BOX-FASTENEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Application filed May 20, 1916. Serial No. 98,839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, STEPHEN E. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Box-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a fastener adapted to be applied to the side wall of the body portion of a box, and to the depending flange of a lid, for holding these parts assembled.
The invention aims to provide a device of this type which may be fastened at trifling expense, and to provide a structure of the sort hereinafter described which may readily be connected with a box, without the use of tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of tongue on the lid of the box, the tongue being so constructed that the depending flange of the lid will be spaced and sustained with respect to the wall of the box, both adjacent the upper edge of the flange and adjacent the lower edge thereof.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a box constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a perspective showing the tongue; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the keeper which cooperates with the tongue.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a box comprising a body 2 having an up standing side wall 3.
At 4 there is shown a lid including a depending flange 5 overlapping the outer face of the side wall 3 of the body 2 of the box.
The lid and the body preferably but not necessarily are made of cardboard.
A metal keeper 6 is applied into the outer face of the side wall 3 and is terminally provided with bendable, pointed prongs 7 extended as shown at 8 through the side wall 3 and clenched as shown at 9 to the inner face of the side wall. The keeper 6 includes an offset socket 10, and a seat 11 bearing on the outer face of the side wall 3, between the prongs 7 and the socket 10.
The numeral 12 designates a flexible tongue extended downwardly through the socket 10 and having its lower end 14 bent upwardly across the outer face of the socket 10, as indicated in dotted line at 15 in Fig. 2. The tongue 12 passes upwardly, as shown at 16, between the flange 5 and the side wall 3. The upper end of the tongue 12 is provided with an L-shaped extension 17, one arm 18 of which passes outwardly through the flange 5, the other arm 19 of which extends upwardly along the outer face of the flange, the last specified arm 19 being terminally provided with a bendable, pointed prong 20, passing inwardly, as shown at 21, through the flange 5, and clenched as shown at 22 upon the inner face of the flange 5, to hold the tongue 12 in place. It is to be observed that the clenched part 22 of the prong 20 cooperates with the part 16 of the tongue to space the flange 5 of the lid from the side wall 3. The flange 5, therefore, is not likely to be bulged inwardly and distorted adjacent its upper edge, since the part 22 of the tongue is interposed between the flange 5 and the side wall 3 adjacent the upper edge of the side wall.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A box comprising a body including a side wall; a lid including a flange overlapping the outer face of the side wall; a socket secured to the outer face of the side wall; and a flexible tongue extended downwardly through the socket and having its lower end bent upwardly across the outer face of the socket, the tongue passing upwardly between the flange and the side wall, the upper end of the tongue being provided with an L- shaped extension, one arm of which passes through the flange, the other arm of which extends upwardly along the outer face of the flange, the last specified arm of the extension being terminally provided with a bendable prong passing inwardly through In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the flange and clenched upon the inner face my own, I have hereto affixed my signature of the flange to hold the tongue in place, in the presence of two Witnesses. and to cooperate With that part of the STEPHEN E. MILLER.
5 tongue which lies between the flange and Witnesses:
