STAcx, citi zen of the United States,-resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of-Mim nesota, have invented certain new. and use-.
ful Improvements in Incinerators, of'which the following. is a. specification.
ator, it has sometimes happened that afper-f son has accidentally fallen through the opening into the incinerating. chamber.
The object of my invention is to provide a form ofhopper which will-be closed at the bottom. during the Operation of dump ing the load, and may be opened to dis-.
charge. its. contents into. the incinerating. chamber after the opening leading. to. the
hopper has been closed.
My invention consists generallyin vari-' ous constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter' described and i particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings. forming part of. this specification,
m-m of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, 2 represents the wall of refuse material is discharged. These openings are provided with suitable covers 10. Beneath these openings I provide hoppers 11 and 11*, each divided vertically into independent sections hinged at 12 on suitable supporting fianges 13. These hopper sections are adapted to swing apart at their lower ends to allow the material therein.
to slide down by gravity through openings 14 in the top of the combustion chamber of the incinerator. Normally the hop- Figure 1 is a" longitudinal, vertical, sectional view of an. incinerator embodying. my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionalview on the line pers will be; closed zandientrance to the'combustlon chamber prevented. Any suitable means may be provided for separating the hopper sections, but I preferto. provide a shaft 15' having, a. worm wheel16 meshing. with a. worm 17-011' an',operating rod 18.. A belt 19,connects the shaft. 15 with a-shaft 20. .The shaft .20 has a crank arm 21; connected-by a link 22 with a section of thehopper 11?. Thelshaftllo. has a crank 23Jconnected by a link 24:; with the other,

section of the hopper 11. At theopposite end ofthe combustion chamber is a horizon tal shaft 25' operatedthroughthe medium of a worm rod'corresponding'to the one described. and which Iwill indicate by the same referencenumeral, with. the addition of the exponent a; This shaft 25 has a beltfconnection.19 fwith a shaft 20 located between.thehoppersand provided with a crank 21 -that is. connected with one section of thehopper 11 by a link 22 and a shaft 25 has a crank 26 connected by a link 2 1*, withxthe other section of the hop per. 11. When the. rods 18, and 18 are operated, the shafts 15 and 25 will be rocked and thesections of the hopper separated to allow its contents to be discharged by gravity into the incinerating chamber beneath. Theoperating rod 18 is diagonally mounted in the platform with respect to the opposite rod 18, one rod being on one side of the platform and the other rod on the opposite side, as indicated by the drawing, This will bedone after the openings 9 are closed by the placing of the covers 10 thereon. From-this construction it will follow that there will be no possibility of a person falling into the incinerator with the garbage or during the operation of dumping the refuse into the incinerator 7 Any suitable means may be provided for connecting the hopper sections with the links of the operating mechanism, but I prefer to provide brackets 27 formed on the lower portions of the outerwalls of the hopper sections. These brackets have under surfaces which are adapted to cover the openings 14 leading to the combustion chamber and are adapted to slide over the top of the combustion chamber to expose fully the openings from the hoppers into the chamber.
The arrangement of the hopper sections with converging lower walls and the mechanism for operating these sections assures the rapid discharge of the contents of the hopper, 'forno; matter; how sticky or Wet the refuse materialmay be, thehopper sec tions may be Worked back and forth against .one another to dislodge any portion of the refiise, which may be clinging to thehopper wals.-: In various Ways the details of construction herein shown and described may be invention. p
