BALE-TIE.
SIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,534, dated December 14, 1897. Applicationfiled December 29, 1896. Serial No. 617,842. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS COLE ED- MONSTON, of Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to providea new and improved bale-tie which is simple anddurable in construction, not liable to become accidentally unlocked, and arranged to permit its use on ordinary compresses.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The improvedbale-tie fasteneris provided with a locking-plate A, formed near one end With an aperture A" for the passage of one end'of a wire or band B, the latter extending longitudinally on one face of the plate A to then pass through an aperture A near the other end of the said plate. bent backward on the other face of the plate A to form the end B, lying close to the face of the plate. 1
In order to permit a ready passage of the .Wire to the opening A, I form one face of the plate with a groove A running from the opening A to the end of the plate, and on the opposite face of the plate is formed a longitudinal groove A running from the opening A inwardly on the plate, so that the Wire can be readily passed through the opening A, as is readily understood by reference to Fig. 5, Without kinking the wire to any great extent.

The Wire is then the other side of the plate,is arranged an angular slot A. The other end B of the wire or band is passed over the back of the plate A, is then bent through the slot A to the front face of the plate, is then bent to form a transverse part B extending over the end B and to the other slot A to the back of the plate A, then passes transversely to form the part 13, extending on the back of the plate, is then bent through the slot A over the part B and then extends longitudinally as the end B The wire B thus forms a loop, which extends transversely on the plate A between the two slots A and A and engages the end B of the wire, so as to securely lock the wire in place.
The sides A and A of the plate A, forming part of the walls for the slots A and A, are bent forwardly to permit the operator to readily pass the wire through the end B to form the loop previously described.
It will be seen that by the arrangement described there is no possible "chance for the band to become accidentally unlocked when the Wire is bent and passed through the apertures and slots above described.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A bale-tie provided with a locking-plate formed with an aperture near each end, longitudinal grooves running into one of said apertures and diametrically opposed on opposite faces of the said plate, a bayonet-slot in one of its sides and an angular slot on the opposite side, and a wire having one end extending through said grooved aperture and bent or doubled back through the other aperture, the other end of said wire being bent through said slots and transversely around said plate and forming a loop engaging the doubled-up part of the wire, as and for the purpose set forth.
