 13 extending longitudinally of the muntin, and
one of said slits out along the line of juncture of the flange 8 with the web of the muntin. These tongues 12 are adapted to be bent laterally to admit the other muntin 7 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and a slot 14 is provided in the web of muntin 6, which extends from the outer slit 13 to the edge of the muntin.
Muntin 7 is provided with a notch 15 in one edge of its web, and this notch 15 is of a length equal to the distance from the end of notch 11 in muntin 6 to'the edge of the web of said muntin.
In assembling the joint, the tongues 12 are bent or curved laterally as shown clearly in Fig. 4, and then muntin 7 is positioned as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and moved longitudinally until the notch 15 in muntin 7 registers with the. web with muntin 6, when muntin 7 can be moved laterally, and during such movement the notch 15 of muntin 7 will straddle the web of muntin 6 and the notch 11 of muntin 6 will straddle the web of muntin 7, so that the outer edges of the muntins will be flush with each other. I/Vhen the muntins are thus positioned, the tongues 12 are bent back into alinement with the web of the muntin, and the two muntins will be securely joined without possibility of accidental displacement.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A metal sash joint comprising two interlocking muntins cross shape in transverse section, each muntin having crossed flat webs, one of said muntins having a slot extending transversely from one edge partway through one of its webs, said slot having an extension at an angle to the general direction thereof and cutting away a part of 'its other web, said first slotted web being slit to provide tongues laterally bendableto provide additional space intermediate said slot extension and said edge, the other of said muntins having crossed flat webs movable into said slot when the tongues are laterally bent, said latter muntin having a when the tongues are again bent into their notch in one edge of one of its Webs for innormal position, substantially as described. terlocking with the edge portion of the first- In testimony whereof I have signed my mentioned Web of the slotted muntin which name to this specification in the presence of 5 is remote from the filSt-IHGIltlOIFEd edge ocf1 two subscribing Witnesses.
the first muntin the other Web 0 the secon muntin being inovable into the slot in the WVILLIAM ROPER' seeoncl-mentioned Web of the first-mentioned \Vitnesses: Innntin the other Web of the second muntin CHAS. E. Form,
10 filling the remaining portion of the slot RHODA E. GILLIES.
