LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1916.
Application led July 5, 1916. Serial No. 107,666.
To all 'wwm it may concern Be it known that we, MASAICHI AOYAMA and JUICHI HroAsI-IINO, citizens of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp -Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp burners and especially with reference to improvements in means to automatically extinguish a lamp when the same is moved from an upright position, the object of the invention being to provide impro-ved extinguishing devices of thischaracter which are cheap and simple in construction and which may be readilyy installed in an ordinary lamp burner.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a lamp burner provided with extinguishers constructed and arranged in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
In the lamp burner here shown, the kcap is indicated at 1, the gallery at 2, the base at 3, and the wick tube at 4. In accordance with our invention, we provide a pair of extinguishing hoods 5, 6, which are arranged at opposite sides of the wick tube, are adapted to close thereover to extinguish the iame, and are respectively pivotally mounted in the burner as at 7, 8. Vires are employed as pivots for the extinguishing hoods which are passed through openings in the ends of the hoods and have their ends bent downwardly and secured on the perforated portion 9 of the burner. Normally the hoods are tilted outwardlyy and bear at their lower outer sides on the perforated portion of the burner. When the lamp is inclined in either direction at right angles-to the pivot axes 7, 8, of the hoods, one of the hoods will be overbalanced and will move to closed and extinguishing position as indicated in dotted lines as in Fig. 1 and as will be understood.
To cause the hood 6 to move to extinguishing position in the event that the lamp should be inclined in either Vdirection parallel with the pivotal axes 7, 8, we provide a rocker k10 which is made of wire, is mounted at the ends 1l, in bearings l2 secured on the perforated portion 9 of the burner and has a depending arm 18 provided with a weight ltand also has a laterally extending arm 15 which engages under one end of the extinguishing hood 6 at a point spaced a suitable distance fromL the pivot wire 8. While the lamp is in an upright position, the weight 14 holds the arm 15 in lowered position, but should the lamp be inclined in one direction, parallel with the pivotal axes 7, 8, the weight will cause the rocker to turn and also cause the arm thereof to move upwardly and thereby close the extinguishing hood 6. A similar rocker 16 is provided for the extinguishing hood 5, its arm ex-` tends in the opposite direction from the arm 15 and hence, when the lamp is inclined in the reverse direction, the weighted rocker 16 will close ythe extinguishing hood 5, as will be understood.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
In combination with a lamp burner, having a perforated base portion, andalso having a pivotally mounted extinguishing hood, a rocker element comprising an axle portion, a depending weighted arm, and a substantially horizontal operating arm, and bearings on said perforatedportion of the burner and in which the axle portion of said rocker is mounted, the weighted arm of the rocker extending downwardly from said perforated portion, the arm of said rocker slidably engaging under the hood and the axle portion of said rocker being arranged at right angles to the pivot axis of the hood.
