' ENTTE STATS PATENT WILSON W. WILT, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
WEEDER.
Application filed May 24, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILsoN l/V. VVILT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVeeders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in weeders, and the object thereof is the pro duction of a cheap, efficient device of the class mentioned and described, one that requires a minimum of exertion for effective operation thereof.
On the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the complete weeder; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar members and parts of members throughout the several. views and figures on the drawings.
On the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 designate parallel, spaced frame members, preferably of flat metal, to which are ri idly riveted or welded the spacers 3 and 4:.
The numeral 5 designates a handle, of wood or metal, secured to the bent frame members 8 and 9, of members 1 and 2, by the bolts 6 and 7.
The numerals 10 and 11 designate opposed jaws, formed preferably of flat resilient metal or spring steel, and secured to the lower ends of the frame members 1 and 2 by rivets, or welding, or in any other suitable manner. Normally, they are slightly bent toward each other at their points and are adapted to remain open, normally, and to spring open when no force is used to keep them closed at their points.
The numerals 12 and 13 designate L shaped aw brackets rigidly secured to the opposed aw surfaces of the jaws 11 and 10, respectively, and extending laterally therefrom at substantially right angles thereto. Brackets 12 and 13 may be riveted or welded to said jaws 11 and 10, respectively, are substantially parallel with each other, and the outer extremity of each bracket extends to a point adjacent the opposite jaw.
The numeral 14 designates a aw and frame spacing member formed preferably in a hollow rectangular shape and rigidly secured to and between the jaws 10 and 11 and the frame members 1 and 2, by rivets, or otherwise.
The numerals 15 and 16 designate jaw Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1917.
Serial No. 30,035.
bracket pins carried in the outer ends of the brackets 12 and 13, respectively, and adapted to carry the jaw actuating rods 17 and 18, havlng their outer ends pivoted thereon.
Numeral 19 designates a lever rod, or connection, formed of fiat metal preferably, the outer end of which carries the inner ends of jaw rods 17 and 18 pivotally secured thereto by the pin 20 which penetrates said three members.
The numeral 21 designates an adjustment opening within which the pin 20 mav be arranged to draw the points of the jaws 10 and 11 somewhat closer together.
The numerals 24C and 25 designate hand levers carried by the l. shaped brackets 27 and 26 which are rigidly secured to the frame members 2 and 1, respectively, and upon which they are pivotally operable on the pins 28 and 29 carried, respectively, by the brackets 27 and 26. i I i The numeral. 30 designates a hand lever pin penetrating the levers 2 1 and and the upper end of the rod 19, in pivotal relation therewith, and upon which are mounted the spacers 31 and 32.
Normally the resiliency of the jaws 10 and 11, exerting an. outward force or pressure, holds the levers 24 and 25 retracted, from which position they may be manually operated, or drawn, toward the handle 5, thereby moving the points of the jaws 10 and 11 toward each other or closing same tightly, according to the exertion made.
By the use of the long, independent jaw brackets 12 and 13 a very long leverage is obtained thereon, thereby enabling a closure of the jaw points with a minimum of exertion on the hand levers 2 1 and 25, and there: by enabling long continued use of the weeder without great fatigue to the operator thereof.
The hand levers 2 1 and 25 are independently operable, whereby the lever connection 19 may be retracted by either one of said levers, or by both simultaneously.
I claim,
1. The combination, in a weeder, of the resilient self opening jaws provided with independent brackets, and means connected with said brackets for actuating and forcing the jaws together.
2. The combination, in a weeder, of resilient self opening jaws provided with independent brackets, each of said. brackets being rigidly secured to a jaw and projecting laterally therefrom to a point adjacent the opposite jaw, and means connected with said brackets for actuating and forcing the jaws together.
3. The combination, in a weeder, of resilient self opening jaws provided with independent laterally projecting brackets, each of said brackets projecting to a point adjacent the opposite jaw, and manually operable means connected with said brackets for actuating and forcing the jaws together.
4;. The combination, in a weeder, of resilient opposed jaws normally open and convergent, each of said jaws being provided with a laterally projecting bracket, and means connected with said brackets for actuating and forcing the jaws together.
5. The combination, in a weeder, of a frame having spaced and opposed end members, resilient jaws rigidly secured to said frame end members and projecting therefrom in a normally open state, said jaws being provided with laterallyprojecting brackets, and means for closing said'jaws said means comprising hand levers pivotally mounted upon said frame, and actuating rods connecting said levers with said jaw brackets.
6. The combination, in a weeder, 0f the resilient self opening jaws each of which is provided with a bracket, and means for actuating and forcing said jaws together, said means comprising a retractable lever connection, bracket rods connecting said brackets with said lever connection, and means for retracting said lever connection.
7. The combination, in a weeder, of the resilient self opening jaws each of which is provided with a bracket, and means for actuating and forcing said jaws together, said means comprising independently operable hand levers, and means, connecting said hand levers with said jaw brackets whereby said jaws may be actuated by either of said levers or by both simultaneously.
8. The combination of the resilient self opening bracketed jaws of a weeder; and meansconnected with the jaw brackets for forcing the jaws together.
In witness whereof I have hereunto aflixed my signature this 22d day of May,
WILSON W. WILT.
