To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER LAU- TERBAOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor, Steam, and HotlVater Generators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vapor, steam and hot-water generators, and has for its object .to provide a generator which is simple in construction, easily operated, and by means of which the maximum amount of heat can be produced from the fuel consumed.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1, two of the draft slides, or dampers, being removed to show the draft openings in the base. Fig. 3 is a section on the line XX of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a plan view of Fig. 1 partly in section on the line YY, and having the smoke hood removed. F 5 is aside elevation of the base, partly broken away, showing the position of the grate bars, and having two of the gratebar plates removed to show the opening through which the grate-bars are inserted or removed. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of one of the generator sections taken on the line ZZ of Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates the front section of the genorator, 2 the rear section, and 3, the intermediate sections. In the present instance I have shown the generator composed of four sections, but it is obvious any desired number may be employed. The front and rear sections 1 and 2, respectively, are formed with flat outer surfaces, the front section 1 being provided with a projection 4 for the water gage 5 and try cocks 6, and is provided with a fire door 7. The walls of the intermediate sections 3, as well as the inner walls of the front and rear sections 1 and 2, respectively, taper from the top down to the crown sheet or that part directly above the fire box, with the exception of the central extensions 8 Specification of Letters Patent.

which are straight vertically and impinge against each other when the sections are bolted together and form a central partition thereby providing two ducts, or passages 9 for the heat and gases. The side walls of the said inner and outer surfaces of the front and rear sections 1 and 2, and the inner sec tions 3, are provided with corrugations, or extensions, 10 between the central extension 8 and their outer ends, which serve to increase the fire surface and to strengthen the side walls of said sections. To further strengthen these side walls, cast iron stays 11 are placed at intervals therein. The sections 1, 2 and 3 are provided with lugs 12, top and bottom, for the reception of bolts to hold said sections together, and push-nipple openings 13 at the bottom forming an inlet for the water, and for the return water, or water of condensation, and openings 14: at the top through which the vapor, steam or hot water passes to the outlet 15, to which the pipe leading to the radiators (not shown) is connected. Between the sections 1, 2 and 3 at the top thereof are the smoke or flue openings 16 for the escape of the smoke and expended gases from the coal, artificial or natural gas, or other fuel, the said flue openings 16 each being provided with a damper or slide 17 connected to the rods 18 projecting through the smoke hoods 19 which rest over said openings 16 and have communication with the smoke box 20. Each rod 18 is connected to a separate and independent set of dampers or slides 17. These dampers or slides 17 can be set to reduce the "openings 16 to any desired amount, thereby checkin the velocity and volume of the escaping gases from the fire and increasing the etliciency of the generator. The smoke hoods 19 not only carry the smoke and expended gases from the fire to the smoke box 20, but by confining the heat therein above the generator sections superheat the vapor and steam and add additional heat to the water when the generator is used in connection with a hot-water heating apparatus. It will be seen that by having the side walls of the generator sections tapered, as heretofore described, there will be a free and uninterrupted flow of the vapor or steam to the top of the sections and thence to the outlets, also permits a free and uninterrupted rising of the steam bubbles generated at the crown sheet and sides of the several sections, and the sections being wider apart at the crown sheet, or just above the fire, and the space therebetween becoming narrower at the top, the sections and the water contained therein get the full benefit of the heat from the fire. The front section 1 is also provided with an opening 21 for the safety valve (not shown).
The base which forms the ash-pit 22, and upon which the generator sections rest, is formed of a front plate 23 to which are hinged the clinker door 24 and ash-pit door 25, a rear plate 26, and two side plates 27 and 28. The side plate 27 is provided with grate bar lugs 29 to receive the ends of the grate-bars 30, air or draft openings 31, and slides 35 connected to the rod 32 for opening or closing said openings 31. The side plate 28 is directly opposite the plate 27 and is provided with openings 33 through which the grate-bars 30 are inserted or removed, and grate-bar plates 341- bolted thereto and supporting the ends of the grate bars 30 which project out far enough; and are adapted, to receive the shaker. It will be seen that by having the grate formed of a number of independent grate bars the coals can be agitated at any point which may require shaking. The plates forming the said base may be bolted or otherwise secured together.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. A generator comprising a front section having a flat outer surface and a straight vertical projection at the center of the inner surface, said inner surface tapering vertically between said central projection and the outer edges, a rear section having a flat outer surface and a straight vertical projection at the center of the inner surface, said inner surface tapering vertically between said central projection and the outer edges, one or more intermediate sections each surface of which is provided with a central vertical projection and the surface between said vertical projections and the outer edges being tapered vertically.
2. A generator comprising a front section having a flat outer surface and a tapering inner surface, a rear section having a flat outer surface and a tapering inner surface, one or more intermediate sections having both surfaces thereof tapering vertically,,
and a flue covering the space between each section at the top thereof and a damper adapted to be operated to open and close said space.
3. A generator comprising a front and a rear section each having a tapering inner wall provided with a straight vertical central projection and between said central projection and the outer edges said inner walls are tapered vertically and provided with corrugations or projections, one or more 1ntermediate sections each having a central vertical projection. and tapering walls between said central projection and the outer edges provided with corrugations or projections, slides covering the spaces between said sections, and rods connecting said slides for operating same.

A generator comprising a front section having a flat outer surface and a tapering inner surface, a rear section having a flat outer surface and a tapering inner surface, one or more intermediate sections having both surfaces tapering above the fire box, slides for the openings between said sections, a smoke hood at the top of said sections at each side thereof covering said openings and having outlets for the smoke.
5. A generator comprising a plurality of sections each having an inlet and an outlet, a base upon which said sections rest and forming an ash-pit, said base having openings in one side for the insertion and removal of the grate bars, a plate secured over each of said openings and having recesses in their upper ends, a separate grate bar under each section having one end mounted in one side of the base and the other end resting in and projecting beyond the recess in said plate, a separate inlet under each section, and slides for opening and closing said draft inlets.
6. A generator having a plurality of sec tions the abutting walls of which taper from the top down to the fire boX and each provided with an inlet and an outlet, smoke hoods at the top of said sections, dampers at the top of each section to control the openings leading to the smoke box, a base upon which said sections rest, a separate grate bar mounted in said base under each section and having one end projecting therefrom, a separate draft opening under each grate-bar, and slides for regulating the said draft openings.
