G. H.PETERS AND R. E. SHOARS.
ASH SIFTER.'
APPLICATION FILED NOV. IB, 1918- Ptendsept. 20,1921;
Fi/.gl 3a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GUSTAV H. PETERS AND RAYMOND E. SHQARS, OF MILWAUKEE, 'WISCONSINh AsH-smrnreh i Specification of Letters Patent. VPatented Sept. 20, 1921.
Application led'November 18, 1918. Serial No. 263,006.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it .known4 that uwe, GUSTAV H. PETERS, a subject of Germany, and RAYMOND E. SHoARs, a citizen of the United- States, and residents of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash- Sifters, of which the following is a description,.reference being had to the accompanying drawings which are a part of this speciiication.
The invention relates to ash sifters and is fully described and explained in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a vertical sectional view through the device embod ing the invention taken on the line 1-1 of lyig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the' numeral 4 designates a feeding hopper having inclined walls 5 and a bottom opening 6 which is in communication with aninclined chute 7 having side walls 8, top wall 9 and an open bottom for a greater portion of its length covered by a screen 10 removably mounted on inturned flanges 8 on the side walls 8, the end of the chute terminating in Yan enlarged spout or discharge opening 11.
The bottom opening 6 is normally closed by means of a flat plate valve 12 hingedly connected at one side to one of the inclined walls 5 and normally held in closing positionby means of an arm 13 carrying a weight 14 at its outer end. Y
Hingedly secured to each side wall 8 of the chute 7 by a hinge plate 15 is a side plate 15 and one end of each plate is removably secured to an inclined end wall 16 by means of a bolt 17. An end plate 18 is hingedly secured to the upper end wall 19 of the chute 7 andhas flanged sides 18 removably secured to the side plates 15 by bolts 20. The plates 15 and 18 and end wall 16 form a delivery hopper 21.
The plate 18 is provided with an outwardly extending flange 22 and the end wall 16 with a similar flange 23 so that an ashk 11 are provided with flanges 27 similar to the flanges 22 and 23 so that a coal receptacle 28 having flanged guideways 29, similar to the guideways 25, may slidably engage the flanges 27 to removably connect the receptacle 28 to the endof the spout 11. The device is held off the floor or other support so that the coal and ash receptacles maybe readily removed by means of legs 30 and 31. The legs 3() are pivotally secured at their Lipper' ends to the end walls of the hopper 4 by bolts 30 so that they may be folded up against the side of the chute 7 when not in luse and when in use they are held in upright position by c means of hooked lugs 32 secured to the end plate 18 and engageable with locking bolts 33 which are mounted in slots 34 in the legs 30. The legs-31 are pivotally secured to the side walls 8 by bolts 35 so that' they may be folded up against the side of the chute when not in use and when in use they are held in upright position vby means of hooked lugs 36 secured to said walls 8 and engageable with locking bolts 37 which are mounted in slots 38 in the legs 31.
With the construction above described the material to be sifted is dumped into the feeding hopper 4 and passes down through the opening 6 and due to its weight opens the valve 12.V It then rolls or slides along the screened bottom of the chute 7 and the finer soy screen 10 into the hopper 21 and receptacle 24 while the larger particles such as the unburnt coal pass down the chute 7 through the spout 11 and into vthe receptacle 28.
' The plate valve 12 and tight joints between the various parts of the device prevent the escape of dust from the device.
Owing to the fact that the receptacles 24 and 28 are removably secured to the device and that the side plates 15, end plate 18 and legs 30 and 31 are provided with hinged joints, the device may be folded up into compact form for shipping or storing.
What we claim as our invention is:
1.'A closed ash sifter, comprising an inclined casing having foldable side and end walls and an open bottom portion, end portions of the casing also being open, an inclined screen mounted in the casing, a gated hopper connected to the casing wall forming one ofthe end openings, a cinder receptacle removably connected to the casing wall form- -ing the otherl end opening, an ash'receptacle removably connected to the casing and closingthe bottom opening, and foldable` legs for supporting the casing and the receptacles.
2. A closed ash sifter, comprising an inclned casingV having foldable side and end Walls and an open bottom portion, end portions of the casing also being open, a hopper mounted on the upper openl end of the easing and having a gate for normally closing the adjacent casing end opening,l a cinder receptacle removably connected to the lower end of the casing and closing the lower end opening7 an ash receptacle removably connected to the casing and closingV the bottom opening, supporting legspivotally connected to the opposite sides of the casing, and` means for locking the legs in supporting position.
In testimony whereof, We affix our signatures. v
GUSTAV H. PETERS. RAYMOND E. SHOARS.
