To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. WELLEs, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Armatures for Dynamos and Motors, of which the following is a full description.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, of which Figure 1 is a vertical side view of the arma. ture complete having a section broken away- Fig. 2 is a View of this section; Fig. 3, a pcripheral view of the armature, part of it containing the winding and the other part showing the place upon which the coils are wound.
The body of the armature consists of a series of thin plates A, insulated from each other and bolted together in segments, which when assembled and brought together end for end form the body of the armature-ring. The plates constitutingthese segments are of equal length; but when brought together they are alternately arranged so that one plate projects from the end and the next recedes, so that an adjoining segment corresponding in form will fit into the openings thus left and unite therewith to make a compact ring.
The plate a surrounds the armature on one side and the plate a on the other side and are secured by insulated bolts which pass through the series of thin plates A, and around them all is placed the coilD of the armature. These plates at a are also formed in segments and rabbeted at their ends to overlap and make a continuous surface when in place.
In constructing this armature the thin plates a a are first put together, as above described, in as many segments of a circle as maybe desired. The ring B is also provided with bolt-holes Z) to receive the bolts which secure the radial arms of a spider c. This spider has an opening for passing over the shaft. It is split and is secured to said shaft by means of the bolt b As thus constructed, it will be seen that the armature is composed of sections upon which the winding is. placed and the sections then fitted to their places and the retaining-plates B and B secured to the side, leaving the complete armature held and supported by the spider G and projecting from the plate to cooperate with the pole-pieces of a suitablyconstructed magnet.
What I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A ring-armature for a dynamo or motor built up in segmental sections and provided with coils so placed thereon that spaces are left on the outer periphery thereof, in combination with a circular retaining-ring secured at one side of said armature and provided with fingers arranged to enter said spaces, whereby the segmental sections are held and secured together.
2. A ring-armature for a dynamo or motor, built up in segmental sections, and provided with coils so placed thereon that spaces are left on the outer periphery thereof, in combination with a circular retaining-ring secured at one side of said armature and provided with fingers arranged to enter said spaces, whereby the segmental sections are held and secured, and a spider provided with radial arms secured to said retaining-ring.
3.
