To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM C. Conn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate-Bars for Marine and Stationary Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in grate bars for marine and stationary boilers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of grate bars and to provide a simple, practical and efiicient grate bar, of strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction adapted to afford an increased draft and capable .of deflecting the fire tools to avoid breaking the grate bars.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grate bar of this character having Pl'OJGCtlODS or lugs provided with a relatively sharp downward taper and rounded at the side and end edges so as to tend to drop ashes as well as deflect the fire tools.
W'ith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described,illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim here to appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure l is a plan view of a double grate bar constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is an end elevation.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts inthe several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention. the grate bar which may be made either single or double, when double comprises in its construction a pair of parallel longitudinal bars or body portions 1 connected by transverse end bars or members 2, and also by an intermediate centrally arranged connecting member 3. The end bars or members 2 may be constructed of any suitable exterior configuration to suit requirements and as shown are provided with vertical projecting enlargements 4t and form horizontal lower faces or shoulders 5 which are adapted to rest upon suitable supports. The lugs or enlargements 4 provide intervening end recesses 6. 'Each of the longitudinal bars or body portions 1 is provided at opposite sides with laterally projecting lugs] which as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing are provided with a relatively sharp downward taper forming relatively wide intervening recesses 8 and adapted to increase the draft. The lugs are rounded at their upper faces and sideedges to present a transversely curved convex upper face 9 and the outer ends of the lugs are rounded at 10 forming rounded outer vertical end faces. The rounding of the lugs at both the outer vertical end faces and the upper faces tends to deflect the fire tools to prevent breaking of the grate bars and they also serve to cause the lugs to tend to drop the ashes. The lugs of the parallel bars or body portions are arranged in staggered relation,
each bar or body portion having its lugs located opposite the spaces or intervals between the lugs of the other bar or body portion.
The double grate bars are maintained in spaced relation and are also connected and reinforced by the transverse connecting members 3 which are composed of straight side sections 11 arranged in different transverse planes and connected by a diagonally disposed central portion 12 and provided with diagonally extending terminal portions 13 having flat end faces 14. The longitudinal bars 1 are provided in their upper faces with. grooves 15 extending longitudinally of the grate bars.
l/Vhat is claimed is A grate bar of the class described including spaced parallel bars or body portions provided at intervals with laterally projecting lugs arranged in staggered relation and having rounded top and outer end faces and tapered downwardly to a relatively sharp lower edge and a transverse connecting portion formed integral with the bars or body portions and consisting of straight end sections arranged in different transverse planes and connected by a diagonally disposed central portion, said end sections having rever'sely extending diagonally disposed in presence of two outer terminals projecting beyond the lugs and having flat end faces.
