Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY MITCHELL CoATs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Ash-Separator and Residue-Ejecter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in an ash separator in which a circular disk shaped screen revolves inside a circular receptacle or drum, by means of a shaft attached to sieve which projects through and is sus ended from the cover of the drum and rotate by an attached handle.
The objects of my improvements are first, to provide a substantial ash separator which will Work on the ground or fit on a barrel or ash can, and can be madein various sizes to sift small or large quantities of ashes. Second, to afiord facilities for separating ashes from coal and ejecting the coal into a scuttle or pan by way of a door and chute, the operation requiring no handling other than the turning of a handle, and third; to provide an ash separator within which ashes can be sifted indoors or outdoors without any dust arising therefrom. I attain these obj ects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which.
Figure. 1 is a plan of the entire sifter; 2 is a sectional elevation on lines one and one, (1 & 1) Fig. 1. Fig. 3. is a view of the sifter showing the ashes all thoroughly sifted and the good coal ready to be discharged by simply opening the sliding-door and giving the handle a few turns.

The casing A with flange B its cover C with hinges D and the door E and chute F, constitute the circular receptacle which is made of metal. One half of the cover C to one inch pastthe center is fastened to a flange on the casings A top edge. The other half of cover 0 is hinged D and opens to receive the ashes to be sifted. The door E is a vertical sliding door which slides in slots of chute F which is fastened under the discharge opening in casing A. The sieve G is a circular conically shaped mesh with metal edging H fastened thereon which makes a strong true circular edging for the mesh and at the top on center of the mesh a ferrule I is securely fastened. The shaft K which is fastened to the cross bar J at L passes through the mesh G, the ferrule I and the cover C. The cross bar J is fastened to the undersides of the mesh edging H. The mesh G is rotated by the handle O which is securely fastened to the shaft K at L which is suspended on the cover C by means of a pin M resting on washer N resting on cover C.
In operating my ash sifter the ashes are thrown in the opening at top by lifting hinged cover 0 and a few turns of the handle 0 either forward or backward or continuously around will sift the ashes from the coal into a receptacle which the ash separator is located upon, and by lifting the sliding door "13 and a few more turns of the handle 0 will discharge the good coals into any receptacle placed under the chute What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.-
In an ash separator, the combination of a cylindrical casing, a disk shaped circular screen adapted to rotate within said casing, a fixed cover having a hinged section on the casing, a shaft fixed at the center of said screen, and rotatably suspended from said cover, a discharge opening in the casing above the screen'and means for rotating said screen substantially as described.
