Be it known that I, JOHN JACOBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alternating Inductor-Dynamos,which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of an alsaid improvements. This invention relates to improvements in electric machinesy of the type commonly known as alternating inductor-dynamos, the same embodying features of construction whereby in the operation thereof alternating electric currents are induced.
The objects of this'invention are to provide an alternating inductor-dynamo which shall be simple and inexpensive as regards construction, so constructed as to insure thorough ventilation of the machine as a whole in operation, so constructed as vto minimize the hum or noise commonly if not always attending prior analogous machines in operation, which shall particularly provide for ready access to the interior parts and the removal and replacement of such parts, which y which shall possess certain well-defined advantages over prior analogous constructions.

The casing members are preferably produced by the process of casting, and'when so produced the permanent casing member and the base Z/"may be conveniently formed integral. 2/ is in place for service on member 2, they form Vthe complete casing for the dynamo and are substantially circular in vertical section at right angles to the axis of the machine as a whole. The casing members are fastened together in any well-known and approved manner, though to this end I have shown vthe same as provided with registering lugs 3 3 to permit the use of bolts and'nuts for such fastening purpose. The casing member 2 is provided with anv interiorsemicircular flange 3", located nearer one of the end edges of said memberk than the other or away from the central point between said edges, and the casing member 2' is provided with a corresponding flange 4, adapted to register at its ends with the ends of the flange 3" and form an interior continuous circular flange for the dynamocasing when the parts 2 2 are fastened topreferably formed integral with the respective casing members, as in the process of casting, and the Apurpose thereof will be explained hereinafter.
Within the dynamo-casing as a Whole I arrange segmental secondary polar rings, each comprising a plurality of laminated metallic elements fastened together in any convenient manner, as by means ofl bolts and nuts, such as illustrated in the drawings, eachfprovided with equidistant inwardly-extending radial projections f1", having each a distant end surface comprising curved lines as elements thereof, the `said rings being in excess of two in number and being each formed of lVhen member The flanges 3" and dare ICO segments 5 5', arranged, respectively, in the casing members 2 2', so that the ends of one segment will register with the ends of its co= operating segment, and thus form one of said secondary polar rings.
The medial secondary polar ring is inserted in the dynamo-casing so that it seats against the integrant circular flange formed by the semicircular fianges 3" et and is there held in any convenient and approved manner, as by means of bolts and nuts, such as shown in the drawings, and the object of locating the circular flange aforenamed away from the central point between the end edges of the dynamo-casing is to permit the medial secondary polar ring to occupy a position when thus adjusted for service midway between the end edges of said casing. glhereafter there is inserted within the casing a plurality of fieldcoil bobbins 5", detachably fastened to the dynamo-casing, as by means of the set-screws 6,which extend through the casing at suitable points andinteriorlyengage and hold said bobbins firmly to the casing, interiorly'thereof. Other forms of' fasteners may be employed for this purpose; but as the bobbins are not segmental in form such fasteners should be of a character to permit disengagement of the bobbins from the easing from the outside of the latter.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the field-bobbins are located one at each side of the medial secondary polar ring, and further secondary polar rings are located one at the outer side of each bobbin.
At one end of the dynamo-casing there is secured, as by means of fasteners 6', a segmental keeper 6", along the inner side of whichthere is located one of the outer secondary polar rings, and at the rear or inner side of the latter there is arranged a flat ring 7, these parts being tied firmly together by means of bolts and nuts 13', as shown, the said bolts projecting outwardly through suitable registering openings formed therein. The opposite outer secondary polar ring is correspondingly held in position, as through the bolts and nuts 13 ,dat ring 7', and keeper 7", the latter fastened to the end of the dynamo-casing, as by means of the fasteners 8.
The respective bobbins 5" are provided each with a field-coil 9; but as these bobbins are not formed in segments the field-coils may conform to established usage in the construction of electric machines. The terminals of the field-coils lead outward through the dynamo-casing, substantially as shown in the drawings, for connection in circuit with a direct-current generator, (not shown,) which generator may be of any approved construction.
9 represents the operating-shaft, on which is firmly mounted the drum 9", the latter being provided with an integrant annular flange 10. The shaft 9' is journaled to rotate in the upright bearing 10 10", fastened to the base 2" or formed integral therewith, if preferred. The iiange 10 is located away from the central point of the drum 9", between the req spective ends thereof, and registers with the flanges 3 4 as regards plane of location.
There are mounted on the drum 9 a plurality of primary polar rings 11, each composed of laminated sheet metal and having at intervals therealong radial outwardly-extending projections 11. The medial primary polar projection is located alongside the flange 10 on the drum 9", and at the Aopposite side thereof, loosely on the drum 9", is a flat ring 11", the said iiange, polar ring, 4and fiat ring being provided with suitable registering openings, permitting the use ot' bolts and nuts 13', as shown, for fastening the polar ring to the Hange 10. The remaining primary polar rings are correspondingly. constructed and are held `in position for service through the medium of a keeper, as 12 12', firmly connected with the drum 9" at its end, as by means of the fasteners 6"' 8', and having a flat ring 14 14: loosely girdling the drum 9" at its inner side, the said fiat ring, polar ring, and keeper having suitable registering openings to permit the use of bolts and nuts, as

The primary polar projections are without coils or windings, rotate with the drum 9" each in a plane common with one of the secondary polar projections, and serve as inductors to induce a secondary current in the secondary coils 8.
Motion and power are imparted to the shaft 9' through the medium of the pulley 15', fast on said shaf t, and the latter carries a further pulley 15", designed for belt connection with a direct-current electric generator, as in common practice.
The primary polar projections are each provided with an outer end surface comprising curved lines'as elements, and by giving substantially this shape to the respective primary IOO IIO
and secondary projections I aim to overcome the noise or hum which commonly, if not invariably, attends analogous electric machines of the prior art, projections shaped substantially as herein shown tending to facilitate freedom of action on the part of the magnetic columns generated in the operation of the machine.
The flat rings 7 7 have no fixed engagement with the dynamo-casing and are normally free to move therein.
The projections of each of the segments of the respective secondary polar rings carry interconnected insulated coils 8', and the adjacent terminals of the coils of eachl pair of cooperating segments lead outwardly through suitable openings formed in the dynamo-casing, at one side thereof, and may be readily arranged for connectionautomatically when the casing members are adjusted for service or may be connected through the medium of a switch, as 8", of any approved form and adapted for hand operation, and the opposite terminals thereof lead outwardly through vtilation of the various parts of the machine and keep them cool in operation.
The coils of the secondary polar projections are preferably wound so that the medial secondary projections will be of negative polarity, while the outer secondary projections will be of positive polarity, and these remarks apply also to the primary polar projections.
In operation the drum 9" and the primary polar projections rotate with the shaft 9';
while the field-*coil bobbins and the respective secondary polar projections remain stationary, and in this connection it will be observed that the central opening in each of the.
bobhins is of somewhat greater diameter than the drum 9.".
When constructed as herein described, access to the interior parts of the machine may be had by removing the upper casing member from the lower, to which end such upper casing member is provided with a stem 1G', threaded to screw into a suitablyLthreaded opening formed in said member and having an eye 16 at its upper extremity, or access to the interior parts of the machine may be had by removing the various keepers located at the respective ends of the dynamo-casing.
It will be observed that my improved dynamo is well adapted for thev purpose for which it is designed, that it presents novel featuresof construction permitting ready assembling of the parts thereof or removal of such parts from the machine, and that the same may be modified to some extent without material departure from the spirit and principle of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 1. An alternating inductor-dynamo comprising an operating-shaft; a drum fixed on said shaft and having an integrant exterior flange out of center lengthwise of the drum; and a laminated primary polar ring on said drum, the said ring being provided with polar projections and being fastened to said integrant flange.
2. An alternating inductor-dynamo comprising an operating-shaft; a drum fixed on said shaft and having an integrant iiange out of center lengthwise of the drum; a flat ring on and movable along the drum; a primary polar ring on said drum intermediate of said flange and said iiat ring; and bolts extending through said iiange,l polar ring and fiat ring and provided with nuts whereby the said parts may be firmly locked together for service.
3.' An alternating inductor-dynamo comprising a casing formed in segments, each of said segments being formed withan interior integrant tiange, the Iiange of one casingseg ment registering with the flange of the other segment to form a continuous integrant iange within the dynamo-casing when the segments ofthe latter are fastened together for service; a secondary, segmental polar ring within the dynamo-casing alongside of said iange and fastened thereto by means of bolts and nuts; and means for fastening the casing-segments together.
4. An alternating inductor dynamo comprising a casing formed in segments and provided with an interior segmental, integrant iiange out of center lengthwise of the casing; a segmental fiat ring loosely within the casing; a segmental, secondary polar ring within the casing intermediate of said fiat ring and said flange; and bolts'extending through said flange, polar ring and tiat ring, and pro vided with nuts whereby the flange, polar ring and flat ring aforenamed may be fastened together for service.
5. An alternating inductor-dynamo comprising a segmental casing; a segmental, secondary polar ring within and at one end of said casing; a segmental keeper secured t0 the end of the casing; and bolts extending through said keeper and said polar ring and provided with nuts whereby said ringis fastened t-o said keeper.

An alternating inductor-dynamo com-A prising an operating-shaft; adrum mounted on said shaft; a primary polar ring on said drum at one end thereof; a keeper secured to the end of said drum; and bolts extending through said polar ring and said keeper and provided with nuts whereby said polar ring may be fastened to said keeper.
7. An alternating inductor-dynamo comprising a segmental casing provided with ventilating;openings; an operating-shaft; a drum mounted on said shaft and provided with Ventilating-openings; field-coil bobbins within said casing andprovided with ventilating-openings; means whereby said bobbins may be locked against movement, from the outer side of the casing; secondary polar proj ections within the casing; and primary polar projections carried by said drum.
8. An alternating inductor-dynamo comprising a segmental casing; segmental secondary polar rings having projections car= rying interconnected secondary coils; and means for connecting the terminals of the coils of the respective polar segments, at one side of the casing.

An alternating inductordynamo comprising a segmental casing provided with an interior, integrant ian ge out of center length wise of the casing; three segmental polar' rings within they casing, the medial one being bolted to said flange and the remaining ones being located one at each end of said casing, interiorly thereof; segmental keepers secured one at each end of said casing; and
