IMPROVEMENT IN PREVENTING MILDEW IN CANVAS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 121,038, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE BATHY, of Smiths Creek, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Compound for Preventing Mildew in Canvas, &c.; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof:
This invention relates to a compound with which to treat canvas, duck, and similar fabrics, for the prevention of mildew and dry-rot, and at the same time to render the fabrics non-inflammable; the said compound is a saturated solution of alum in the kerosene oil of commerce.
To any quantity of kerosene oil add as much alum as will dissolve therein, and apply this compound to the manufactured fabric, or to the material before weaving.
This oil effectually prevents mildew or dry-rot in the fabrics treated with it, but leaves them, if applied alone, very liable to destruction, either I by spontaneous combustion or in case a spark of Witnesses:
