UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW NELSON, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
SHEARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shears; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to shears, and has for an object to provide power shears of improved construction and increased leverage.
A further object of the invention is to provide in power shears cogged gears for returning the jaws to open position but without employing such cogs for closing the jaws to cutting positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved operating means for actuating the aws and levers.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the jaws and levers with one of the plates removed and with the cylinder shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a view in edge elevation as indicated by arrow 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cutting jaw having a cutting edge arranged at right angles to the edge as shown at Figs. 1 and 2.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The shear which forms the subject-matter of this application is intended for heavy shearing such for instance as cutting off stay bolts and the like, and is intended to be operated by fluid pressure such as steam, compressed air or the like, and to be handled by a derrick or other mechanical means. The device consists of levers 1.0 and 11 crossed as indicated and fulcrumed upon pintles 12 and 13 respectively. The pintles 13 are secured at their opposite ends to plates 14 and 15, between which the levers operate and the levers themselves are provided at their extremities located between the plates with gear cogs 16. Fulcrumed also between the plates 14 and 15 are jaws Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 23, 1909.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
Serial No. 534,694.
It will also be noted that the gear cogs 21 are not arranged upon an arc with the pintles 19 and 20 as a center. \Vhile the gear cogs 16 and 21 are as noted not struck on arcs, with their centers at the pivotal centers of the members, they are so arranged that upon returning motion to open the jaws 17 and 18, the gear cogs engage to perform this function, while the closing or shearing motion given to the j: ws does not depend upon the gear cogs for such action.
As shown at Figs. 1 and 2 the cutting edges 22 are arranged parallel with the planes of the plates 1 1 and 15. At Fig. 3 a form of jaw is shown having the cutting edge 22 arranged at right angles to the plane of the plates 14 and 15. It is apparent that either form of jaw is the equivalent of the other so far as the mechanical principles are concerned, but that the arrangement of thecntting face is dependent upon the work to which it is to be put.
As the shear is intended to be suspended and moved by a derrick or other mechanical means the plates 14 and 15 are provided with ears 23 having holes 24: for connection with the derrick and by which the shear may be lifted.
For operating the shear a cylinder 25 is rigidly secured to the plates 14 and 15, and a piston 26 mounted to reciprocate therein having a piston rod 27 connected with a cross head 28 to which are pivoted links 29 and 30 being also pivoted as at 31 to the extremities of the levers 10 and 11. A pipe 32 is provided to permit the introduction of fluid under pressure, and a spring 33 is located within the cylinder adapted to return the shear to open position when fluid pressure is removed.
As shown in full lines at Fig. 1 the shear is in open position and held yieldingly so by the spring 33. When fluid under pressure is admitted through the pipe 32 into the cylinder 35 the piston 26 moves to dotted position moving therewith the piston rod 27 and the other parts of the device are also moved to dotted position to close the cutting edges of the jaws 17 and 18 as indicated in dotted lines.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, spaced side plates, jaw members pivoted between the plates, crossed handle members pivoted between the plates and intergearedv with the jaw members in such manner that when the handles are spreadapart the jaws are closed and means located between the handles for spreading the handles.
2. In a device of the class described, spaced side plates, jaw members pivoted between the side plates, handle members pivoted between the side plates and intergeared with the jaw members, a cylinder rigidly secured to the side plates, a piston slidable in the cylinder and links connecting the piston with the handle members in. such manner that the handles are spread apart as the piston moves outwardly in the cylinder.
3. In a device of the class described, spaced side plates, jaw members pivoted between the side plates and provided with gear teeth formed upon an arc eccentric to the pivoting of the jaw members, lever mem- 'bers pivoted between the side plates and spaced side plates, jaw members pivoted dle members pivoted between the jaws and provided with gear teeth arranged upon an arc eccentric to the pivoting of such handle members and intergeared with the teeth of the jaw members, a cylinder carried rigidly by the side plates, a piston slidably mount ed in the cylinder and means connecting the piston with the handle members whereby an outward movement of the piston closes the jaw members.
5. In a device of the class described, spaced side plates, jaw members pivoted between the side plates, gear teeth formed upon the jaw members arranged upon an arc eccentric to the pivoting of said jaw members, crossed handle members pivoted between the side plates and provided with gear teeth arranged upon an arc eccentric to the pivoting of said jaw members and intergeared with the teeth of the jaw members and mechanical means carried by the side plates for expanding the handle members.
in presence of two witnesses.
