Description

'D.P.SULOUFR Improvemeht in Clothes Washers.
N0. 121,217. Patented Nov-21,1871,
@Emtur: Q
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID P. SULOUFF, OF MILTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-WASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,217, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID P. SULOUFF, of Milton, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Washer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section.
This invention relates to a Washer intended to go inside a wash-boiler and to support the clothes to be washed, holding them above the water, and being provided with pipes, one at each end, havin g rose-heads, through which water is forced by steam-pressure, falling from the rose-heads in jets on all parts of the clothes.
Referring to the drawing, the top of the washer consists of a diaphragm, fitting accurately the inside of the boiler and held above the waterline in the same by means of a flange, 1), proi ecting downward from the edge of the diaphragm and resting on the bottom of the boiler. The sides 0 and ends (I of the diaphragm slope inward and downward, forming a concavity, at the bot tom of which is a slot, 6. Attached to the under side of the diaphragm, beneath the slot 6, are shelves f, sloping to each side downward from a central ridge. In the flange b may be holes 9 to let the dead-water pass through. Corrugated slats h pass from side to side of the diaphragm for the clothes to rest on, preventing them from packing around the slot 6 and from scorching in case the boiler gets dry.
When the clothes are laid on the slats h, the washer filled with Water as far as the shelves f, the cover put on the boiler, and heat applied thereto, the steam generated soon forces the water in two currents up through the pipes i, which spring from the ends of the diaphragm. The shelves f act as a trap to prevent the Water from being forced up through the slot 6. The water falls in jets through the rose-hcadsj on all parts of the clothes, and soaks through the clothes and runs down the sides 0 and ends d, and through the slot aback to the water-space, thus cleansing the clothes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The concave diaphragm c d, having the flange 1) and slot 6, and combined with the shelves f, slats h, pipes i, and rose-heads j, as specified.
