police/tion filed Fcirnaiy $3, i916. Serial lilo. if v Z "o uit /w/wm t may conce/rn Be it known that l, @iconen llN'ru a citizen of the United States, residing Jersey City, in the county of llutisoii The present invention relates to imprevements in receptacles and has relation more particularly to a closure therefor.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a closure so constructed as to permit of the cover beingr usefl on recente cles of various sizes.
A still further object of tbe'invention is the provision of a cover oiE tbe above stateel character embodying a plurality of loosely assembled lapped segmental sections, and means passing through the sections for permitting the sections to be expanded or contracted whereby the cover will be adaptable for receptacles of various sizes.
With the above anel other objects in View., the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination ci parte which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying; drawing and pointed out in the appencle claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective lview showing tlie cover in applied positiong-Fig. 2 is a'bottoxn ple-u view of the receptacle to Wliioli the ooi/ei' is attaclietl: and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken tlnfougii the receptacle and cover.
Referring mole particulwly to the clravv ing, 5 denotes a reeepteele which is pr ably constructed of sheet metal anni the like material having,f a bocly portion l5 lieving adjacent the lower edge thereof an inwarcllyextending concentric tlange 7. @con erating with the flange of the receptacle is a spring actuated bottoni 8 constitotingl separable leaves 9 and 'i0 pivotaily connected with the receptacle and to one anM other by means of a pintle llt The bocly portion 6^ oit the receptacle at points below its inwardly extending' iangge is further provided with a conceiitric stampe@ e i l2 for accommodating a pair ot dia cally opposite flat spr" and lei-i suoli springs being permanently s eurecl to the terior face of the leaves by means ci tas toners 15. in order that the contents oi tlie receptacle may be conveniently liscliargefl therefrom li provide an. unproven i if dumping the bottom El wliieli comprises an actuating roti 16 journaled in the Walls of tlie receptacle 5 a point below :incl in spaced parallel relation with. the pintlepins il and provided ivitli lateral extensions l?. 'lbe operating roel 1.6 "is operatively con- Y neet-ed with the flat' springs 13 through the medium of links 18 connected at one end to the springs anal connected' at the opposite ends with tl'ie lateral extensions 17 and the actuating rofl 16 is rocked through the ineclium of an operating liaminei? i9 which extends upwardly and in spaced relation with -tlie exterior surface of n the body portion 6 ol' tbe `receptacle. i
it will, oit course, be understood that the receptacle as shown is merely illustrativeA inasmuch as the essential features of my' invention embody an improved, closure 2O so constructed as to permit o1 the saine beingl employed on receptacles of various cliameters. The closure 20 is preferably constructed of sheet metal material. and einbodies a main disk 2l. having a centrally located opening 22, tbe Walls 23 of suoli openH ing being fern ed with a concentrically ar ranged slot 24 for tletacliably connecting with the walls 23 an auxiliary dieithrough. the medium of a fastener 26, the fastener 2,6 extending through theslot 2Liancl permanently retaining the auxiliary disk 25 above and in spaced relation with the main Clisli 2l for a purpose Wliieli will liereinz'iiter be more fully explaineclU The auxiliary disk Q5 is provided with a plua rality' of relativelyy spacecl radially extending slots 2'? tor slitlably receiving Alie studs 28 of anexpansible and eontractible rin) 29. The rim 29 comprises a series ot segmental sections 307 eacli sectionunclerlapping the adjacent section on one side and overlapping its adiacent section on tbe other siecle which will readily permit of tlie adjustment of the sections to adapt tlie same :tor receptacles of various diameters and furthermore assures a tight connection of tno closure wltl'i suoli receptacle. The studs 2e? which project through the slots il? are tln'eafleclly eonnecteel inthe apertures 3l of eacli oi tliesegmental sections BO at points adjacent one inner thereof? While the opposite ond of eacb, oi the segmental sections 30 is bent in Warclly as at to provicle a. flange 83 of substantially lil-shaped configuration in'cross ectionaiuti afiapteel to ride over the langecl Ell oi tlie receptacle 5 The outermost ies limb 35 of the U-shaped 'flange 33 is formed with a depending loop 36 and passing through the loops 36 is an adjusting ring 37 which through the medium of the adjustment of such ring causes movement of the studs 28 in the slots 27 and expands or'contracts the segmental sections as the occasion may so demand. rlhe cover 2O is fastened to the receptacle` 5 through the medium of adjusting screws 8S. The vopening 22 of the main disk 2l is closed by means ot a spring actuated lid 39 and is hinged to the Wall 23 of said opening. It is obvious from the drawing that in assembling the various sections constituting the adjustable cover Q0 each of the segmental sections is inserted within ythespacc 40 foianedby the main and Y auxiliary disks 2l and respectively and it is to be further stated that any number oi suchsections may be employed as is found necessary in the practical use of the device.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with. the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, scribed the principles of operation of the device together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are'within the scope of the claims appended thereto.
I claim:
l. A closure `for receptacles providing a main disk having a central'opening, the walls forming the opening being slotted, an
auxiliary disk, means carried by said aux-- iliary disk and extending through the said slots for connecting the auxiliary disk in spaced relation with the 'former mentioned disk, and a plurality of loosely assembled lapped segmental sections interposed besections being and while I have dey f' 1,210,284c
tween the main and auxiliary disks and capable of expansion and contraction.
2. In combination with a receptacle having a flanged top, o'l a closure'therefor, said closure embodying a plurality of loosely assembled lapped segmental sections, said formed at their outer ends with a flange adapted to receive the flange of the receptacle, loops carried by said segmental sections, and means extending through said loops for permitting of the expansion or contraction of the segmental sections.
3. A closure for receptacles embodying a main disk, an auxiliary disk arranged above and in spaced relation with the main disk and detachably connected thereto and provided with a concentric series of radial slots, a plurality of segmental sections interposed between the main and auxiliary disks, and means extending through the slot of the auxiliary disk and having connection with each of the segmental sections for. loosely connecting the sections between said disks.
4. A closure for receptacles embodying a main disk, an auxiliary disk arranged above and in spaced relation vwith the main disk and detachably connected thereto and provided with a concentric series of radial slots, a plurality of segmental sections interposed between the main and auxiliary disks, means extending through the slot of the auxiliary disk and vhaving connection with each of the segmental sections for loosely connecting the sections between said disks, and means having connection with the segmental disks for causing the expansion and contraction thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
