THRAD-GUIDING MECIEIANISM' To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, ViLLniM H. GOLD- sMiri-i, Jr., of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thread-Guiding Mechanisms, of which the following is a full,
' clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The present invention -relates to an im-' derstood by lreference to the drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan showing the applica tion of the mechanism-to the frame of a spinning machine, that portion of the frame only being'shown which isvnecessary to' a proper understanding of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view mainly in side elevation but partly in section of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section onthe line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan of the under side of a portion of the mechanism to which special reference will hereinafter'l be made. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 3. Fig. (i is a front elevation of a portion of the mechanism to which special reference will hereinafter be made. Fig. 7 isa plan of a slightly, modified structure; and Fig.` 8 shows mainly a side elevation thereof.

The supporting bar 4l is provided at its end with a stop 9 which defines the limits within which the .Xbar may turn and whichlimits correspondwith the turned positions of the holders and guide wires as above referred to. The stop 9 consists of a hub 10 secured to the end of the bar and from which project arms 11 and 12, respectively.
-Of these arms the arm 11 is adapted to engage the front side or face of the roller beam when the bai' has been turned forward, so that the holders and guide wires will occupy their proper operative or substantially horizontal positions, while the arm 12 is adapted to engage the top side of the roller beam when the bar has been turned backward. elevating the holders and guide wires into a preliminary to doiiing as aforesaid. It will be furtherobserved that either the arm 11 or the arm 12y formsa crank by which .the bar can be turned, which function is availed of by providing the arm 12 with a handle 13 (see Fig'. 2).

The holder 2 comprises in part a top plate 1S having dependent side flanges 1S). The plate 1S has a rear extension or tail portion i2() which is extended to lie beneath the leaf and has bearing against the under side thereof'. The flanges 19 of the plate and extensionQO thereof extend by the inner sides to the flanges 16' of the leaf, fitting snugly between these flanges. which accordingly operate to hold the entire holder in place .against lateral displacement (see Fig. 4).
In order that each holder may be turned individually from a substantially horizontal operative position to an upright or vertical position in its relation to the bar l. a hinged connection is made between the holder and leaf b v a hinge-pin Q0 which extends beneath the top plate 18 through the flanges 19 thereof and also through the projecting i 'ends 17 of the flanges of the leaf. hinge-pin 22 lies forward of the front edge of the leaf and bar 4, the rear extension 20 of the plate 1S extending backward from the point of the hinged connection to lie beneath. the leaf and bear against the samev as aforesaid (see Figs. 3 and 4). This enables the holder to be turned from a sub-- stantially horizontal operative position to an upright or vertical position, the end extension or tail portion 20 then turning downward awa-y from the leaf against whlch it is bearing, while the main body of the holder and guide wires carried by it turns upward. In this connection it will be understood that the holder is maintained in its normally operative or substantially horizontal position by the bearing of the tail portion 20 pf liev holder against the under side of the ea I The hinge-pin is concealed on the under side of the-holder by a bottom plate Q5 which fits within the flanges 19 of the top plate and extends back rover the hinge-pin and has the flange 26 thereof extended up wardly around the pin from the rear end of' the. plate (see Fig. 3). The bottom plate is held in place by the flanges 0f the top plate, the bottom edges Q7 of these flanges being bent inwardly to embrace the bottom plate (see Fig. 5).
The guide wire 3 is adjustably secured to the holderby a bolt and nut in a manner commonly employed. The rear end of the guide wire is turned to form an elongated loop 30 which is contained within the chamber of the holder between its top plate 18 and the bottom plate Q5. A bolt 31 extends through the top plate, loop 30 and bottom plate. On the end of this bolt is a nul. 2Q which, when tightened to bear against. the bottom plate, clamps the' looped end of the guide wire between the respective plates and thereby securely fixes the wir io the holder, permitting,. however, of th. adjustment thereof upon releasing the nut (see F l and 4). In order that the snanlt ol' the guide wire may be moved laterally on the holder during the :nliustnnrut of the wire. the top plate. has no dependent flange at the front edge. thereof, `which aceordingliv leaves a relatively wide opening in the front of' the holder and through which opening the guido wire extends (see Fig. (l). Seated within the chamber of the holder is a plate 3i of' generally segmental fornil through which the bolt passes. The guidi` wire passes through this guard, an opening being formed in the guard of just suflicicnt size to admit of thepaa e of the wire. The guard is rounded to con orm to the interior of the semi-circular front of the holder and is of sufficient extent to cover the opening' therein at all times whatever the lateraily-adjusted position of the guide. wire may be. ln other words, as the guide wire is moved laterally within the opening left in the holder the guard will move with it around the bolt 31 as a center with the effect that a closure of the opening will be obtained at all times whatever the laterally-adjusted position ot the guide wire may be (sce Fig. (i).
In Figs. 7 and 8 there is shown a .slightly modified construction especially with relation to the manner in which the, holder is attached to and otherwise cooperates with the attaching leaf which .secures the holder to the holder bar. ln this modified construe-tion the leaf 1 5 has no dependent flanges, nor is the top plate of the holder ex tended beneath the leaf. instead, a top plate 1S Ais provided which is hinged directly to the front edge of' the leaf by a hinge-pin 22% 'lhetop plate is provided with dependent side flanges 19 the bottom edges of which are turned at Q7 to embrace a bottom plate 25" the same as before. The bottom plateQ-i is'. provided with upwardlyextending sideflanges 37 and the plate together with its fLanges is extended backward by extensions 20 beyond the hinged connection to bear against the under side of the leaf 15 formaintaining the holder and glande wire in their operative substantially horizontal position. This modified construction operates siibstantially the steine as-tha'tfirst described andji'n other respects than those aboveindicatedwis substantially the same.
