Description
t nrTnD STATES WENDELIN WEIS, OF STIPAUL, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-BOXES.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,985, dated July 18, 1876; application led June 5, 1876.
To all whom t may concern: l
Be it known that I, WENDELIN WEIs, otl St. Paul, in the county ot' Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inEgg-Garriers; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperiains to make and use the same, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings,.and to letters of'reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l represents my tray complete. Fig. 2 is an elevation View otl one ot' the outer strips, while Fig. 3 shows a moditication ot' the same principle. Fig. 4 is a detail View ot' the two two central partitionstrips.
The letters ot' reference are. as follows: A is the outer strip. c t are .the segmental tongues. a! is the straight slot. In the modification View, Fig. 3,15 is the strip having one tongue, b, and two straight slots, b b.
AMy invention has as its object an improvement on the egg-carrier granted to me Decem-` ber l5, 1874, numbered 157,896, in that, rst, the interlacing strips are Hush strips-that is, ot' one and the saine. width-whereby a con,- stant and unii'orm pressure is borne by both the cross-sections, and hence the tray is less liable to breakage and injurious derangement. Strips ot' this construction, whereby bot-h their upper and lower edges form, respectively,'con -tinuous plane surfaces, I term Hush strips.
Second, each ofthe outer strips is engaged to the connecting parts partly by the segmental tongues ot' its body proper locking in straight slots ot' said connecting-strips, and partly by a tongue of such connecting-strip locking into a straightslot oi' said outer strip.. By such latter means a more secure and durable lockis obtained t'or the parts, in that as either outer strip is subjected to a force tending to press the same from the tray-frame, such a force is met not only by the tongue resisting according to the strength ot' its plane dimension and at width, but such force is further opposed by the right-angular strength of the two pieces rigidly connected at either end, and formed by cutting the straight slot in the strip for the introduction of the tongue ofthe interlocking' strip. In this mode of locking it is seen that the tray is secured and strengthened in the jointure of its parts by not depending solely upon the resistance ot' the tongues acting in a line'of torce opposite-to their length, and which must necessarily be small, on account ot' the tongues being secured only at their base end, while the free end lcombined with the arc-shaped formation ot' the tongue renders the latters entire strength only equal to one-half ot' what it would be it' 1t' were a continuons piece, and
connected at either end to the body ot' the strip, as is the case in the construction ot' the remaining locking device used in the same strip, and in combination with this immediately above-described lock.- The third feature ot' my invention is, that middle partition-strips are united at the center ot' they filled, may also be supplemented by othervtrays.
Having fully describedmy invention, what` I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An egg-tray constructed ot' ush strips locked by segmental tongues, and engaging slots interchangeably formed on each side strip, in combination with partition-strips centrally secured by the tongue and slot ot' the one partition engaging, respectively, with the slot and tongue ot' the crossing partitions, substantially as and t'or the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WENDELIN WEIS. Witnesses:
FRANCIS F. WILDE, 'KARL HUBER.
