Be it known that I, THOMAS E. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonne Terre, in the county of St. Francois and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Spout Attachments for Dispensing Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in spout attachments for dispensing. apparatus and more particularly to eXtensible spouts for use in connection with liquid dispensing apparatus.
The object of the invention is to provide an extensible and contractible spout of this character for use in filling vessels of different heights or vessels disposed at varying points in relation to the spout proper to avoid splashing of the filling liquid;
Another object is to provide simple and quickly actuated means for securing the eX- tension member of the spout in adjusted position.
Another object isl to provide improved means for preventing the separation and loss of the extension member.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

Figure l represents a side elevation of a fluid supply pipe equipped with this improved attachment, the lever being shown released to permit the adjustment of the movable member;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the attachment detached with the lever in locked position;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line. 3-3 of Fig. l;
Fig. l is a similar view on line 4.-4 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated, the 'improved eXtensible spout constituting this invention is shown applied to a supply pipe or spout S which may be connected with any suitable source, (not shown).
The attachment constituting the invention comprises two telescopically engaged members shown in the form of an inner tube or pipe l externally threaded at oneend for engagement with the spout S'of the supply, whereby said pipe is held in fixed `engagement with said spout S, which is internally threaded to'receive the pipe l although it may be connected therewith in any other suitable or desired manner.
.This pipe l is-provided at its free end with a transversely extending pin or rod.
2 to which the eXtensible member 3 of the attachment is designed to be connected to prevent its separation 'therefrom and consequent loss, as will be hereinafter more fully described.V
Telescopically engaged with the pipe l is the extension member 3 here shown in the form of a tube having a longitudinally' eX- tending slitct in its inner or pipe engaging end and which is designed to provide for the transverse expansion and contraction of said tube 3 to adapt it for clamping engagement with the pipe l.k A transversely split ,clamp` ing band or ring 5 encircles the split end of the tube 3 and is provided with laterally eX- tending apertured ears or lugs 6 and 7 shown arranged 'on opposite sides of the slit 4L in the tube 3, said band being connected 'with` the tube by a rivet 8` extending transversely through said band and the tube at. a point diametrically opposite the lugs 6 and 7 whereby the band is held in position on the tube and yet the clamping action thereof is not interfered with. l
Disposed between the band rand the tube .3 are spacing elements 5ZL and 5b in the form of arcuate strips arranged one over they other, and with their ends extending toward the lugs of the band 5 vand spaced therefrom, the inner strip'a beinglonger'than theouter strip 5b. vThe 'strips 5a and '5b which are shown comparatively thin'relative to the band 5 afford a fulcrum for the band and the space between the free ends of the strips and the free ends of the band 5 affords a greater range of clamping movement for said band, the length of the strips being varied to cause a graduall bending of the band ends when drawn together, and'to provide a plurality of binding or gripping points for the band.
A clamp actuating lever 9 is shown engaged with the apertured lugs 6 and 7 having its engaging end bifurcated with the furcations 10 and ll thereof spaced apart and Vring 5 on opposite sides of the lugs Vwith the clamping ring .5.
with arranged on the outer faces of the lugs 6 and 7, being connected therewith by a pivot pin or fulcrum 12 which extends through the furcations of the lever and through the apertured lugs 6 and 7, thus connecting the lever The furcations 10 and 11 of the leverphave laterally extending clamping fingers 13 and 14 provided with inner cam faces 15 and 16 which are designed when the lever is swung in one direction for engaging the outer faces of the lugs 6 and 7 and thereby forcing said lugs toward each other, thus contracting the split end of the tube 3, bindingly engaging it with the pipe 1, and thereby connecting said pipe 1 and tube 3 in adjusted position.
rlherouter ends or edges of the clamping lingers 13 and 1l are curved, and when the Ylever 9 isrswung downwardly the free ends of these lingers engage the outer face of the 6 and 7 and thereby limit the inward swinging move ment of the lever, and together with the cam faces of lsaid fingers hold said lever in operative locking position, as is shown lclearly in Fig. 4. The cam faces 15 and 16 of the ` fingers 13 and 14 are .prefere bly formed by converging Vthe inner faces of said fingers from their inner toward their outer ends, so that when the lever is swung downwardly :or inwardly into locking position, these inclined faces gradually force the lugs 6 and 7 toward each other and are so proportioned and arranged that when' the outer edges of the free ends of said fingers engage lthe ring 5 at the base of the lugs, said lugs will be in their extreme .closed position.
rlhe tube .3 has a transversely extending pin or rod 17 arranged at its free outer end with which a connecting member 13 for holding the tube 3 against separation from the pipe A1 is engaged. rl`his connecting member 18 is preferably made in the form -of a 'U-shaped loop, the cross bar 19 of which extends over the transversely arranged pin or rod 2 in the lower end of the pipe 1, and the free ends of the arms of said member y13 are engaged with the pin 17 of theJ tube '3 so that said tube 3 may be moved freely on the pipe 1 but will be prevented from being entirely separated therefrom by said loop 18, said loop being of a length substantially corresponding tothe length of the tube 3.
ln the use of this Aattachment, the threaded pip-e 1 and tube 3 are telescopically engaged the loop 18 connecting the pins 2 and 17 thereof, whereby they are held against separation. The free end of the pipe 1 is then connected withthe spout 8 of the source of supply in connection with which the device is to be used, being threaded into said spout or otherwise suitably connected ,therewith, and when it is desired to dispense the material supplied through said spout S, the

After this tube 3 has been adjusted as desired, Athe llever 9 lis swung downwardly, causing the `cam faces of the clamping `lingers 13 and v111 to forcibly engage the lugs 6 and 7 of the clamping ring and contract said rin-g, thereby contracting the split end 4of the tube 3 land bindingly engaging it with the pipe 1, the lever9 being moved downwardly to its extreme lower position with the free ends of the fingers engaged with the ring 5, in which position it will remain until manually released.

3. ln a device of the class described, the combination of two tubular telescopically engaged members, each having a transversely extending pin at its lower end, a C onnector for said members in the form of a U-shaped loop, the crossbar of which passes over the pin of one member and the free ends of the arms thereof being engaged with the pin of the other member to provide for the longitudinal movement of said members relatively to each other and yet prevent the separation thereof, and means for securing said members in adjusted position.
Z1. 1n an attachment yof the class described, the combination `of telescopically engaged tubular members, the outer member being longitudinally slit, lugs extending laterally from said slit members on opposite edges of the slit therein, a lever having ka bifucated end with the furcations thereof spanning the slit therein,
said lugs and disposed on the outer faces thereof, said furcations being pivotally engaged with said lugs, laterally extending lingers carried by said furcations and hav-y ing their inner faces converging toward their free ends to form cams for forcing the lugs toward each other on the swinging of said lever in one direction, the free ends of said fingers being positioned to engage the outer face of the member when the lever is swung into closed position .for locking the said lever in said position.

The combination of telescoping members, the outer member being slit longitudinally at one end, a split clamping ring encircling the slit e-nd of said member, said ring having laterally extending apertured lugs at the terminals thereof, a spacing element arranged between said ring and said slit niemeer with its ends spaced from the vends of said ring, and a lever having a bifurcated end with the furcations thereof disposed on the outer faces of said lugs and provided with cams for forcing said lugs toward each other when the lever is swung Copies of lbeing pivotally in one direction, the furcations of said lever connected with said lugs.
6. The combination of telescoping members, the outer member being slit longitudi nally at one end, a split clamping ring encircling the slit end of said member, said ring having laterally extending apertured lugs at the terminals thereof, a plurality of superposed spacing strips arranged between said ring and slit member, said strips having their ends spaced from the ends of said ring, with the terminals of one strip spaced from the terminals of the other strip to afford a fulcrum for the ring and provide for a gradual clamping engagement of the ring, the outer strip being shorter than the inner.
