Be it known that I, RAPHAEL DAMA'ro, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Astoria, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a certain 'new and useful Improvement in Honing-Machines for Safety-Razor Blades, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of machines adapted for use in conjunction with safety razors.
My invention has .for its objects primarily to provide a machine designed to Vbe employed for sharpening the blades of safety razors with facility, and wherein is employed a base-plate provided with a manually movable carrier having a number of wheels which are guided back and forth upon tracks arranged upon the base-plate having means for mounting thereon a whetstone, or a body of other material' adapted to sharpen a razor blade by movable contact therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide a demountable holder for permitting various forms of safety razor blades to be removably held for being guided so as to contact with the sharpening material. Y
Still another object of the invention is to provide upon the holder` one,.or a number of rollers which are arranged in contact with the wheels of the carrier so as to be frictionally rotated to swing the holder alternately forward and backward in an arc, whereby both surfaces of the edge of the blade will h uniformly sharpened to a perfect cuttinge e.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. honing machine of simple and eiiicient construction, and which may be readily olplerated by a person whether skilled, or nns 'lled in the practice of sharpening'safety razor blades.
A. practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a art of this specification in which similar c aracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the
bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan' thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section, partly fragmentary and'partl in detail, taken through the machine. Fiyg. 4 is an enlarged view, partly broken away and partly in section, looking down upon a form of the blade holder adapted to be used in. the machine. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section of one end of the holder taken on the line II-II of Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a viewvtaken on the line III-IH of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a v sectiontaken on the line IV-.IV of Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is a view of one form of safety razor blade adapted to be sharpened by the luse of the holder shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 9 shows another form of safety razorblade adapted to be applied to the holder shown ,in Fig. 4f.
The honing machine has a base-plate 16 which may be of any suitable shape, and upon4 the upper surface of said base-plate are two spaced guides, or tracks 11 and 12. The guides 11 and 12 are preferably in the form of grooves, each of which is provided by arranging two parallel spaced upwardly projecting anges, as 131 and 14, or the guides4 may be formed by grooving spaced parallel parts of the upper surface of the base-plate. Also 'upon the top surface of the base-plate- 10 and between the `guides 11 and 12 are two upwardly projecting spaced transverse strips, as 15 and 16, and said strips have the ends thereof bent at right angles for rigidly holding upon the base-plate a whetstone, as 17, or a body of other material adapted to. sharpen a razor blade by frictional contact therewith, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. v
Upon the base-plate 10 is a manually movable truck or carrier 18, and said can rier has a frame 19- which is preferably substantially U-shaped to provide spaced side arms 20 and 21, and a transverse arm 22 at one end of the side arms. Rotatable upon two studs, or short axles 23 and 24 held to the lower part of the side arm 20 of the frame 19 are two spaced wheels 25 and 26, and rotatable upon two studs, or shortv axles 27 and 28 held to a corresponding part of the side arm 21 of the frame are two similar spaced wheels 29 and 30. Each pair of the wheels of the carrier 18 are seated in one of the grooved guides, or tracks 11 and 12 whereby the carrier may vbe accurately moved back and forth upon the base-plate 10, and extending from thetransverse arm 22 of the frame 19 is a handle 31. In the upper edge of the side arm 20 of the frame 19 is a vertically disposed slot 32, and also in this side arm adjacent to its upper edge is a longitudinally disposed slot 33 which communicates with the slot 32. in the upl vedge is a longitudinally disposed slot 35 which communicates with the slot 34.
Serving to permit various forms of safety razor blades to be sharpened by the use of the machine, l provide a demountable holder, as 36. The holder 36 has a bar, or clamping member, as 37, which is substantially U-shaped, as viewed in cross-section, whereby a groove 38 is provided longitudinally thereof, and the free edges ofthe arms of 'said U-shaped clamping member are slightly curved toward each other so that the space therebetween is of less width than the other parts of the groove. The U- shaped clamping member 37 is removably positioned between the side arms 20 and 21 of the frame 19' of the carrier in a manner whereby the mouth of its groove is normally disposed in 'proximity to the whetstone.
, Formed upon one end of the clamping member 37 of the holder is a short shaft 39 which is revolubly disposed through the vertical slot 32 of the side arm 20 of the frame of the carrier, and said shaft is of sulicient length to extend some distance beyond the outer surface of thisside arm. ,Projecting from the opposite end of the clamping member 37 of the holder 36 is a second short shaft 40 which is rotatably disposed through the vertical slot 34'of the side arm 21 of the frame 19, and this short sha-ft extends some ydistance beyond the outer surface of the side arm 21. -This form of the U-shaped clamping member 37 is `adapted to carry preferably safety razor blades of` tapered forms, as 4 1, or forms of bladesprovided with .enlarged metal backs upon one of its marginal edges, asshown at 42.' The razor blade is applied to the holder 36 by insert-l ing its enlarged back between the arms of the iai-shaped clamping member 37- so that the cutting-edge of the blade will entend through the mouth of the groove 38. The blade is vsharpened-by being guided bachwardly and forwardly so that both surfaces of its cutting-edge will alternately contact with the whetstone, andthis is accomplished by swinging the clamping member 37 and the blade alternately in an are.
In order to swing the razor blade in this manner for being sharpened,a upon the short shaft 39 of the holder Y36 exteriorly of the frame 19 of the carrier is a removable 'roller 43 which frictionally engages the wheels 25 and 26 of said carrier,and upon the short shaft 40 of the holder also exteriorly of the frame of the carrier is a similar roller 44 which is in frictional engagement with the wheels 29 and30 of the carrier 18. Extendterasse ing from one surface of each of the rollers 43 and 44 is a sleeve 45, each of which .has .a threaded opening therethrough in whlchls a set-screw 46 for engaging the shaft of lts respective sleeve to hold the rollers against displacement. When the carrier 18 and its wheels are directed back/and forth in the grooved guides 11 and 12 of the base-plate by manually moving the handle 31 of the carrier, the rotation of the wheels of the carrier will be imparted by friction to the rollers 43 and 44. .The razor blade will then be alternately swung in an arc for moving both surfaces of its edge in contact with the whetstone, and' the blade will thereby sharpened to a perfect cutting-edge. ln this manner the machine may be conveniently utilized for sharpening safetyrazor blades by persons Whether skilled or unskilled in this practice. For the purpose of permitting the blade holder 36 to be rotatably held against accidental displacement in the vertical slots 32 and 34 of the side arms vof the frame 19 of per edge of the side arm 20 of said frame is a slide 47, and movably Adisposed upon the upper edge of the side arm 2l of the frame is a slide 48. The slides 47 and 48 are alike in formation, and each of the slides is substantially the shape of an inverted i. so that the depending arms thereof rest againstthe inner surface ofthe side arms of the frame 19 of the carrier.
Extending from thedepending arm of the slide 47 is a pin, or screw 49 which is movably guided through the longitudinal slot 33 of the side arm of the frame of the carrier, and projecting from the depending arm of the slide 48 is a pin, or screw 50 which is movably passed through the longitudinal'slot 35 of the side arm 21 of said frame. The slides 47 and 43 may thereby be directed back and forth .upon the side arms of the frame of the carrier so as to open, or close the vertical slots 32 and 34, whereby the holder 36 may be held to 'the carrier 18, or removed therefrom, and to limit the movement of the slides when moved to close said slots, upon the .inner surfaces of the side arms 2d and 21 of the frame 19 of the carrier are provided stops 51 and 52. y
In Fig. 4 is4 illustrated another form of holder, as 53, which is adapted to be employed Ain the machine for sharpening forms .of safety razor blades, as 54, having a number of holes therethrough, or forms of safety razor blades, as 55,' having a slot therein. The holder 53 has a cross-bar 56 provided with a flat surface provided with spaced knobs 58 and 59 projecting upwardly therefrom. Upon one end of the cross-bar 56 is formed a cylindrical extension, or rod loo 60, and upon the opposite end of said crossiso bar is a second cylindrical extension, or rod 61 which is on alinement with thel rod 60. The rods 60 and 61 are of sulicient lengths to extend some distance laterally beyond the side arms of the frame19 of the carrier of the machine when applied thereto, andparts of the free ends of said rods are cut away,
.or tapered, as at 62 and 63. At the ends of the rods 60 and 61 are provided catches 64 and 65, eachof whichis composed preferablyof -a -strip of spring metal having one end secured to each of the rods. The strips of metal are disposed in spaced relationpto the tapered parts of the rods, and adjacent to the free ends of saidstrips are enlarged arts, as 66 and 67. To apply one of the p orms of safety razor blades 54 or 55 to the holder .-53 the blade is disposed upon the cross-bar 56 so thatthe knobs 58 and 59 will be guided through either the holes, or

The plate 68 is approximately of the same length as the cross-bar 56, and 4when arranged upon the razor blade andover the cross-bar sa1d plate is' movably fastened` tov the cross-bar by sleeves 69 and 69* which are slidable upon l the rods 60 and 61, respectively, so as to be moved upon the cross-bar over the ends of the said plate. In mounting the holder 53 to the carrier :18 of the machine the rods -62 and 63 are guided inthe vertical slots 32 and 34 of the side arms of the frame 19 so that the crossfbar 56 will be disposed between said side arms for the cutting edge of theblade to contact with the whetstone so as to be sharpened in the'manner above described. Instead of the rollers 43 and 44 as used with the holder 36, I-prefer to yemploy -with the holder 63 forms of rollers, as 70 and 71. Each of the rollers 70 andl 71 is similar tothe rollers 43 and 44, excepting that in the wall of the opening 45 of each of, the rollers' 70 and 71 1s provided a notch 72. The openings through the rollers 70 and 71 are of suilicient diameter to permit the tapered ends of the rods and 61 to be freely guided therein. so that the enlarged parts 66 and 67 of the catches 64 and will be seated in the notches of the rollers.
