PUMP-ROD CONNECTOR.
Specication of Letters Patent.

Application led April 12, 1916. Serial No. 90,721.
manufacture consisting of a single piece of material so formed as to provide a connecting pin and locking means therefor to prevent accidental displacement of the pin.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the f0l-.
lowing description and the accompanying ldrawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a ortion ofthe wind mili-and pump rods having the connector device of this invention attached in connecting position, said figure showing in dotted lines thc initial position of the pin prelii'i'iinary to movement of the locking ele.- ment tliei'eoie into locking position. Fig'. 2 is a view in elevation ati-ight angles to the view of Fig. l, parts being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the coimcctor device alone. 4
Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the drawing. similar parts are referred to by like reference'characters. g
Referring to the drawing the numeral. 1 represents thc lower cud portion of a wind1 mill rod having the usual guide sleeve 2 at its lowcrnlost-extremity and l designates the upper cud portion o'l"the pump rod adapted for connection to the rod l. 'l`lie rods are provided as usual with suitable openings to receive the connector device which forms thc subject matter of this application. Said device consists essentially of a single piece of rod metal bent'intermediate its length to form a lingcrpicce or loop 4. One c-nd portion or side Vof the device is perfectly straight and constitutes the connecting pin` desi f nated 5 which is adapted to be inserted in registering position. rl`hc other side or end portion of the device is bent laterally from e rod openings when thelatter are in v the loop 4 and again bent to provide the pin is inserted in connecting position. This 'arm (i terminates in the angularly bent extremity 7, the latter element constituting the locking clement adapted to engage with the side ot' the rod 1 to prevent displacement of the pin from connecting position.
ln the use of the article above described, which is prete ably connected by the chain 8 to the windmill rod for the purpose of convenience it is designed to be inserted in connecting position by passing the pin 5 through the apertures of the rods 1 and 2, in thc manner shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the oti'standing arm by reason of its position will terni to gravitate to the full line position ol this figure, moving about the pin 5 as an axis, so as to bring the angularly bent extremity- 7 into 'cooperative position with the side of the pump rod opposite the side of insertion of the pin tliereinto. By reason ot' the gravitative tendency above re fcircd to thc accidental displacement of the pin from position resultingr in the disconnection o' the rods is eliminated.
vIt wi!! be observed that the portion ot' my device which is laterally bent from the loop l constitutes an abutment limiting the move ment oi the pinv 5 as when being moved to an operative. connecting position, and when said abutment performs its abutting funetion the operator may release the deviceand it will gravitat'c into locking position. Fui'- therniorc, thc provision of the linger piece and loop i all'ords a convenient means loi' graspiingr and inani|ndating the device without liability ol' soiling the fingers by grease usually provided onl parts which will be oon nccted b v thc iuvcntion, the finger piece 4 likewise bcing a loop for enabling connection with (hc chain H. the innermost portion oi' which loop is closed by contact thereof with thc pin 5.
llaving thus described my invention, what l claim asncw is:
.\s a new article ol' manufacture., a connector for pump rods and the liltc, the same comprisingasiuglc piece of rod metal, one cud ol' which constitutes aconnccting pin` the rod beingfliei'it upon itsclt' at one cnd ot" the pin wliereb'y to form a loop constituting a finger piece and the connector with ing device, laterally 5 limiting erative connecting po rod is bent to form means for connectng displacement prevent and said rod being further bent f/rom theloop to form an abutment the movement of the pin to its 01usiton, aft-er which the an arm parallel with the pin and having a laterally extending extremity constituting a looking element whereby to 'prevent displacement of the con- 1o nectorwhen disposed in operative position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE T. WOHLFORD.
